Auto-response to non-friends: "I'm sorry. The number you have dialed is busy. Please hang up and try again later."

Haven't been pestered by a single loser or their cousin, moron, since leaving that on.

Mine is "I'm sorry but the number you have dialed is out of order. If I find order in my life I'll get back to you."

It's a lot like the word "fair" - which is an oxymoron in and of itself; it's a 'null' word without meaning because what is "fair" to me may not be "fair" to you. I said that to say this: (LOL) - This thread applies to all of us equally, including the OP himself. Because *context* is king. :)

Well, except for @LittleMe Jewell . *Snorts* ?

I've been around a few decades so you aren't telling me anything I haven't known for a long time.

See my reply to Love. :)

We are all guilty of something! So, there!

Yes, we are, you little tail swiperer you. :x

Which was the whole point. The problem I had with the OP was the fact that he was "pointing fingers" without taking time to examine his own feelings and reactions with an understanding of why he feels that way instead of sweeping them under the rug.

You just made the OP's point. :)

Nah. Just pointing out that he was being the way he was accusing others of being.

You know, the one who screams loudest is most guilty and for every finger he points at others, there are three pointing back at him.

    Yeah, that. ;)

Oh, but is there a way to make your own avatar invisible? I'll have to learn a quicker way to change clothes.

Making your av invisible won't do you any good. You can still be seen on the minimap and your name tag will still show so they will know you are there. Have the clothing in a folder and right click the folder, then select Replace current outfit. No nudity required.

I found out that some have some people, but they banned me for no reason. I'm not going back to Second Life anymore because I visited here to explore. This keeps happening whenever I get curious and only want to look around.

If it is an RP sim and you are not dressed appropriately for the theme, you usually will get banned if you refuse to dress appropriately. Most RP sims will have freebies you can wear at the landing point, so no excuses.

    Hi there,

    I am not sure why but lately I've noticed two basic personalities among SL avatars, I don't know if SL makes you like that, or everybody tries to get in the same boat and act that way because it is a trendy thing. I've been in SL for around some time and back in the days I noticed people were more genuine, but nowadays, besides of 'pailed-looking-white-haired' avatars everywhere, there's also a trend in the way people react;

    1. Man try to look alphas, dominant, they even try to sound like a greek god movie star when on voice. It's sad.

    2. Women act like cold, very sexualized mean [ladies] you can't even afford to look at them because of so hot they are.

Now I would accept these as individual personality trait, but not when 90% of SL acts this way. It's so fake and disgusting, people pretending to be something they are not only to be tagged as cool, popular, or because they feel the need to fit in. This Virtual World definetely lost what made people genuine here.

Most populated places now are only people described above, avatars with  static poses watching each other for hours without even engaging in any kind of interaction, it's so sad.

Only places I still find some genuine people are in newbie landing areas, I suppose new joiners discovering this world still got the same "innocence" and admiration to discover new things and be what they really can't in RL. But then again, eventually these guys will also turn into SL snobbism.

    What happened?

    Regards.

Yes, there are a lot of people who log into SL for pixel sexxors. There are many who don't.

I'm one of the ones that doesn't. I freely admit I have been an SL virgin for 13 years. That will never change.

No, I'm not interested in getting to know anyone that posts such snotty snobbery as you have.

    Oh.

I was just about to declare my complete ignorance in front of everybody and ask you flat out ?. Thanks for the picture; I'd never have gotten it just from the textual clues.

ETA: I probably should have looked a little closer at your avatar, speaking of pictures. That mighta helped.

And here I thought I was the only one to ever call you Silly Dilly. :$

Think I'm conceited in public? You should see me in private, particularly when I'm in the back yard cursing at the wildlife because of the massive frustration the rest of you bring me each and every day. If it weren't for opossums there, I'd be unbearable here.

Excuse me, I see wild turkeys outside.

Those poor baby turkeys. You mean poopy head. :P

What?  None of them?  Not even one single great-great-great-great-great etc. grandparent during the last 2000 years?

Anyway, had the Roman Empire not existed, the history of America over 1000 years later, when it was colonised by Europeans, might have been very different.

Nope. Not a one. And yes, history would have been different. How different we'll never know.

It is -- or was -- a kind of clubhouse for forumites here. I assume it's still there. It might be quiet now, but do a search and drop by: there might be people from here there.

I'd drop in tonight and say hi, but it's late here and I have an early morning. If you're in tomorrow night, I might be on for a bit; give me a shout if you find yourself at loose ends!

Will do and thanks! Sleep well.

Well, that's a kind of home, right?

A lot of the places I called "home" have disappeared too, although surprisingly, the NGO/activist sim where I'm an administrator, is still there. I seem to have the run of the entire place, all to myself. I was also surprised by how many old friends are still apparently logging on.

The hardest part is finding a place, and a community, where you can feel comfortable. Let me know if you find one: I'm still looking!

(Have you thought of the checking out the Forum Cartel Hangout?)

lol I meant the skybox I used to rent. At the moment I'm on the FS Social Island for lack of a better place to go. Makes a good place to log in though.

Never heard of Forum Cartel Hangout.

I have no opinions on the Roman Empire except for one thing.  No matter how good or bad a historical situation or event was at the time, we are all beneficiaries of that history simply because we were born, which we might not have been if history had been different.

It wouldn't have had any impact on my ancestors. None of them ever lived on that side of the pond.

Oops. I meant to quote Scylla not Conifer. :$

  14. Reading this thread reminds me of the one time, years ago, someone managed to log into my account while I was logged in. This was during a rash of such goings on. I never clicked on links in chat or IMs. To this day I have never figured out how they got my fairly complicated password. Luckily, I was quick thinking enough to log in to one of my alts, (which all of my accounts were set to rez in at my home of the time) so they didn't have time to do anything more then change the password with me standing right in front of them in my home yelling at them to get off my account while I was on the phone with LL CS. I had my account back in less than 30 minutes.

Even so, if LL were to implement 2FA, I would still want the option to not use it. Make it an opt in kind of thing and I'll be fine with it. And yes, I do mean opt in, not opt out.

Just my 2 cents and personal preference.

ETA: I'm think Whirlz will remember when it happened. The idiot was spamming the FS support group (and others). Since I was on the support team at that time, they knew it likely wasn't me but had to kick me out of the group. And they were right to do so.

I love that you took the time to look for the song (although I can't imagine why you waded through my wall of text) but I wasn't looking for the Underground's version; that, as you saw, is readily available. What I wanted on youtube is the live version by Prague's favorites, The Plastic People of the Universe. That's the one I wanted to play here.

Because I've known you for a long time Silly Dilly and I thought I was helping. You don't remember me under this account because I didn't use this account name on the other forum. That was my original account name. Or at least the first half of it.

I'm sorry. I messed up again. I just got so excited with the mention of the Underground that I completely forgot about the Plastic People when searching. Velvet Underground was one of my favorite Haight-Ashbury bands along with Blue Cheer and some others. I just got lost in the nostalgia.

Ha! Allow me to demonstrate how to remove that 'non' by application of the Technique Levenque: simply using but a single oh-so-slightly unusual word from one post to spin up a complete maelstrom of nonsense. Behold.

The use of the word "Velvet" in a recent post about "Velvet Goldmine" spun me right out.

I own a record by 'The Velvet Underground'. These days they're quite well known but back when they were first around they were unheard of in regular rock n' roll on AM Radio, my only real source for new music. This was in my late teens or early twenties. Was no internet (Arpanet was either just about to start or had just started) and decades would pass before public access and the World Wide Web.

How I got the record way out in the boonies of North Central California I don't know. Saw it in a shop? One of the more outré girls I sometimes dated suggested it? Dunno. I do know my friends and I played it often. It isn't great rock and roll, but it was so DIFFERENT we didn't care. We played this song a lot. Yes we knew it was about a heroin addict. I don't think anyone I knew ever got into heroin, but still. Ugly. We still liked it.

    and then.....

I worked while I was in Silicon Valley for several years with a really good mechanical engineer. He was quite a character and we hit it off right from the start. When new builds were under way he'd spend half his time on my production floor assembling, going back and red-lining his drawings, and then trying again. He built personally about half the new stuff (and we were constantly doing new stuff: customs were us). I once told the CEO in a Production Meeting that I had my two best guys working on a project, then named my lead assembler and the engineer.

One time he and his wife went to Prague (city of her family's ancestors) on vacation. As it happened I had recently read a history of what (coincidentally enough) is called 'The Velvet Revolution'(so-called because it was virtually bloodless; there was no fighting), Czechoslovakia's first attempt to get out from behind the Iron Curtain. While reading this history I came across a passage explaining how one of the motivating factors behind the creation of the original anti-Warsaw Pact/Soviet resistance was official government suppression of a musical group. The group in question played decadent American rock n' roll, and were accused of being degenerates and possibly drug users.

I was stoked! American rock n' roll helped fuel the end of the Iron Curtain? Hot Damn! So when I learned of my friend's planned vacation I asked him to see if he could find anything at all by this group even though it was about thirty years after their heyday. When he came back he had a CD (not an old record as I'd expected). He said, somewhat resignedly, "They were having a Reunion Tour". He told me he'd listened to the CD and they were horrible, even though he was much too old to judge that ;-). He may have been right, though. The group was 'The Plastic People of the Universe'.

There were two recognizable American songs on the CD, sung in accented but mostly correct English. A long, long cover of "Light My Fire" contains the colorful malaprop "...no time to wallow in your mire...", always good for a chuckle.

The big hit, inevitably (and you knew it would be): covering The Velvet Underground and Nico. "I'm Waiting For My Man".

You have not lived until you hear them sing "Hey white boy, whachoo dooink uptown?"

Regrettably (or perhaps lucky for you) I could not find that song on YouTube. Short of becoming a YouTube channel and (violating copyright by) posting the contents of my CD, I don't know another way to deliver it to multiple anonymous users.

ps: Yes, we did eventually peel the skin off the banana. Tragically, my possibly valuable old album has been violated. Woe is me.

    Yes I know.... necro!

But I just could not let it go. Had you searched for Waiting for THE Man you would have found it.

This one was posted up in 2014. There are others but I didn't look at them. Just grabbed the first one I saw.

Oops. Did I just derail the derailed derail thread for derailed derail threads?O.o

Ok, then! You know what you're talking about then!

As a certified Luddite, I tend to naturally assume that "better" = "uses more computer resources." But I know that of course isn't necessarily true at all.

I'll give Firestorm a shot. Part of the "learning curve" over the last week has, actually, been regaining familiarity with the LL viewer, which is, as I say, clunky as hell. I always found FS waaaaay more intuitive (mind you, I still miss Phoenix!), and it has useful built-ins like being able to derender everyone except friends. So, yeah . . .

The LL viewer was always clunky. ^_^ Don't even get me started on V2. LOL
