  1. Wireless is not very reliable for SL. It may be that you're getting just a little more interference in one spot than in another, so if your router is a little flaky it can't make a decent connection. Try rebooting it by unplugging it from the power for a few minutes. Unless it's really impossible to do, you might also make a direct cable connection for your PC. Vista is probably not the issue. Plenty of people are still using Vista and handling SL.
  2. That is by now a well-known bug >>> Wrong parcel name used with 'Can't rez object .. because the owner of this land does not allow it' error message Essentially, the servers are mistakenly deciding that you are rezzing something too close to the boundary of your parcel, and that it will in fact end up on your neighbor's land. Until the Linden Lan devlopers find a way to fix the bug, one good way to beat it yourself is to try rezzing things only at the exact center of your parcel -- or as close to the center as you can. Stand as near to the center of your Linden Home as you can, and rez a simple cube over and over and over again until you find a spot where it works. Once you know where the spot is, rez anything else you want there and drag it to wherever you wish.
  3. It works for me. I wonder if you are seeing server lag. Does it work if you move to a different sim? Can you drag the embedded notecard to your inventory and open it there? Click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT to add information. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  4. I have never tried to do anything with it, but sounds should be cached in the same folder where your viewer caches textures. Try something like C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\SecondLife\cache . Until very recently, the cache of sound files was routinely deleted when the user logged off, at least with the official SL viewer. I don't know if that's still the case and unfortunately can't check at the moment because I don't have a viewer loaded on this laptop.
  5. Routers are not all that expensive, as computer components go, so you might want to just replace yours. I was very surprised two years ago at how much more stable my connection was after I replaced my own router.
  6. There are way too many possible solutions to list here, so let me give you a handy wiki article to peruse >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Inventory_loss . In addition to the suggestions on that page, let me add one that Linden Lab wouldn't tell you about. The Firestorm viewer has a built-in function called Area Search, accessible from the World menu. With it, you can locate items by name or owner anywhere in your sim. It's a great tool, used sparingly so as not to overload the servers.

    won't update

At the risk of sounding flippant, there's a good reason why they call it the Beta viewer. It probably has been good points, but it would be wise to keep another viewer ready as your backup, just in case something like this happens. Try the standard V3 viewer, or Firestorm, both of which are well out of beta stage and, although not totally free of bugs, are more reliable than what you have been using.
  8. Use a different browser. In particular, if you have been using IE, try Forefox or Chrome instead. IE and SL haven't worked well together for a long time.
  9. There are no aps that will allow you to use sl graphically on an iPad. The best you can do is PocketMetaverse. It will let you ....... Chat in local chat Chat in IMs TP (most of the time... This sometimes fails) View photos and textures (Though accessing inventory will often cause the ap to crash) Listen to the parcel stream. Accept new inventory from avatars. **if you are logged on and receive an inventory offer from a scripted object such as from marketplace or a vendor then it WILL autodecline and does not go to trash. So be careful of this. Accept and make friendship offers. You will not be able to see a thing in world, however.
  10. If it helps, here's the note that I put in the LSL wiki last Fall when I was wrestling with multiple sit targets .... If an object has multiple seats (each seat has a script that sets a sit target with llSitTarget, or the linkset has a script that assigns several llLinkSitTargets), the following method determines which sit target an avatar ends up at: If the prim that is clicked on has a sit target and that sit target is not full, that sit target is used. If the prim that is clicked on has no sit target, and one or more other linked prims have sit targets that are not full, the sit target of the prim with the lowest link number will be used.
  11. See my answer in this thread about exactly the same problem yesterday >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Controls/I-have-several-gongs-and-cannot-hear-them-but-I-hear-the-bird/qaq-p/1546403 . If you need more information, read the JIRA on this bug >>> Sounds aren't played at first attempt
  12. Unless you want your parcel tenant to be able to terraform his parcel, set the SIM's permissions to prevent terraforming by anyone but you and your sim manager. That overrides anything that a parcel owner wants to do.
  13. I made the same mistake when I read it at first too, Lindal. I can imagine a hypothetical case like this. The OP owes Person B L$ for something, but Person B is really ticked at the OP and has blocked him. So, the OP wants to pay the debt, but wants to be sure that Person B will actually receive it. More than that, the OP knows that Person B won't receive an IM or a notecard, but wonders if a friendly note attached to the payment -- an apology, maybe? -- will make it through. If I were just a little bit more curious, I'd mute my alt and find out.

  15. That 512 sq m. allowance is essentially a waiver for the land fee on your lowest level of tier. That means you can buy a plot of land anywhere you want to on the Mainland and apply the waiver to your land use fee. You pay for buying the land in the first place, of course, and for anything you build on it. If the land is less than or equal to 512 sq m. in area, though, that's all you pay. If you bought more land --- say , 1024 sq m --- you'd apply the waiver and end up paying only $3.00/month instead of the $8.00 you would normally pay. See https://secondlife.com/my/account/landfees.php? and http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043#Section_.3.2
  16. Start here >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Getting_Ready_to_Learn_LSL . Then work through a few of the basic tutorials at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Tutorial . It can also help to take a course in LSL scripting at someplace like Builders Brewery or Caledon University. For many people -- fast learners -- it is also smart to get hold of full perm scripts and try modifying them a little bit at a time until you get a feel for how they work. When you finally have written a script of your own and have questions about how to improve it, post it here and we'll be glad to help. ETA: You can't apply a random force to the wiggly end of a flexi prim. It wiggles only in your viewer, so we have no scripted control over it. You can move the other end randomly, however, and the wiggly end will respond. One way is to put llSetPos with a random increment into a timer. That's a typical way for making tails twitch, for example.
  17. If you have a non-technical issue related to billing concerns, you can call the Linden Lab billing team at the following toll-free numbers: US/Canada: 800-294-1067 France: 0805-101-490 Germany: 0800-664-5510 Japan: 0066-33-132-830 Portugal: 800-814-450 Spain: 800-300-560 UK: 0800-048-4646 Brazil: 0800-762-1132 Long distance ( not free, but you can use Skype to save some cost ) : 703-286-6277 **Note: Support is offered only in English
  18. Clearing your cache makes the problem worse, so don't ever do that. Cache is a local storage space on your own computer, designed to hold images that you have already downloaded, so that your graphics card doesn't have to re-download them before rendering them another time. If you clear your cache, you are forcing your computer to download all images again. That slows down rendering for you and it adds to rendering lag for everyone else in the sim as well. You should only clear your cache if it is clear that you have corrupted images, or if you have missing items from inventory. Rezzing can be agonizingly slow in clubs sometimes. Some club owners put way too many textures in their builds, and have extra scripted features -- game boards, welcome boards with pics on them -- that keep displaying new textures all the time. Then people arrive wearing loads of attachments with textures that have to be rendered. All you can do in self-defence is drop your draw distance to something incredibly low and increase it gradually. Firestorm and Phoenix have a special feature that does that automatically. See http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/progressive_draw_distance . It works.
  19. Unfortunately, there is no way to "take back" your L$. He will have to agree to give them back to you. For now, I suggest being patient. This is a holiday weekend in the U.S., and many people arrange to take an extra day so that they can relax with family for the first long weekend of the summer. Your landlord may simply be enjoying the holiday. Send him a polite note to ask what is happening, and hope for a response by Monday. There's not much that you can do beyond that. Linden Lab will not generally become involved in a dispute between residents. BTW, please remove the lkandlord's name from your post here. Naming another person involved in a dispute can be considered a violation of the Community Standards.
  20. As soon as you open the Pay window to send L$ to an av, it has a Comment field that you can write a short note in. Firestorm has had that for a while. I don't know about other viewers.
  22. If you IM with, Pay Linden dollars to, or give inventory to someone you muted, that person is automatically unblocked. Chat history informs you of what's happened. ETA: Ah! I read the question backwards. Irene is right. The answer is not clear. It's easy enough to find out, though. Block your alt and then have her send you L$10. See what happens. Even if the experiment fails miserably, the most you're out is L$10.
