I have a mesh avatar I'm demoing. Yep, there's a great, big alpha layer that turns me into the invisible girl. Then I start putting on body parts - feet, head, torso, hands. This is very different from the former way of doing things. Attachments seem to work. My shoes look horrible. So texture clothing doesn't work, because the mesh avatar is essentially an attachment over the existing avatar?? So the mesh avatar doesn't really replace Linden's underlying avatar? Thanks, everyone, for the info. This really helps.

I'm making a list, sort of. What clothes won't work with mesh avatars? It seems a lot of shoes won't work, particularly if they shape your feet. So I guess this means the shoe shapers don't work with mesh, is that right? Attachments seem to work fine. My hair does. Also, textured clothing doesn't seem to work. Why is that? Newb questions, but I'm trying to sort through all of this. Maybe we can put together a list of what won't work and what will. Thanks for the help

Why is a head mesh and a body mesh needed for avatars?
Myra Wildmist replied to Myra Wildmist's topic in Mesh
ty, ceera. that explains it. -
I'm looking a little at mesh avatar design. One thing I don't completely understand: Why is a separate mesh needed for the head of realistic avatars? Thanks

Environ Settings: Why would I want to customize, if...?

Thanks, Charolotte. Yep, that's a perfect reason and a great example. -
Innula, I think that makes sense on a lot of levels. It would be less upkeep and hassle for LL, as you say, plus, it's not likely to chase away any members, because non-premium members could always go to group sandboxes. And it gives people an extra motivation to get premium membership, possibly bringing more cash to LL, which hopefully would be good for us all. It's a great idea.

This was really helpful for me. Those links really helped me understand this and, Ishtara, you helped clarify it. It would be nice to have a better def from LL. The wiki entry below doesn't really answer the same question, at least not as well as this thread, imo. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mesh/What_is_mesh%3F Thank you both.

Thank you, Coby. That wiki link is very helpful. I'm not sure imported mesh would work, though. You can already import sculpts, right?

Hi, I'm trying to wrap my mind around some of the terminology. Sorry for the simple questions. Is mesh a poor term? Some people have said everything in sl is essentially mesh, since under everything, it's all just polygons linked together in wireframe constructs. This seems to make sense to me, but is it the right way to look at it? If this is true, what's a better term? :D Is mesh the accepted term in the 3D world outside of SL? Should they be called lofted surfaces or NURBS? (I've been reading, so I'm wildly throwing some new terms around. Please correct if needed.) Will I need a math degree to create clothing? (Only half kidding.) Thanks

Okay, I think I understand it a little better. If I was to look at it architecturally, what we had before were the tools to create structures like the Parhenon or a Frank Lloyd Wright house: http://www.gowright.org/research/wright-robie-house.html (FLW, Robie house). While with "mesh", we'll have the ability to create Frank Gehry buildings Is that about right? (I only grabbed reusable images for this.)

Hi, I'm reading through a lot of the info about mesh online, now, trying to understand it. I understand the advantages, I think, and how it's created, but, I still have some basic questions? 1. What is mesh? There's a link here to the wiki, but it really doesn't answer the question: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mesh/What_is_mesh%3F 2. Also, how is mesh different from what we had before? I know this has probably been discussed to death, so thank you for your patience. All help is greatly appreciated.

Is there an obvious reason why you'd want a modifiable skin? I can think of lots of reasons why I'd want a shape that was modifiable, but I can't really think of anything obvious for a skin. Thanks

What are we going to call it? Chatbook, SLitter?

Slum. Love it! -
I love it, too, tako. It's a lot of fun. I think like some have said it has a few design issues, but I love the new features. It makes SL even more social and that's one of the appeals of SL for me.

I logged today and I noticed someone had written on my Feed. I knew this because I had a notification awaiting me in SL that alerted me to that. Ummm, won't this mean that a lot more people are going to end up with their messages capped? If so, is there a way to turn this off? ETA: I think the new Feed feature in the profiles is a lot of fun and many people will really enjoy them. Good idea, LL.
