  1. Some years ago, you could sign up for a service with Google. You got a code that you could paste into a window in your browser preferences. Translation occurred on the fly, and was of good quality. It cost me a few dollars per month, never as much as $5.00. Then Google changed something, I couldn't understand how it worked anymore, and could never get it to work again.

Is there anything like this that integrates with the viewer that works now?

  2. Why do residents have to resort to asking each other questions like this? I can visualize a tool on the web site that could scan a PC and tell what upgrade(s) would help and an indication of how much. Surely, people who understand how viewers work could design such a tool. Is this too much to expect?

I just reviewed the information that is on the web site at https://secondlife.com/system-requirements. To my non-techie eyes, it appears to be out-of-date. Worse, it has too much technical jargon and assumes a degree of technical knowledge that many, if not most, residents and prospective residents don't have. It could be a lot more useful if CPUs, for example, were listed in groups like "Not Recommended," "Adequate," "Recommended," and "Superior," and were listed within the groups in order or desirability. It could even start by offering some choices about desired performance and change the recommendations accordingly, so that people could choose lower performance when budgets dictated and still get useful information.

So, Lara isn't "dying" per se, but as more and more new creators come into the picture, they are going to need the dev kit (which is by application only and the brand needs to send them out to people), but at this point they are completely unresponsive when it comes to getting it so very few if any newer creators are able to get the kit. Plus, many other newer bodies are out that people use and since little to no new creators are going to be able to create for Maitreya, it is eventually going to become less and less popular. In other words, if no one can get the kit, there will stop being new clothing made for it, people will move on, and it will be rendered obsolete.

What will keep all the people who are already making clothing for Maitreya from continuing to make it? Considering that there are so many, I doubt there'll be a shortage of clothing for it in my lifetime.

What annoys me more is when autohide doesn't automatically UN-hide the body when you take the garment off.

The current Maitreya autohide script does just that.

Unlike many of the posters here, I have had excellent results with the current Maitreya autohide. My bane is no-mod clothing containing the old version that does not unhide when detached.

There are so many appliers out there for Maitreya etc. that I can't all use at once because they are not made for bom, just appliers so only one item per body region (right?) - is there any way for the end user to convert those appliers into a bom layer or is that only possible by contacting the creator (many of which are unfortunately not active anymore)?

    Thank you!!

Although it's not supported, I have had no problems wearing multiple Maitreya tattoo layers at the same time. I did it so I could wear multiple applier tattoos. It was a way to have asymmetrical arm tattoos.

  6. I am the founder and sole owner of a group that owns a mainland parcel. I have a coalesced object that I am trying to rez on the parcel. I have tried repeatedly over a day and several relogs without success. When I try to rez it, a message saying the owner of the land does not allow it and telling me use the land tool to see land ownership appears.

What is going on? How can I fix it?

The complaints I do have (the spaghetti arms and shoulders) would need fixes that broke 7 years of clothes - and are, therefore, not worth it.

Not necessarily. The shoulders are only a problem when they are exposed. We need two versions of the body, one with improved shoulder-arm shape for use with clothing that bares them, and one with unchanged shoulders for use with clothing that covers them. Of course, going forward, creators could make all clothing for the improved version.

  8. I have read many times that too many scripts running in a region can cause lag. I am wondering how much difference it makes if the scripts are short and simple versus long and complex. The context is a building where I have many copies of the same scripted furniture. It would be 98% as useful to have only a few copies with the full scripts. I don't want to just delete the scripts from the other copies because users are likely to be confused. What I'm considering is replacing them with a short, simple script that would tell people who clicked on them to use the ones that had the full scripts. I only want to do this if it would make a difference.

It's not the ground or the ocean that makes life at the surface laggy, it's user-added textures. People slap 1024x1024 textures on everything, just because they can. It only takes a few of those to start giving even the fastest video card a workout.

It seems like an easy fix would be to devise algorithms to determine a default resolution necessary for an acceptable appearance for whatever a texture is being used for and render it at that resolution. Perhaps let users opt for a higher resolution for a price.

i think many "oldies" remember the basic LL viewer, and it's success (not)

The concept of having a limited set of functions available for new users was sound. The execution was poor because the people who made the decisions about what to include did not understand SL users. Nobody wanted to use the basic viewer because it didn't let them do things that everyone wants to do immediately.

I have long thought that LL would do well to revive the idea and do a better job with it.

Or even able to put money into the game by virtue of not having or having access to credit services like CC's or Paypal because of having a spotty credit history. That became even more difficult when 3rd party exchanges were banned as at least some pre-pay credit cards were usable for them. Fortunately those problems are over for me today but back when I started in S/L (2009) that was a factor that led me to Opensimulator for most of my virtual living.

My personal experience is that when men cannot use CCs to buy lindens, it's because they don't want their wives to know they are in SL.

After you sign up for premium plus, you should receive an email from LL, and the support phone number is in that email.

I signed up for PP the first day it was available. I have not received such an email.

No, because the $11.99 is a recurring expense.

I see this is my opportunity to pay $49.99 to change the name of "Dear Leader" -- but I think not. I think by having this name, that dormant account keeps a griefer from using it.

If an an account's name is changed, the original name is unavailable for any other account and remains available for that account to change back to.

  14. Let me explain how I've used links outside outfits and why I asked the question.

My Clothing folder is organized by type of item, e.g., Dresses, Skirts, Tops, Pants, etc. There is also an "Outfits" folder within my Clothing folder for ensembles containing more than one item, e.g., top, skirt, and shoes. In such an instance, I have been putting links to the components in the appropriate folder for the item, e.g., a link to the top in the Tops folder. When I started doing it that way, I assumed tht links consumed less storage than copies, which would otherwise serve as well. If they don't, I may as well use copies.
