It's about changes to rules for child avatars. It's not really doom and gloom -- just a bit of hurt feelings or confusion (which I sort of get), and some triumphalism on the other side (which is unnecessary and unhelpful).

    And welcome back, Caer! 🙂

Ah, ok, thx Scylla. I have a lot of thoughts on that, but they vary a lot with context. Honestly, I am sure I am too ill-informed to really have anything worth saying on the topic. Also, I am quite sure that however I feel one way or another makes absolutely zero difference in whatever rules are implemented by LL either here or in SL. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hope you are doing well!

    Caer :)

  2. Thx @Roxy Couturier!

I have looked very closely, and I cannot see a neck seam between the Glam head skin and the Velour body skin. Looks really good!

Thx for the suggestions on the shopping events! How is a good way to know about those?

That is a great idea on the folder organization! If (when?) I find some Lara X clothes I like I will use that idea, thx!

I am glad the older shoes fit. I was worried about the shoes I bought for Lara 4.1 (which has the separate feet) fitting even the 5.3, but they work fine. Well, at least the one pair I have tried on so far lol.

    Thx again!

  3. Thx @Roxy Couturier!

Yes, I realize the 5.3 is in the same line at the 4.1, but the update is pretty substantial, IMO: the hands and feet are now part of the body, and the body will do BOM (someone told me to go to MISC in the HUD to enable BOM, and I was seriously confused b/c my 4.1 HUD did not have that, lol). Perhaps other things that I am forgetting. Anyhow, I have set everything up for 5.3 and BOM now, but I still need to go back and revise all my outfits to have the right stuff. What I really want is to be able to use the Lara X, because the shoulders are way better. However, so far I have not been able to find clothes for that shape. Then again, I have barely looked so far, perhaps I will find something after looking some more.

I never heard of Velour before, and then someone explained what it is in a random, serendipitous conversation. I had no idea that body makers had (as I was told anyhow) sort of settled on Velour as the skin standard. I am actually using a Velour body skin now, along with a Velour color in a Glam Affair head skin. Sure, money did I guess I not need to spend but like doing it better that way.

I did try a Velour head skin, but struggled to find something I like, but it had freckles. Based on my experience with demoing and then buying skin, I now realize that likely there is a version in the purchased folder for no freckles. I am happy with what I have though.

After demoing several EvoX heads and trying to modify them into something I liked, I finally got a LeLutka Avalon and pretty heavily modified it. Took a LOT of time, but then I did the same with my current head.

I love YS&YS, that is the skin I have on my existing avatar. I did demo an EvoX skin from there, of the same tone as my applier one. I liked it quite a lot, and may wind up buying it later, but for now got the head skin and body skin mentioned above. One interesting thing about the YS&YS skin was that there is only one skin for head and body.

I had not yet heard of Guapa and Pity Party, but someone I have known since I came to SL 17 years ago took me around to the others last night. I will check out Guapa and Pity Party tonight.

I picked up a LOT of make-up by Izzie's after demoing quite a lot, and even after buying my head and my head skin and looking at a several of the make-up tattoos that came with those. I would love to find more, but I seem to not be very successful at using MP. I will have another go, though, thx!

I appreciate all your advice, thanks again!

  4. I just upgraded from an older, applier-only mesh body (Lara 4.1) to the latest versions (Lara5.3/Lara X) and from an older, applier-only mesh head (LAQ Athena) to an EvoX head (LeLutka Avalon 3.1). I spent loads of time over the last couple days (up until 4AM one and until 6AM this morning!!!) figuring out how BOM works; looking at a lot of heads and spending time modifying a few to see if I could make them into something I like and a massive amount of time on the one I finally selected; and tracking down and demoing skins and understanding how skins that only apply to tattoo layers can work (blank skin does the job!); and finally tracking down and demoing make-up for EVoX heads. As always SL means everything is tedious and painful, but I enjoyed the process and love that I learned a whole new set of things (even though they have been around for a long time now lol). I also love how my avi looks now, extremely pleased with her!! Now if I can just figure out how to make her look older than 20; at least I did manage to make her not look 16 already, though lol (omg some of these heads and the head skin displays look like 14-year-olds, and many look 16!!!).

My next task is to look for clothes that actually fit the Lara X body so I can fully transition. Some people seem to say that all the new clothes fit only Lara X, but others say that the transition from classic Lara to Lara X is going very slowly. I grabbed a few Demos from stores at which I shopped last time I was in SL (2 - 3 years), and none of them had a Lara X version in the folder. That's fine, I can live with Lara, it's just that the shoulders and other areas they improved do make a big different, at least to me.

Finally, have gone around and checked out some clubs I used to frequent, most of which are still around. I have enjoyed hanging out and listening to some good music and dancing, and have had a couple of random conversations that have been good. So, so far enjoying this time around in SL.

I *would* be curious to know that the 'doom and gloom' is if someone wants to DM me? I just returned to the Forum, and noticed the 1200 reply thread on TOS, but I have no idea what that is about or if all the doom and gloom is related to that. I did also see something about Tilia being sold, which seems indicate things not going so well at LL, but I dunno.

YS&YS has an in-world store and they have skins for different heads and bodies. If you want to stick with them, they have Lara BOM skins which should work on both Lara and LaraX bodies. They also have head skins for Lelutka and other head makers.

As far as finding skins, I think we have a few threads in the past that have lists of current skin stores or go to seraphimSL and go to the shopping events which usually have several skin stores offering the latest products. The demos usually provide a store landmark to explore them in detail. These events are also a good place to find clothing stores too.

Thx Bree! I did go to YS&YS, and found the head skins, but will have to look a bit more for the body ones.

I will do a Forum search for skins. I also have used Pink Fuel in the past and they are still around, but seem to not have EvoX skins. Even the Skinnery seems to only have Evolution skins and not the EvoX ones, so would not have the UV mapping or whatever. I am poking about, will figure it out eventually lol.

    Thx for your help! :)

  6. Thx @Orwar!

I am digging into it all. Looks like my old skins (one for the head, one for the body) use appliers. My old skins came from a place called YS&YS; I have no idea what the hot places for skins are these days, YS&YS was recommended to me at the time, and I loved them. Unfortunately, as usual Marketplace still is not my friend. I narrowed down to Female Skins and there are like 70,000 entries. That is fine, I know there are a lot of models of each skin, the problem is that Relevance and Best Selling start off with skins with 1 review or no reviews.A Place search in Firestorm does not look promising either. Seems that SL stays the same in character if not in aesthetic. 😑

I still need to read the Skell BOM stuff again and watch the video. I am still confused; perhaps will make more sense when I have an actual BOM skin to try. Very confused whether now a single skin works for the head and the body, or still need separate ones. Lots to figure out yet.

Btw my plan is to stick with the Lara 5.3 for my primary use, but work on building an avi around the Lara X. I don't know that I really need this based on what I do in SL, but I find it interesting to learn new stuff and put together something new. I suck at that stuff, so it is painful, but I do get a sense of accomplishment with each part I 'conquer.'

    Thx again!!

  7. I have been out of SL for a bit, and am still wearing a v4.1 Maitreya Lara Body and an old LAQ head. Also, back when I first set these up I spent a lot of time tracking down info on how to use appliers and such, but I cannot recall if I used BOM. I think I did, but am not sure...

I see that the Lara body has now been updated to Lara X, and looks like the last version of the old Lara body was 5.3. I think I can upgrade to the 5.3 pretty easily, but the Lara X seems a different beast (double meaning intended). I have a couple concerns with the Lara X. The first is getting the Lara X to look the way I want, and the other is clothing.

I spent quite a lot of time over the years getting the proportions of my old Lara body the way I want it, using a non-Lara shape. When I put on the Lara X body, I do not see it; I am assuming it has to do with the old shape? Beyond that issue, which perhaps can be fixed, I worry that I will not be able to get the Lara X to look like my old shape. I have all the settings for the old shape in a spreadsheet, but I don't know if they would be even close in the Lara X.

The other issues is clothes. My understanding is that my old Lara clothes will not work on the Lara X, which sucks in itself. Worse, I grabbed a couple demos from vendors I like and they do not have a Lara X version, only Lara. Perhaps the ones I picked were just outliers? Do most clothes these days have a Lara X version?

My biggest concern is my head. I do not even know who the 'hot' vendor is these days. Seems like LeLutka? Also, looks like heads have moved to an EvoX model? I wonder if any of the make-up I have will work with those. Finding a new head I like is a problem, too; back when I got my current head I gathered quite a lot of demo heads and worked with several of them trying to get a look I wanted. I really only found one, and none of the current heads at LeLutka look promising. Even though I found CATWA heads unappealing in the past, I looked there, too, and again, not promising. What other head brands should I look at?

Finally, is there some website or something that describes how to use the latest tech? I guess progress is good, or I would not be considering updating my avatar, but wow, steep learning curve and lots of time invested in finding acceptable bodies and heads and then adjusting them. And that is not to even mention things like skins and make-up (I assume my current hairs will work with a new head, but I have no idea).

I appreciate any suggestions anyone has! Thx!

    lol, no, Caer.

When you post, you contribute substantive thoughts and ideas.

The person to whom I am referring does not: he vomits forth whatever he thinks will garner the noisiest and most annoyed response. Which is why I am breaking my own rule, and "subtweeting" him here rather than responding directly. He's not even worth the time and effort it would take to respond with an eyeroll emoji.

I may not be that person but honestly I am pretty crunchy about SL. I do try to avoid that and just interact with posts that are more about bigger social or intellectual topics, but I know I let some of my feeling about Sl creep in. And I am an oldie (joined somewhere ~2006 or 2007 i think) and also other than one brief period 2 -3 years ago have not been in SL for a really long time.

If nothing else there is a lesson in there for me, I think. And weirdly, although I follow you and one other person, I have my notifications set to not email me, yet I got an email notice on that specific post. Existence trying to tell me something?

Here we go with Enforcing Viewer Login MFA

I thought you meant Master of Fine Art lol.

I do not mind using 2FA (two-factor authorization), but I prefer to chose *where* I use it. SL would totally NOT be one of those places, though it does meet my criterion of 'an app/site where someone could steal my money if they stole my account.'

I'm too poor to shop in RL, but playing in SL did inspire me to get an expensive Alienware computer, then cause me to need a new battery and keyboard for it.

Being able to have plenty of virtual stuff makes me feel like I don't need much RL stuff.

Same. I bought my first gaming computer in the mid aughts in an attempt to make SL work better, and have maintained one ever since. I stopped using SL but got into digital photography and found that gaming computers worked really well for that, also.

My first gaming computer was also Alienware!! I kept the same system for over 15 years, but upgraded the CPU and water cooler, motherboard, memory, graphics card, hard drive to SSD as time went on. I finally replaced that system earlier this year with another Alienware, and I love it. Since have upgraded the memory from 16 GB to 32 GB.

I also got a pretty nice set of headphones, as my main thing was going to clubs and listening to music. More recently I upgrades those to a *really* decent set, and bought a nice DAC/amp to go with them. That was mostly due to Apple adding Classical Music to their Music service, but SL got me thinking about nice audio in the first place, I think.

So while SL did not lead me to buying clothes IRL, I have spent quite a lot on electronics either directly or indirectly because of SL. I might have gotten into the more powerful computers and better audio without SL eventually, but SL did trigger my purchases in the first place.

But exactly what do you mean by it?

    A couple choices:

    1) The people saying it sound like "incels" for saying it (saying the things is bad)

    2) The things being said are what "incels" believe and say (the things being said are not true)

The answer to the first depends; I cannot recall if the person who posted the list put it forth as views with which they agreed, or if they just posted it as an example of things that someone thinks men believe about women. I was talking specifically about that list, though, I did not comment on the poster themselves.

And wrt to second, yes, absolutely.

I checked the thread, and you brought up the word first, followed by another.

Darn! (I thought it was someone else, sorry.)

I already commented on my post, and I still stand by my assessment of that list. You or anyone else may disagree with that assessment (after all it is opinion to a large degree, but here is another word you will dislike, misogyny, and I see that in the list too) but it looks pure incel to me.

Perhaps. Missing is the fact the first person who brought it up, was conflating everything (not sure if they were trying to blow up the thread, or are just not knowing the history and normal usage of the term.)

who would that be? 'cause I am wondering if you are referring to my post about that list. which I stand by. I was not talking about the thread, and I for sure was not trying to get it locked, I was just commenting on that list, esp since it seemed to held up as what were the unreasonable goals of women, which *is* the topic of this thread, if I understand it correcty

if you mean something else, I apologize, sorry...

Incel literally stands for "involuntarily celibate", right? How is that not "men who have problems finding a partner"?

For sure I will regret this, but:

The term was started by a girl, and was sort of despair. It was picked up by poorly-socialized guys who felt they were owed attention and sex by pretty girls. I don't know if these guys even tried to form a relationship with just average, ordinary girls. Most do seem to have attitudes and relationship skills that would make it unlikely most girls with good emotional and mental health would even talk to them though.

Of course they don't read profiles.

Before I switched to a female avatar I had a male one; slim with long hair. I got endless come-ons from men who thought I was a woman. Even when I had a beard. They weren't even looking at my face either. And they totally failed to notice the lack of boobs. It got so frequent that I put "I am not a girl!" as the very first thing in my profile, and I even had it as a tag over my head most of the time (spoiler - they didn't read that either). Honestly I think the only thing they actually looked at was my hair.

    I'm sorry. Very frustrating.

I guess the only way to get around it would be to put one of those old school tags over your head stating your gender and sexual orientation; for me: LESBIAN!! NOT INTERESTED IN GUYS!!!

Probably a lot of them would take that as a challenge though. Ugh
