  1. If I miss a group notice with an attachment, such as a gift, I don't see a way to detach it when I go into the group notices. I've double-clicked and r-click, but nothing happens. I've tried this with different groups, but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to get the attachment. Is this a V3 bug? Am I missing something obvious?
  2. Tiffy Vella wrote: The term "system clothes" means clothes that are created in appearance mode, using the sliders, and by applying square textures from inventory to the surface. System clothes differ from "proper" clothes in that their textures are not custom made. Proper clothes use alpha textures that define the shape, where the hems sit, and have custom folds and shading created in a graphics program. There is also system hair, system shoes, system eyelashes, system make-up. All are created in appearance mode, and all were once the only option SL avatars had. Gradually, we have learnt to hide these and replace them with better content. "Clothing layers" refers to the texture layers that we all use to wear clothes. Skin, tattoos and alphas are also layers. Each layer covers a specific area of the avatar and some can overlap. Each layer also fits into a system of priority, in that some will automatically cover others- eg, jackets will cover shirts, pants will cover socks. System clothes make use of these clothing layers, but proper textured clothes do too. The main difference is that in appearance mode, when the texture is applied to the new clothing part, the "proper clothes" will have a custom texture made specifically for that item, and won't rely upon the sliders to define the edges. You can't really use the term "clothing layers" to refer to system clothes, as all clothes use them, system or not. Hope this helps Thank you, Tiffy, for the very informative and clarifying reply. I'm back to calling them system clothes, then.
  3. Thanks, everyone. I think clothing layers sounds best. I saw "slider clothes" mentioned in a clothing tutorial I bought at Builder's Brewery. It might be an old term that's fallen out of use. It kinda makes some sense, though.
  4. I'm playing around with creating clothes. I've seen several different terms used for the clothes created from the Appearance controls. Is there a generally accepted term? So far, I've seen the terms "slider clothes", "system clothes" and "clothing layers". If I want to make sure everyone knows what I'm talking about, is one term more commonly used than others? Thanks
  5. Orca Flotta wrote: You don't make no sense. You have no time to research SL while you're trying to write your dissertation about SL??? All questions in your survey are missing the point, they don't really touch most of us. Also you'll get many very diverse answers, so many different opinions and ways people are handling things in SL you won't be any wiser after reviewing the results. Okay, I'll try to elaborate in the survey ... Sociology surveys often have little or nothing to do with the stated topic - in this case SL. For instance, glitter might be more interested in how people respond to the request to take a survey - e.g. this thread - and the survey is little more than a catylyst for discussion. Or glitter might not be interested in SL, at all, but more in what sort of people are part of online communities in general. It's not unusual for the intent or focus of a socioliogy project to be "misrepresented". For instance, if you want to test for prejudices among a particular demographic, such as do rich people hate poor people, you can't tell the test group what you're looking for and expect valid results. I see these surveys in the SL forums occasionally. If this is a legit sociology project, I would expect to see a school association and the name of a professor in charge, or, at the least, contact info at the university. Though I only had one sociology class in school, it did focus on data gathering. Everything we did had the school's contact info on it and we were always required to identify ourselves. Who is glitter? What's the school? How can we contact them? Who's the professor in charge of the project? As it is, this might be nothing more than someone gathering marketing information or worse, whatever worse is. Without more complete information, such as glitter's school association and his/her own identity, I wouldn't take this survey. I think people in SL are very generous with their time and would gladly take a legitimate academic survey. There's nothing to indicate this is one of them.
  6. I'm just starting to dabble with jewelry making, so this is probably a total noob question. I have a necklace and I want to add a pendant that's a word or someone's name. One solution, when I look at necklaces on the marketplace, seems to be to put letters as textures on prims like cubes. I wanted to use a script font, so having letters on individual prims wouldn't look right since the letters have to flow together. What I'd like to get is a pendant that's a 3D version of the word or person's name. How would you go about it? Is this the kind of thing I'd have to turn to blender to create? Thanks for any help.
  7. Sephy McCaw wrote: try disabling opengl vbo in prefs and see if that does any thing for you. That fixed it! Way to go, Sephy. I noticed the tooltip for opengl vbo says something about better performance on older computers. My computer is pretty new - 8 months old, running Win 7 with a ATI 5700 series (Had to check my computer info...), so perhaps they should update the tooltip to say something about newer computers getting bad performance, too. grrr
  8. Just an update... I tried turning off my antivirus and updating my graphics drivers, but still the same problem. At least FS works. Myra Wildmist sighs.
  9. Theresa Tennyson wrote: Slow chat windows and laggy movement are generally caused by connection or sim problems rather than viewer problems. The release version of Firestorm and Viewer 3.2.4 are very similar "under the hood" - all third party viewers are based to some extent on Linden Lab code. You might look at the settings in Firestorm versus the settings in Viewer 3 to see if there are differences there - they have different defaults. Theresa, I know for sure that it's not a sim or connection problem. I tested it by standing around in my home and switching viewers. I'm not sure why Firestorm would be different, but I get totally different performance results with it. FYI, I d/led and tried the lastest V3, last night, but it didn't help, in fact it seemed worse.
  10. I've installed V3 and Firestorm on my PC. Firestorm works fine - in fact, it's pretty nice. But this latest V3 is soooo laggy. It's so laggy my typing in chat lags. My avatar lags just standing around. Everything I do on V3 is very, very slow and all my actions seem to lag, even something as simple as pulling up a chat window. (Streaming music seems fine, btw.) Is there some sort of fix to this? I looked to make sure my graphics settings were okay and that sort of thing, but I'm not a pro at fixing these things.I did lower my graphics settings, but that didn't change anything, so I'm wondering if the issue isn't something else. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do?Outside of using FS all the time. ; ) Thanks for any help
  11. That's wonderful news. I'm keeping mine, though. :matte-motes-wink:
  12. Don't forget to just go shopping, too. Many stores offer great freebies, usually high-quality ones. Don't miss those. Some that come to mind: Apple May Designs has a whole room of freebies for new people, upstairs. Tokyo Girl has tons of freebies for group members and they're always giving away nice things on their MM boards. Grumble often has lots of gift certificates they give away, ranging in value from 25L to 1000L. The whole place is covered with MM boards and various giveaway enticements. It's a great place for new people to start and load up on stuff. Ducknipple has a room of free and low priced items. If you look around and are willing to store hop - Sounds like fun to me. - you could probably put together a whole wardrobe of quality freebies just from the stores in SL.
  13. Hi, Sarah. Just wanted to say I agree, since you got two negative replies. The viewer is so customizable it's messy. It needs better "docking" (Not sure if that's the right word.) options for item lists, such as your inventory, wardrobe, and LMs. I want specific anchor points for them and I want them to have tabs so I can easily move between them. Yes, like the pop-out menus. Sorry, I liked those. As it is now, they're in various places on your screen, depending on where you drag them. The floating local chat is a negative for me, too. I think many of the customization options are a move in the right direction. I do like that there's more screen space and I even like where the chat goes. For now, I'm back on the last version, but I'll try it, again, or maybe move to FS when that gets out of beta.
  14. Hi, Aylin. There still seems to be a problem with the consistency of the physics settings across the viewers, based on the various bug reports. Usually on V3, I see the problem with FS users. Phoenix users seem fine. But it looks like it cuts across all the viewers. People on Phoenix say they see exaggerated movement on AVs using V3, too. http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/PHOE-2979 The thread below has some things people can try to fix the issue: http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-1835?focusedCommentId=40548&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-40548 I guess until there's consistency with the physics across the viewers this might continue to be an issue.
  15. I tried to stick with it, but eventually went back to 3.1. I did like the smaller icons, customization, and the chats at top, too, actually. I did not like having important windows such as inventory, wardrobe, etc. without some sort of anchor points (Is that the right term?). I think i was in the minority, but I liked the pop-out menus. Many mmos have default layouts for their UI, plus they provide the option to customize your UI layout. Why not do something like that? Making the whole thing customizable just makes the screen a mess. One other thing... It doesn't seem too smart to have the option to select a new avatar as a default icon. How many poor newbies are going to hit that not realizing what it is and start weeping?
  16. @ Peggy. I hear what you're saying and, yes, there is a wiki. My point is maybe they should give a little more help to people who are paying them a bit more money. Making their SL experience easier upfront might make them stay in SL and increase that profit margin.
  17. I was at the Smithsonian Latino Music sim, today, looking at the Day of the Dead exhibit. It's very prominently displayed in your LL Viewer as a place to visit. It was a lot of fun, except... Griefers. The griefers ruined the event. They were walking around with signs celebrating Hitler (Hard to take the trolls seriously when they're soooo obvious.) and rezzing all sorts of junk in the sim. I'm sure a lot of people ARed them. What I found most troubling, though, was after talking to a person in the land group for the sim, it seems they were kinda newbs to SL and didn't understand what they have to do to set up their land, properly. Things like rezzing, scripting, and collision were all enabled. So I have some questions: What guidance does LL give to new sim owners? Do they give them a little FAQ about how to set up your sim and maybe one that specifically says, How to deal with griefers? This was a sim run and, I guess, paid for by the Smithsonian - the largest museum complex in the US - and sponsored by Disney (There's a little sign.). Did they get a little special handholding from LL? I mean, if the idea is to make a little money for SL and keep this fabulous virtual world going, wouldn't that be a good idea?
  18. Maybe they shouldn't look different in different viewers, but they do, at least for me. I've looked at my profile in FS and Phoenix and it looks fine, but the line breaks don't appear when I look at it in V3. Try it yourself and see if you have the same problem.
  19. Since the latest update to V3, the line breaks in my profile have disappeared. It looks fine in the editor, but all the line/paragraph breaks are gone when I view it. When I looked at other people's profiles in V3, they all seem to have this problem. Profiles look fine in FS and Phoenix, btw. Is this a new bug? Is there a way to fix this?
  20. And talk about a missed opportunity, if they don't have one! It's October! A great time for spooky and scary gifts. They could give everyone a Halloween costume. Or how 'bout a skeletion avatar? They could make a mesh one. And candy. We all want candy. And brooms to fly around on. Maybe a black cat as a pet. Oh! The possibilities are sooo exciting. Dont' disappoint us, LL. We want a bag of treats! And, yes, Keli, I sorta assumed it would be monthly, too.
  21. Thank you, Cinnamon. Perfect! Found it and learned something about my browser. Thanks much. (I'd give you a kudos, but I don't seem to have an option to do that.)
  22. I've started using different viewers, for a number of reasons. Firestorm has set itself up as the default viewer for slurls, though, and I'd like to change that back to V3, at least when I'm using V3. How do I do that? I'm on Vista, if that makes an difference. Actually, I'd like to have whichever viewer I'm currently using always be the default viewer for slurls, but unlike web browsers, neither FS nor V3 seem to inform you if their viewer is not currently the default viewer of choice. I'm going to continue to use both, so this would be a nice feature to add.
  23. Coby Foden wrote: If Linden Lab develops mesh so that it conforms also to morph targets instead of just the bones as it does now, then the mesh clothing will really become very usefull as it will deform with all the the appearance sliders. Then one clothing item will fit all avatar shapes. That will probably make all the difference in the world or the second world. Right now, mesh is a bit limited, but stil nice for some things. I like my mesh dresses. However, my mesh t-shirt looks awful, because it was designed for an av with ridiculous dimensions. The hoodie I tried looked weird, too. It was nice the way it moved, but was about 2 sizes too big.
  24. wiked, Firestorm, Cool, and V3 all do mesh, but not Phoenix. To export a blender file you need to save it as a Collada file, then upload it to SL. To upload, you have to take the mesh exam and have payment info on file. Some help on Blender clothing creationg; it might be useful: Robin Sojourner's video series is also a very good place to start.
