  1. It's a definite go for me.

I pay L$0.25 per square meter per week to rent tier, so 2,048 is worth L$512 per week, L$26,624 per year, $106.50 per year.

L$650 per week equals L$33,800 per year, equals $135.20 per year.

    $106.50 + $135.20 = $241.70 per year.

    $249.00 - $241.70 =  $8.30.

Sure, I'd gladly pay $8.30 per year just to have 140 groups and nothing else, but I'll probably save more than $8.30 a year in texture upload fees, so I'll probably make money on it.

  2. I don't know how useful this will be to the OP, but it's easy to make asymmetrical arm tattoos for Maitreya because, despite supporting BOM, tattoo layers can still be used, and parts of a layer can be selectively hidden. The selection of what part is hidden is even sticky, so it only has to be done once. To make asymmetrical arm tattoos, you just wear two tattoo layers, one with the tattoo on the left arm and the right arm hidden and another with the tattoo on the right arm and the left arm hidden.

I have never understood why some (Maybe all other?) mash body makers stopped supporting layers when they started supporting BOM. Even though we have BOM, we can do cool things with layers, like this. another one is make a translucent avatar. there may be others I don't know about.

And as Lindal explained, some prepaid cards work for some people some of the time. Innula correctly described what the general problem is.

The system will break down if the credit card doesn't know how to verify your account.  Why wouldn't it know?  Because some prepaid cards are just dumb cash boxes; they give out money but they aren't set up to receive it in case you are due a refund.  In fact, the verification process is testing exactly that capability.  It involves making a very small transaction to be sure that the sender and receiver can both transfer money.  Dumb cards fail the test. SOME prepaid cards are smart enough to pass it, but not all.

The cards I used were reloadable, so they had to know how to accept payments. perhaps that's why they worked.

The problem is there are no shortage of public "explorer" friendly locations in SL, the vast majority of builds and homes are wide open for anyone to come and go as they please, especially when there is no-one home. It's easy to roam privately owned mainland for hours on end and not have a single problem, the whole of Belli is "explorer" friendly to all, and lets not even mention the thousands of public access private regions & estates .

That is absolutely correct. Nestled among all those friendly places are a few unfriendly ones with orbs that will transport people home. not just off the parcel, with very little or no delay, and people have no warning until they are actually in the danger zone that they never would have entered had they known it was there.

Can an orb be made that sends warnings to people who are approaching on a course that will cross the forbidden parcel so they know about the issue before they enter it? If so, the TOS should be changed to make the warning mandatory.

  5. Almost all of my experience with security orbs has been getting shot down while flying over Zindra.

Reading messages in this thread has caused me to think of them in a different context. Many times over the years, I have noticed that I had a new neighbor and that they were home. I have walked over to their front door and said, "/me knocks on the door," mimicing what I would do IRL.

I suppose, lest they have a security orb set to zero delay, that I need to be sure to stand in the road and not enter their land to "knock on the door."

  6. I confess to not having read all the posts that precede mine, but I did see a few things I wanted to comment on.

It's amusing the OP appears to be complaining about a warning while "exploring" INSIDE someone else's house.

Why is it amusing? Many people, of which I am one, welcome people exploring their houses. Since I can be in SL only a small fraction of the time, it seems wasteful to have no one enjoying it the rest of the time. It makes me happy for others to enjoy it, and I don't understand people who want to keep visitors out.

The system can't tell the difference between someone "exploring" mainland by flight or a vehicle, and someone "exploring" your house and messing with your stuff.

I am puzzled. How can they mess with my stuff in SL? Sure, IRL I lock my doors and have an alarm, but there people can indeed damage my stuff. In SL, the worst they can do is leave some unwanted objects that it will take me a few seconds to return. It's worth spending a few seconds occasionally doing that to have many nice people share my enjoyment.

Well, yes it would be nice but not everyone in SL is nice or cares about anything outside of their SL.

    Exactly!

It's this kind of overkill that makes me not want to associate with most people in SL.

I wouldn't say most, but I wouldn't care to associate with anyone who would set a security orb to less than 20 seconds. Even if I react as fast as I can, it will usually take me several seconds to leave. They primarily affect me while flying, and the owners are people who place skyboxes at low altitudes. Also, there should be a special place in avatar hell for people who configure their orbs to add intruders to the parcel ban list because that makes it impossible to fly over the land at any altitude.

  7. The blunt answer to the OP's question is: The only absoulute protection is to rent only from LL, .i.e., whether mainland, Bellesaria, another Linden home, or a private island. Even that isn't foolproof; LL could abruptly cease operations immediately after your monthly payment.

The numerous people who have advised picking a landlord with a long record and a good reputation are correct, but that isn't foolproof, either. Companies can run into unforeseen problems. Proprietors can die unexpectedly, leaving chaos.

My main reason for posting is that I want to describe the excellent experience I have had with an alternate approach. I have been renting tier, not land, from Ninjaland Rentals, aka Elanthius Flagstaff, since 2009. My experience could not have been better. Once, in 2013, I forgot to pay. I was traveling with no device that could run a viewer when I received the email saying that my rent was overdue, so I could not logon to SL to pay. I replied to the email, describing my situation and was allowed to pay after I returned home a week or so later. I pay L$0.25 per square meter per week. At many levels of mainland ownership, there is a significant saving compared to what it would cost to pay LL directly. The way it works is that you make your land group-owned, and a representative joins your group and donates tier. They have earned my trust, and I keep my rent paid up 6 months in advance in case a prolonged illness keeps me off SL. I could lose that if the proprietor dies or has a prolonged illness; that's a risk I'm willing to take.

...is it your responsibility to report that person to the authorities? Should Linden Lab be notified? Apologies if this is a stupid question or if this causes controversy.

With the exception of some specific circumstances, e.g., mandated reporters of suspected abuse, no one has a legal obligation to report a crime. That doesn't, of couse, mena that one shouldn't.

There's one possibility in which Linden Lab might possibly be able to intervene and that's if the player has payment info on file. Provided that the payment details are not stolen, the police can use those in order to identify and locate the person.

However I doubt that even the card provider would release any such info to the police unless an actual serious crime has already been committed - i.e. an actual murder and a body has been found.  And they still wouldn't know for sure that the payment details on file belong to the person who pulled the trigger. But it could be used as a line of investigation.

They would have the IP address unless the user is connecting via a VPN, and these days a lot of IP addresses are static.
