  1. I wish they were off and remained off by default. In fact, given how 1999 they look, LL should remove the code. After all that is what windlight is for.

I mean come on... a square of particles over the region and no rain? One of the weather makers makes a good storm cloud with rain. Lightning is still kind of hmmm since there is no electrical arcing like in games from 2004. But it is better than nothing. Maybe ray casting or whatever that new bullet system is being worked on can be morphed into lightning. "Rain" leaves a lot to be desired as well. Oh look it is raining gray rectangles!

But the worst aspect is how the LL client refuses to keep those clouds shut off sometimes. And reverts the chat to showing those nasty icons that hog up screen real estate.

Give us meandering thunderstorms over the mainland lol. Like weather fronts. And in the winter they change to snow.

  2. I need to know if LL is totally done with product listing migration. I cannot waste any more time on editing listings that will be overwritten.

Please state in precise English that there is no more chance of any SLM listings being overwritten. Or that there is a chance so editing SLM listings is a waste of time.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Does this mean LL has no intentions of closing or filing bankruptcy until at least 2012? The rumors Tatero Nino are spreading are getting fairly depressing. Perhaps some sort of word from the board of directors explaining the state of LL and future plans is in order to silence the SL wake some have already commenced with such zeal and glee..

    Farewell, Avatars United

Same thing would happen if facebook bought SL. Zuckerberg would sneer with that insolent geek look he has and laugh at all the angst and lamentations from the SL community as he pulls the plug.

So enjoy things while you can because, on the internet, nothing is permanent or guaranteed to be there tomorrow.

Speaking of gimp...let's clear this up right quick.

There are people in the world who have the ability to walk. There are others in the world, for whatever reason, who can't walk. They're wheelchair bound. Question: does the rest of the world stop moving because of those who can't? No. It does not. To help accomodate those who can't walk, the ones who can have  been considerate enough to HELP those who can't, by installing ramps and lower furniture and wider toilets, and we've grown up enough to no longer giggle and stare or ask intrusive, uncomfortable questions. We've made things like prosthetic limbs with computerized motors to make it even easier.

Now there are two camps in the can't walk category.

Those "old school" cripples who refuse to upgrade to a motorized wheel chair, depending on someone to push them all over the place, and then there are the bionic ones who have the latest technology in mobility products, from the supersonic hover chair wth built in sensor control and emergency response, the prosthetic leg/s (that were printed in 3d, mind you), and robo arm. Those in this group are getting about, being outside, getting on with life as best they can.

Old school cripples refuse to upgrade and this technological stuff will ruin the quality of life, it will turn us all into cyborgs who will take over, old school cripples can't compete with the "elite" cripples with souped up chairs and robotic limbs, so what are they supposed to do? They shouldn't have to be "forced" into upgrading if they're completely happy with their circa 1930s era chair, it's just social darwinism at work.

It sounds like the real problem isn't about mesh, flexis or sculpties. It sounds like the real problem is these people have a seriously skewed sense of self worth, low self esteem, are so insecure they are personally threatened by anyone doing better than they do, and because of it, want to shut the whole thing down so nobody can enjoy life if they can't figure out how to.

So anyone you don't agree with is crippled/disabled. Got it. Really shows the intellect of these mesh pundits. Really demonstrates the issue with SL and LL catering to people like you.

Any company that suddenly lays off half it's workforce and closes all of it's overseas locations is not in the group defined as healthy. Sorry. And LL lives by the leave of the customers paying tier. And if the tier payers stop then it is game over. All those region hosts and that infrastructure is not free. Period. That is reality.

As for tools? Sculptris is pretty cool. It has issues though. I expect most 3d modeling tools will move into that organic voxel clay modeling style interface as an option. AC3D works well like that and is cheap.  The jump people have to make is simply getting used to their avatar not being present while they work in a 3d space. And no IMs, group chat, or any of the SL fun that makes people want to work in world.

Some people don't get that "fun" part. They should not be making any decisions for SL. But then they just want their investments to pay off. If not? They close SL. SL belongs to them not us. Believe me when I say multi millionaires do not care at all about the residents of Second Life. Not one bit.

Who knows. maybe one of the opengl geometry exporters the game modding community uses routinely could be used to export the prim gun and it could be converted to mesh with some effort and skill.

Or maybe just make a more elaborate cooler looking gun in mesh and it becomes the next best seller.

I'll wait and see. What I do know is if this bet is wrong and the economy dives into a domino effect because existing businesses collapse then LL will have learned to not listen to their buddies and instead not have buddies. But it won't matter since LL will be bankrupt lol. On the other hand if the economy bustles and everyone is happy because people make mesh components and sell them full perms for others to construct things with then great. It was a good bet. Either way it is a seriously risky bet.

But I do know if only a few take the market then you can kiss SL goodbye when all that land owned by the current designers is abandoned followed by the estates folding. Because that right there is LL's revenue stream. A delicate balance this SL economy.

The same people who cannot make an email notification stop properly are the ones you want to program in a full 3D modeling tool into the viewer?  ..

Let's not be confusing a defective blogging platform with intellect. OK? You are insulting people and it is this very uber geeky defective personality disorder that turns people off so they leave SL.

And you are a blue mars person. You have much to gain by SL closing. You work for the competition. People need to keep that in mind when they consider anything you write or say about SL anywhere.

Based on the stuff I am hearing about what it is going to cost to upload and/or rezz mesh then the concern about amateur wannabees ripping everything from some 3d site can be put back into the wait and see box. In fact what I am hearing might kill mesh for a lot of applications completely except when it is a custom job or something that is going to sell for $150 USD levels. Since such builds are not going to be rezzing on a 512 m2 parcel near you then they will be the domain of large parcel owners anyway. I.e.; people with money already.

On the other hand small mesh accessories like armor and shoes are going to look great.

The issue I have is really simple. If LL allows an extreme minority to suddenly take the market then most of the economy will vanish. Then the land gets abandoned. Then the estates go put of business. Then LL files bankruptcy. Then I have no more SL. The risk of this domino effect is large so LL has to make it so it is painful to play in the mesh game.

As for PIOF or premium to upload stopping rippoffs? There's plenty in SL ripping and selling that are premium. That argument is invalid. Next.

The larger issue now is a few people behaving as though LL just gave them an endorsement to act out like a severe aspbergers affected person. Well I have news for them. There are game devs in SL you don't know about. People with real games out there right now they own and publish. They are experts in mesh and game character development. They are going to have a blast with mesh in SL. Heck they already have multiple games worth of models just sitting there already. So it is unlikely the people behaving in ridiculous manners are going to suddenly get rich. I've seen some of the work of these ranters. It is crude and amateur compared to real game dev work. We will see who "gets all de monies". lol

The video demonstrates a complete lack of adult professionalism and LL's endorsement of it reflects upon them. Mesh or no mesh acting out lie this is ridiculous and does not do any good and has no positive influence on emotionally stable people.

That said the expressions of glee over the probability a lot of livlihoods will be destroyed indicates this is going to become a matter of consumer and business regulation.

    Get over it.

They also demand more and more of sl resources...

Meshes will reduce resource consumption because they are more efficient than parametric and sculpted prims.

you know what? the people you are worried about with the crappy on board graphics are unlikely to experience much of an improvement. For the rest with computers capable of running SL there is not a current resource issue. And the issue with sim resources is crappy scripts overloading the region and swapping to disk. the amount of resources a sim burns on knowing where something was rezzed is minimal.

In addition I's seen the work people are saying is great. And it looks like crap. Period. it has not the detail we have with prims and sculpties. If LL turns SL into crappy looking avatars land then they will have put themselves down and will be gone in 2 years.

And not everyone wants to be daz victoria statues.

There is a lot of hogwash being proselytized about mesh. SL didn't need saving. It was doing fine until someone started trying to downgrade it.

Don't get me wrong. I think mesh will be a great option that will make builds better for people that have modern computers with GT2xx or better GPUs. But the "fantastic avatars" are crap so far.

  4. Ad hominem is a last resort tactic for people that have failed in a debate.

As  for rules one would think the advertising of non LL services, or for  that matter advertising services at all, might be against the  guidelines.

All you can do is abuse report people violating the rules and hope LL decides to deal with the problems. And then go about your business and participate in threads where you want and ignore those who seek to control threads. It is not worth getting upset over. I no longer participate in this forum much because it is hostile territory.

As for competing services? Anyone allowing a third party to collect information that could be used for nefarious purposes should be asking who the real life people are that own the data collection service. Whatever that service may be.

  5. ...

On a personal note, Mason Kingsford is the most professional person I have met. He is friendly, kind and very much a part of the 2ndHub.com community. He isn't just a nameless, faceless corporation who don't even look at their blogs, pages or profiles.
Your personal opinion of him doesn't make it fact.

    ...

Actually he is a faceless entity. His domain is masked. His trademarks are not registered. He has no actual contact information published. Not even an email address. This is a severe warning sign. Especially given the service he runs collects SL account relationship data. So perhaps you are correct that he isn't "just a nameless faceless corporation". But at minimum he does indeed appear to be nameless and faceless. I never could determine who was involved with that competing service until he began advertising his competing service on LL's forum in this discussion.

I have to admit I laughed out loud when I read your carefully constructed "nameless faceless" sentence.

Now maybe Mason is a great guy and totally straight up. I just can't tell. I don't know him. Never met him. So I cannot judge Mason. I expected to see some corporate information posted on his service. Since all I could find is a message form and everything else was hidden then, at the time, I decided it was beyond my tolerance for risk factors.

Jennifur people in SL use every available vertice. So they will simoply make more complex items that look fantastic.

And you assume everyone wants these mesh avatars. Most of what I have seen looks like the sort of garbage you see in WoW. However I'm confident SL will soon begin to be referred to as Victoria Life.

And ARC is garbage. Everyone knows it. What the ktris/fr of these avatars while in motion? What will it be when they have all the good stuff attached?
