  1. /me passes round hard hats (not because I foresee any problems - just because people love fetish-wear in SL :smileywink:)
  2. Thanks, Venus, For some reason the usual info didn't come through via SL Beta Group to me. Fuller details of what is happening to the grid during the rolling restarts is here on Oskar's thread http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Server/Deploys-for-the-Week-of-2011-04-11/m-p/811755 I wonder what else I am missing - I'm still having problems keeping up with everything on the forums.
  3. You can also see where people are by running your mouse over the mini map, which reveals the names of all those green dots.
  4. Oddly enough, I was having similar issues just yesterday, and your specs are pretty similar to mine. I would suggest you check you have the latest graphics driver as this has worked for me. Today, all is working well again. I would also suggest you come off the Beta viewer, unless you really enjoy testing. Phoenix is my viewer of choice, and gives me minimal problems. Good luck!
  5. Please change your password and hopefully this will update your account. It's worth a try at any rate. There is a JIRA currently - someone with similar issue to your own - https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-25240 Please add your own comments and screenshots to this. (And note, that although the reporter is advised to consult with Phoenix Viewer support, this issue is affecting ALL viewers.)
  6. Tinkywinky, if you are wanting to quickly locate other avatars, have you tried Phoenix viewer? The built-in radar list enables you to pull into closeup view any avatar within range.
  7. I only know the option to view all avatars as particle clouds on my own viewer. By going into "Advanced" menu, "debug settings" typing in "renderunloadedavatar", and setting to "false"
  8. And a reminder - often people and things in Second Life - and on the internet generally - are not quite what they seem or claim to be.
  9. Welcome, baron9, to Second Life and the Second Life forums. Its wonderful to hear your enthusiasm, and you will, I am sure, enjoy Second Life and learn a lot. I've been in Second Life since November 2007, and every week brings with it new experiences, some good, some bad. Second Life - like real life - evolves all the time. The only true way to learn about it, especially for a research project, is by immersing yourself fully into it, meeting as many people as possible, and thinking outside the box. For example, the names you will become familiar with on these forums are only a very small percentage of the people who log into Second Life. Some of these also have Twitter and Facebook, youtube, Flickr, Snapzilla, etc etc etc. To some, Second Life is very much a social networking site, to others it is quite the opposite, and provides for them a place to have quiet time with little interaction. Nothing is quite as it seems in Second Life, always be aware of that. You will not always get true answers from people, and so your final analysis will only be from your viewpoint. I hope there are others at your school who are also taking part in the same research project. Being able to compare experiences will be very interesting I am sure. Good luck to you.

Fenn MacMoragh wrote: So, I guess none of you people were ever noobs... you came into Second Life fully knowing all there is, BAH... and now you know why people don't stick around, instead of maybe offering to help you make fun of them and want to blow them up. I like cats, but even so a cartoon book about 101 uses of a dead cat was highly funny. It's all about context. And yes, I've been noob (in fact my tag line says still that I'm learning) Some of my best friends are noobs. And if you take a look through the forum archives, you'll see I've helped to "rescue" several noobs who had ghosted and were locked out of Second Life. But there are noobs, and there are noobs, and as well as blowing them up, they make great ... pogosticks .... hoverboards ... throwing objects... Sorry for you that you couldn't get the humour.
  11. Kascha Matova wrote: @Mari : You know what kills me about that montage? The part that prevents me from regaining any sense of composure? It's that the hair is STILL on the skeleton and you still had the presence of mind to hold onto the umbrella! LOLOLOL :smileyvery-happy: Priceless! :smileyhappy: Hey, I'm like that in real life too when I get struck by lightning !!!! :smileywink: Glad you liked.
  12. Mog Munster wrote: Oh no! :smileysurprised: Haha that is hilarious. :smileyvery-happy: Interestingly enough, the weather system supports lightning feature. I'm really pleased that you got a laugh out of my pictures. I certainly had a lot of fun on your land making them, and you've shown that you don't need to own a whole private sim to create something really fabulous, entertaining, interesting, and inspirational. I love the mainland. Well done, Mog.:smileyhappy:
  13. Oscar Eldrich wrote: This is just a regular noob, but I wish I could explode into pieces. I'm sure I'd do it all the time. :smileyvery-happy: Loved your photos - you "noob" haha ;-)))) But you can make your avatar explode. A friend of mine had this from xstreet/marketplace. It's really quite gruesome. https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Exploding-Avatar-Animator/53522 Said friend also had these - exploding noobs Which are these: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/SasTech-Noob-Zombie-Rezzer/88146 Extremely stress relieving it is to shoot them into pieces ;-)))))
  14. Welcome to the Second Life forums, tinkywinky. I'm sure the Linden people with their God tools are capable of doing this, but no, it wouldn't be possible for other people to turn other avatar's into particle clouds, except on your own viewer. That would mean changing lines of data belonging to that avatar, and only those with God tools can make that sort of adjustment. it's very doubtful anyone would want to. It's more likely that a slight interruption in connection has caused this to happen.
  15. eatingwomen wrote: i want to make contact with women on this site-can i do this without upgrading I am very wary of saying welcome to Second Life and Second Life forums, simply because of the name you have chosen for yourself. It seems others in this thread are assuming you want to make contact with women on this site to "date" them, but with that awful name it looks like you are a cannibal, or perhaps advertising that you are possibly good at cunnilingus (/me rolls my head backwards and laughs a little too insanely). Either way, just your one line of dialogue has made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end - and not in a good way. Please explain what you do mean exactly by "... without upgrading". Do you mean you do not wish to become a Premium account holder? Or is it that you wish to make contact via this website, rather than actually logging into the main world of Second Life? Regardless of my own personal feelings towards you already, I am sure you will find exactly what you are looking for in Second Life - even a woman to eat if that is what you enjoy - all is possible in a virtual world where the only limits are your own imagination.
  16. I don't think it's anything to do with the influx of teens, because they've always had access to the forums, but I do sometimes wonder if its Tolya doing what he did last year - remember? He created loads of newbie alts with different personalities to test the rest of us.
  17. You've done well with your prim allowance. I love the rain - but only in SL ! :smileyhappy: There seemed to be a freak storm while I was there !!!
  18. But, valerie, this is how I see your avatar. Very much like Ava Gardner you are.
  19. Here is a full-on moonlight shot with my gorgeous SL partner, Janelle. The moon was high, and so was I ;-)))
  20. Beautiful you are, valerie. Always like a film star.
  21. Without a doubt, go and see the owner of the 5th Avenue sim, the owner of Wetherby's store. She has recently had another sim added, and around the main store is a busy little shopping mall, full of reasonable-to-rent units. I am sure you would have much success with your goods if you set up a store there, as the traffic is good, and Mrs W does actively encourage visitors to the main store to also frequent the mall stores.
  22. Venus Petrov wrote: Mari, oh what memories of that track! Your post made me go to youtube to watch the Thompson Twins' Extended version. Its a fab track, isn't it Venus ? :smileyhappy: It was one of three (vinyl!!) singles I bought myself with some of the birthday money I got for my 21st birthday! Ah happy memories. (The other records I bought were Radio GaGa by Queen and What Is Love by Howard Jones.) In SL, it was always played, on a loop, in Mobit Sandbox (now gone), and my best mate in SL at the time, my mentor, said it was a song made for me, because I was always making photos of us and plastering them all over the apartment I rented at Noob Island! "I have a picture, pinned to my wall... indeed!"
  23. I might remove the other post, this is how I'm feeling in SL right now... I'm not scared I'm myself cause I'm not there But it's unfair I can see you when you're naked I smile cause I know you feel me inside Touch this Can you feel it just a menace I'm a ghost girl I am haunting in my own world It's fun Not to answer to no one I'm a ghost girl I'm a ghost girl I'm not scared I'm myself cause I'm not there But it's not fair I can see you when you're naked I smile Cause I know you feel me inside Touch this Can you feel it just a menace I'm a ghost girl I am haunting in my own world I'm a ghost girl I am haunting in my own world I'm a ghost girl I'm a ghost girl I'm a ghost girl I'm a ghost gïrl (No ghosts in SL at the moment you see :smileywink: so I have to do all the haunting myself.)
  24. I have a picture, pinned to my wall. An image of you and of me and we're laughing and loving it all. Look at our life now, tattered and torn. We fuss and we fight and delight in the tears that we cry until dawn Hold me now, warm my heart stay with me, let loving start (let loving start) You say I'm a dreamer, we're two of a kind Both of us searching for some perfect world we know we'll never find So perhaps I should leave here, yeah yeah go far away But you know that there's no where that I'd rather be than with you here today [Chorus] You ask if I love you, well what can I say? You know that I do and if this is just one of those games that we play So I'll sing you a new song, please don't cry anymore and then I'll ask your forgiveness, though I don't know just what I'm asking it for [Chorus] Really can't describe currently, with lyrics, how I feel in SL, or how SL makes me feel currently. Maybe too much white noise ^^
