Those look like they are Applier only -- are there system layers for BOM?

Yes. Mine came with a system pants and undershirt (for the upper part) system layers.

The MP description could certainly be clearer, but it does say that they are for classic avatars. It's too bad sellers don't spell things out better. When they make it this subtle, I suspect they lose sales to new people who don't know that BOM and classic-avatar compatibility are the same.

Well, if you can just change your first name only then what I said can be disregarded. I've never had a system last name to know how it works.

One's original name will always be available to change back to, whether one has changed first, last, or both names.

Hello all I need some advice. Noticed recently that at many places I go to there seems to be an ongoing issue with loading textures. Also I have just made some shoes and uploaded some 1024 sized textures that are jpegs. Those textures are really struggling to load on the shoes as i'm trying to click to change my shoe textures. Though it isn't just a problem with textures of the shoes being slow and not loading fast. I have had problems with textures at events and places I have gone to that also struggle with loading textures. Anyone got any good advice on how I can get textures to load faster inworld. Thanks.

I do not claim to be knowledgeable.

I notice very slow loading of textures sometimes. It seems to me that it's just that some days SL is slow to load textures, and other days, it's much faster. I do not think it has anything to do with my computer, which is quite powerful, or my connection, which is 1,000 gbps fiber. These don't change significantly over the short term like texture-loading speed does.

The only thing that I know of that I can do to speed loading is decrease draw distance drastically, which doesn't really speed it up, but does seem to make the textures that are close load faster.

Yes, that is how it works. If you need to NOT pay extra when switching plots you have to gamble a bit. It is the most land you held in the last month -- even for a second.   Sorry. Many to most of us learned the hard way and sometimes there IS no other way except to pay just once.

Also make sure that in the web backend that you have your current land that you want only.  This changes from time to time but in the past it would set your tier at that higher level until you changed it.  I don't think it is that way any longer but again it could change so looking is good.

Now, it just charges you for what you used during the billing month. I keep mine set to the highest level.

. . . suppose you make a boat and texture it carefully. If a customer chooses to apply different textures to the boat, which might look awful or even include obscene slogans, then other people might assume it was your work, which reflects badly on you.

If the boat were mod, then no reasonable person would assume that the appearance had not been modified by the owner.

Cell phones are a very "no mod" item, are they breaking some nonexistent rule by being so? "no mod" in SL prevents counterfeiting and protects the creator's ownership of the design. Not all creator's set it up and that's their right to do so.

Any owner of a cell phone with the necessary knowledge and skills is free to modify it.

Please explain how making items non-modifiable prevents counterfeiting.

Yes i read your whole post.  Seeing if a purchased item is no mod or not isn't at all difficult. Get the demo.  Wear it (or rez it, whichever is the intended method of deployment). Right click.  Select "edit".

Demos may be, and likely will be, no-mod even if the product in mod. After all, if the demo were modifiable, it would be pretty easy to turn it into the product, wouldn't it?

  7. I discovered that a few of my outfit folders were empty. I was on Firestorm, so I logged off and logged back on on the official LL viewer. The same outfit folders were still empty.

Since outfit folders are created by saving what one is wearing, an empty one cannot be created. I'm certain that I didn't delete the contents of the folders. Since I saw the same thing with two different viewers, the contents had to have been deleted on the server.

    What is going on?

I'm less than a week old and with much effort and help from two friendly people (and Youtube) I was able to put together a nice avatar. I'm now afraid to touch anything because I don't want to mess it up. (baked on mesh took me what seemed like hours to understand!) I also found a really cute outfit that I adore. It's nothing flashy but it really suits my avatar I think. If I were playing an MMORPG I wouldn't bother crafting/buying another outfit once I found 'the one' and normally in those games no one cares. But I know Second Life is a lot different so I have what might be a silly question.

Are you expected to have numerous outfits for your avatar, and is it weird to only have one or two that you rotate?

I might buy another outfit just as an alternative, but I really don't see myself being a shopaholic now that my avatar is set up. I also noticed a couple of people with their avatar's profiles reading things like "mesh avatars only" and "be well put together" notations about people who want to reach out to them. Despite watching Youtube videos I don't know the culture of Second Life very well yet and don't want to find that my lack of wardrobe hinders me from making acquaintances or friends.

How does this forum feel about this?

Don't worry too much and just go with what you enjoy and feel good about.

I have always thought that SL was very much like a big adult game of dolls. I really enjoy tweaking my avatar's appearance, shopping for clothes and avatar enhancements, and dressing her. I have hundreds of outfits, and I enjoy changing clothes frequently. That doesn't mean that you should.

I could have about the same SL I have with a few dozen outfits instead of hundreds if I didn't enjoy having lots of clothes. I'd have a few outfits with shorts and tanks, a few with jeans and tee shirts or sweaters, a few officewear types, a couple of formals, and a couple of swimsuits.

  9. I dress seasonally. Except for the ones that are for year-round wear, all my outfits are labeled with an abbreviation for the season, and I move the off-season ones out of the system outfits folder during the off-seasons. Typical summer outfits are shorts with tank tops and flip-flops, sundresses, and the like. Typical winter outfits include sweaters, jackets, coats, scarves, earmuffs, etc.

  10. How to proceed also depends on what you want to do. If you plan to be nude in the presence of others a lot, then a mesh body is something you'll want soon. If not, it's less important, as the hands can be the only parts people regularly see.  You could buy mesh hands, and I guess you still can. The feet are by far the worst part of the classic body; they are very ugly. If you plan to always wear boots, that isn't a problem. There is a lot more difference between the classic body and a mesh body than there is between a classic head and a mesh head. IMHO, a classic head can look very nice; it just won't have the added features that mesh heads have.

In short, if you plan to stay dressed, I think you'd do well to take plenty of time deciding and enjoy SL in the interim. If you don't, get a mesh body and wait to get a mesh head. One downside for some of us in waiting to get a mesh head is that we become very attached to our particular facial appearance. It is easy to have a nice-looking mesh face. It is very hard to reproduce a particular face on a mesh head.

This is a great idea. I'd personally love to see a waterway system similar to the linden road system, though I'm not sure how feasible it is. Shipping canals for boats. Maybe even an absolutely unnecessary lock or two, just for the ambience.

And maybe a bit of a buffer around continents that provide a little more usable water, since the Blake Sea is finite and the lottery jackpot will insist on evading me. (I realize this would require extra regions, so it's probably a non-starter. Still... a guy can dream.)

The regions that were needed could be very low-load, as they would have nothing permanent in them except water and the underlying land. Therefore, I would think that they would be low-cost to establish and operate.

Rigged animated meshes are the killer. Processing those scales linearly. The more you have the more time it takes, the slower it goes - every single frame.  This is especially true for bodies with high poly counts, one specific body being notably far worse than all the others.

After someone posted that mesh bodies with their many faces were the main cause of lag, I did an experiment. I was in a room with about a dozen people on an island where no one else was. We all detached our mesh bodies to see what would happen. The frame rate didn't change.

    Comments?

It depends on what a new Maitreya body might be, which we can only speculate about. So far, Lara has been kept up to date and there isn't 'technically' any real need for a new one, there aren't any new ground-breaking features in SL which would require it to be made from scratch. If Maitreya releases a new body I figure it's more likely that they either want to appeal to a new body type (such as curvy) or that they want to make a differently shaped body (a lot of people don't like the shoulder area of the Lara). In the latter case, certain things such as trousers may still work, whereas tops mightn't. But again, that's purely speculative, and even if they do release a new body there's nothing stopping anyone from continuing using Lara.

For clothing that covers the shoulders, it won't matter because they won't show, and for clothing that leaves shoulders bare, it won't matter because they'll be uncovered.

  14. FWIW, I have enjoyed flying helicopters in SL after pretty much giving up on planes. Because they can fly slow and are very maneuverable, helicopters can avoid many of the problems that planes have. I have several different brands that I cannot recall right now. Most have simplified controls. One has very realistic controls, to the level of detail of having to manipulate the choke just right to get the engine to start. I never mastered it well enough to enjoy flying it.

Did you check the inventory of linked prims of that object as well? (edit-linked and there should be little left and right arrows to step through each linked prim in a linkset in the build menu)

That was it. One of the child prims had a lot of contents. It was still loading after five minutes.

    Thanks for helping me understand.

    How does this affect performance?
