  1. I always use the script in a single prim, never in a linkset.

    I changed it to use llGetObjectName and deleted the line with llResetScript, and now it works.

    Thanks for the help, and please don't laugh too hard at me.

  2. For many years I have used this simple script to display the name, always of a single, unlinked prim, as hovertext:

    default
    {
        state_entry()
        {
            llSetText(llGetLinkName(0), <1.0,1.0,0.0>, 1);
            llResetScript();
        }
    }

    It worked perfectly for many years until some months ago. Now, the hovertext is always "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000" instead of the name of the prim. I have read the documentation for llGetLinkName, but I can't figure it out.

    Will someone who actually understands scripts tell me how to fix it, please.

    Thanks.

  3. I confess to not having read all the replies to the this thread. That, said, SL is only expensive if one owns considerable land. In my case, about 85 percent of what I spend in SL goes to expenses associated with my land. The rest goes for avatar components and enhancements, clothing, and miscellaneous expenses. I can easily earn that much from tips for dancing. Therefore, if I didn't choose to own a considerable amount of land, I would never need to spend any RL money on SL.

    During my first year, January 13, 2007 through January 12, 2008, I challenged myself to be self-supporting in SL. At the beginning, I bought $20 worth of Lindens so I could buy what I needed to have a nice avatar (It cost less then, but the avatars were not nearly as nice.). I considered that a loan. At the end of the year, I cashed out $23. I had earned enough to pay for everything I bought plus $3.00 extra. I felt that I had accomplished my goal, and then bought my first land, since when I have never been self-supporting again.

    I view SL as a hobby, and compare the cost to other hobbies. It is less expensive than some and more expensive than others.

    I get more than my money's worth from SL.

    Here is a link to what was the latest and the fixes that went into it though no actual update link. https://slinkstyle.com/body-parts-version-numbers-current/

    Ironically, that page has a link at the bottom that reads, "Visit a Redelivery Terminal in Second Life."

  5. Here is where I am now with the Lelutka EvoX Raven head. In both photos, I am on the left wearing the Raven head, and my alt is on the right wearing a system head. All suggestions for slider adjustments are appreciated. Looking at these, I have decided that small changes for the better, something comparable what one might see IRL if one lost 20 pounds, probably would be fine, as long as I am easily recognizable.2135534005_Front-JenwithEvoXRavenonLtHetonRt1024x512.thumb.png.8b816ea6c7b3f1e7073c303e1bd8311c.png1327741817_SideView-JenwithRavenonLtHetonRt1024x512.thumb.png.af6bc5825385b6feb4767496f63eccfa.png

    Thanks for your help!

  6. Thanks to all for the helpful comments.

    The reason I am trying to get a leg up by asking for advice from knowledgeable people instead of just trying demos is that trying demos is so time-consming. It might not be for someone who understood how shape sliders interact, but it is for me.

    I did get the Raven head, and last night I spent a couple of hours tweaking sliders. One big obstacle was that the nose is at the wrong height, and I didn't see a way to move it. Any ideas?

    Please keep the advice coming.

    For awhile it might be cheaper but over time, people will raise the price.  Not ALL land can be waterfront so that which is will always be more desirable.  Desirable/scarce = Expensive.

    It would be pretty easy to design a map with all or nearly all land on the waterfront. Think many small islands and narrow peninsulas.

  8. I am a person for whom keeping my facial appearance as constant as possible is very important. I had the same face from 2007 until 2019, and I felt that to be me, I had to continue to look the same. I got my mesh head in 2019. I had a lot of help making it look like my system head, and I expended a lot of effort. I did succeed. Here is my Lelutka Simone mesh head on the left and my system head on the right:

    216176700_BothHeads-SystemonRight.png.fdf278305b66865e6395e145ebada4bf.png

    For some time, I have felt that it was time to get a more modern head. I have procrastinated because I dreaded the effort it would take to make a new head look like me.

    Obviously, it is crucially important to start with a head that has the potential to look like me.  I ask that knowledgeable people give me their recommendations as to which EvoX head is most capable of being made to look like me. I know that a new head won't be a perfect match, but, at least, I want people to be able to recognize me.

    Thanks to everyone who tries to help.

    Linden Lab really doesn't control the prices other residents can charge for their Mainland.  It's a free market and always has been.  That's not going to change.  Any land available on sailable water will ALWAYS be at a premium price.

    LL does control the amount of land with particular characteristics; if they wanted to, they could make a lot more waterfront land on sailable water. If they did, prices for such land would fall.

    ...declaring that another persons work no longer belongs to them and is instead public property.

    Actually, it is generally accepted that content should enter the public domain eventually. (The earliest version of Mickey Mouse will fall into the public domain in 2023.) All the disagreement is about when and under what circumstances, and practically no one holds that copyright should be for all of eternity. Until the 18th Century, there was no copyright. It is an invented concept that was introduced to incentivize creation because that was seen as a social good. The correct amount and duration of protection is whatever produces the most good, in terms of quantity and quality of content. It is not plausible that extending protection after the creator has stopped selling, supporting, developing, or doing anything else with content incentivizes creation. At that point, the creator loses nothing if the content becomes accessible to all to do with as they please.

    It is interesting that the SL permission system has permanent restrictions on what users may do with content even though RL restrictions are not permanent. Perhaps restrictive permissions should expire after some interval, e.g., ten years. Certainly, they should expire after the account that created the item is closed.

    The benefit would be to the owner of the intellectual property in as much as nobody is stealing their property and distributing it without their consent.

    The notion that anyone other than the creator/owner of a piece of content should be entitled to a copy of that content simply because the original owner isn't around to protect their intellectual property seems like an excellent way to persuade the few remaining SL creators to delete their inventories and quit SL en masse.

    What benefit could the absent owner possibly gain? They are no longer here. Their products are no longer for sale. What do they gain by having the products unavailable? The RL analogy would be that after a person's death, they still owned their possessions, and no one else could use them.

  12. 2 hours ago, Wulfie Reanimator said:

    We generally don't hand out a dead person's stuff to everyone, either.

    On the contrary, IRL, if a person has a will, their possessions go the the named heirs; if not, they go to relatives who are entitled to inherit under the law, if any can be identified. If no heirs can be located, their possessions go to the state for the benefit of all the state's residents.

    The SL equivalent would be their passing their possessions to one or more persons of their choice, or, if they hadn't, their possessions going to LL, which could release them to benefit SL residents in general.

    Which brings a new thought to mind: Should we be able to have heirs in SL? Something like the "Pay-on-Death" designation that one can have on a financial account IRL? An account could designate (perhaps for a fee) another account to receive its inventory if it closed for any reason. It would be fair to override "No-Transfer" in this instance because its legitimate purpose is to prevent use by more than one account at a time.

    Seems a bit weird if LL would start distributing my stuff because I'm not responding to customers (possibly because I don't want to, or care to).

    It seems to me that a closed account is more significant than just not responding. If the account is closed, there is no way for anyone (who doesn't have RL contact information) to communicate with the owner. Anyway, if the owner's account is closed, what could be the benefit to anyone of continuing to restrict use of the content they created?

    Could be wrong but what I am seeing is that the L$ Transaction history is for inworld purchases. I'd have to wonder if the Lab and Tilia wouldn't be keeping a long term record of those in the event of hacking, fraudulent or money laundering activities but just not making them available to residents. Maybe a question for the Web group.

    There are surely backups that will be kept indefinitely even if all the data aren't online.

    Ya, i remember that it used to be 30 days for everyone.. It just seems kind of silly to have that  as a perk rather than just user base wide. I mean if someone is generating money  in the gird they should have the same options for record keeping as anyone else that gets a 1099.

    You can download your US dollar (or whatever currency you use) account statements from the beginning of your SL. I just looked at mine from January 2007. You mention 1099, so I suspect you are thinking of US income taxes and the records needed to compute income and document income and expenses. US dollar transactions are the only relevant ones for that.  Dollars out minus dollars in equals income.

  16. Welcome! I am an old SL lady, and I still love it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

    I would love to help you. If you need help, message me inworld.

    My best advice is to not spend a lot of money too soon on avatar upgrades before you understand what is available and how it is used.

  17. I can only speculate. However, I suspect that your big problem is that people can't/don't find you. I frequently find a new store that has been there for years that I didn't know about. I'm sure there are thousands of stores in SL selling content that I'd be interested in that I haven't discovered yet.

    Have you done anything to make your store and products known, like frequently advertise specials in the groups that exist for that purpose? Or tried to get it into the Destination Guide? Etc.

    It is unlikely that people will find you unless you make the effort to help them, and then it's still iffy.

    Good luck.

    Yup. Intellectual property rights don't vanish just because you have the bad luck to die or go on an extended vacation.

    I don't know what the law is, but it seems like a bad system when the owner of the rights to content is unavailable, e.g., account no longer exists, because there is no pathway for another person to obtain additional rights, ever. No matter how much one might be willing to offer for rights to use the content in a manner that's beneficial to the community, there is no one to offer it to. A better system would be to require owners to make themselves reasonably easily available for communications in order to retain rights.

    ETA: Sorry. I didn't notice the age of the thread.

  19. Having thought a bit more about it, I think it was mean-spirited to suddenly close the store without releasing her content to the public. She said she's leaving SL. If so, and the decision is permanent, it would cost her nothing to give her content away. Even if she changed her mind later, it would cost her nothing because content that is selling so poorly  that the business isn't even worth selling will be worth essentially nothing at some future time when SL has moved on. The effort required would be minimal---ask for volunteers to distribute it among her store group members, and give each volunteer a copy., requesting them to freely distribute it to others.

  20. My alt was able to teleport to the accessible corner of the sim, cam in to the redelivery terminal, and get redelivery of all his Slink products last night. I tried to TP there today and could not, and my alt couldn't, either, so redeliveries must be  done.

    I do not think Siddean Munro had an obligation to do anything. She would have been within her rights to delete the store with no notice at all. That said, it's hard for me to imagine her being in a situation that allowed her to post a lengthy announcement and converse with group members that wouldn't allow her to give a couple of weeks' notice. After all, all she would personally have had to do is authorize and empower someone else to take care of things. If she had really wanted to do something nice for her customers, she could have made all her products free or set the prices to L$1 or L$10, or had an agent do it. Frankly, I wonder, since she had no more use for her SL content, why she didn't. It would have cost her nothing and would have made her a legend in SL.

    Hi everyone, hope you are all well.

    Have finally decided to go for a mesh head but I would like to keep my face as I like it as it is.

    I have the latest Maitreya Lara body but still have the original system head and I am assuming the skin also so my question is:

    Is there any way to get the mesh head but still keep my original facial features?

    Thanks in advance - Sam

    Something I found helpful when trying to make my mesh face match my system face was to rez two identical pose stands, put an alt wearing my shape on one, get on the other myself wearing my new mesh head, and place both pose stands at exactly the same coordinates, after which I tweaked shape sliders for many hours.
