  1. While I am not aware of an active Scuba diving group, maybe ask in the communities around Blake Sea if they have a hint for you? Like, the sailing clubs, or the SL Coast Guard? I could imagine that they know active groups. Good luck!

Thanks to those who recommended this location. I picked up some land there yesterday. It's a fantastic place to make a home. Very unique area. I enjoyed exploring the neighbourhood, using the provided horses and cable cars. I am always thrilled to see people who are devoted to the mainland.

Welcome, new neighbour 😊 If you didn't yet, join the Campbell Coast group, too, so you can stay informed about upcoming events.

On topic: I was exploring the Snowlands the other day and stumbled over a residential community that is currently still a WIP. LL road leads just between it. Approximate opening is in March. I wanted to know more about it in case it was interesting for one of my upcoming Mainland Tours. I will meet up in a few days with the owner so once I know more, I will drop info here. I spotted so far residential homes, shops/stores, activity sites for families like a kids playground, and so on. Looks like a town, very promising so far.

You will definitely need a tour to see Campbell Coast. I tp'd to a yellow lot on the map that was for sale. Apparently it had already been taken. I left quickly since the new owners had set up an orb. Trying to escape before being tp'd, I flew through many properties. While looking for somewhere to land, I accumulated numerous orb warnings when one of the orbs finally caught up to me. I was tp'd to someplace. Guess what? That lot tp'd me home!    LOL!

It takes some time until the map updates. Now for orbs at Campbell Coast, I am only aware of 2 lots so far that use one, and they are actually owned by individual residents. If I was to decide, I would forbid banlines and security orbs on all Mainland in general because it is a nightmare when you want to travel. The majority of people I saw and met exploring Mainland, are usually very friendly and polite, and would never intrude a building or place that is obviously private. And if not obvious enough, they would check in the About land description. The ones who are intruding, are a redundant number, to my experience. So I can't really see the need for it. But that's my personal opinion 😉

Concerning a tour at Campbell Coast, I will actually repeat the previous one very soon, I am currently figuring out a day/time with the owners.

  4. Ladies and Gentlemen, I have some exciting news for you about the upcoming Mainland Tour: LCDR Coralie Foggarty, Commanding Officer of District 3 where the Second Life Coast Guard Station of Byron Bay (our start/meeting location) is situated, just came back to me and announced that they will not only be on location to give us a little introduction about their project but will also have a little surprise ready.

    I heard rumours, it might include a 🛥️ and/or a 🚁

You better don't miss this, and be there on time! B|

What I am curious to know is how much of a pain in the arsenal is it to rig the same piece of clothing for 3+ bodies? Creators, can you shed some light on this?

Roughly said, it depends on the complexity of the item, the quality of dev kits, the number of bodies/variations (e.g. original, petite, flat) and of course, personal skill. From what I have seen and heard from other creators so far, rigging alone can vary between a few hours to 2 days. However, you actually have to count in all the preparation for rigging as well, such as retopology. Plus all the tests to make sure that everything fits fine, and hopefully no technical issue comes in your way :D Thumbs of rule, I would say, the average for a not too simple item is round about one working week if you create from scratch and consider everything else (I don't want to write a novel about all details ^^). Which leads to my next point.

Keeping the amount of work in mind if you want to offer high-quality, unique creations, and looking at such kind of statistics, as a creator you would always also ask yourself: where is the money? (Please read on before you gasp ;)) You consider various factors. A statistic like here is very helpful as one of your decision-making aids but you would also count in such factors like: can continuous customer service and product updates be expected for a considerable amount of time?; is the personal creation style actually matching this or that body?; is the body available at low cost/for free, or at a reasonable price? The conclusions you would make are for example: if a body has no support, it will be a nine day wonder only; if your style doesn't match, you will most likely fail to offer a decent product; if people pay hardly anything or nothing for a mesh body, they are probably not planning to invest a lot more into their overall appearance. Which is totally fine as well! But everything has its pros and cons, and I guess we can easily see a clash between contradictory expectations from (potential) customers vs. creators.

Once again back to "Where is the money?" Let's also keep in mind that while creating in and for SL is "just for fun" for a few; for many, it is also their (sometimes only) source of income. If you take creating for SL as a serious job, you have even some more costs to consider because no one will ever pay you what it's worth it for the time invested into improving skills, updating soft-/hardware, purchasing license subscriptions and so on. With all that in mind, I guess you can say: it's complicated with those mesh bodies :D

  6. I will use this thread to announce my upcoming tours -- until I myself or participants lack of time, or lose interest. 😆

    General Information about the tours

The tours will be hosted on or around (=connected to) Mainland, preferrably once a month. They are supposed to be family-friendly, so everyone is welcome.

Usually, I will try to combine (part of) my tours with one or more activities such as sailing, flying, driving, horseback riding, or similar. Which means that the tours will include a few sim crossings, therefore it is highly recommended to prepare a low lag appearance (e.g. low complexity/scripts amount) to avoid getting stuck too easily in sim borders 😁

Prior to the tour, a HUD with the flyer, a notecard with additional hints for the current tour, and the landmark to the starting point will be provided. After the tour, this HUD will be updated with the landmarks to all visited sites, and any interesting additional information so you can explore again, and find out more on your own.
In the next days, I will set up a little office where you can come by to grab the HUDs: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Erazor/56/7/65

If you can't make it in time, you are welcome to send a TP request to join the tour at a later point.

If anyone would like to join this project as a host, or make suggestions, please feel free to drop a message here, or contact me in-world.

A lot of people asked about the tour at Campbell Coast. In collaboration with @BJoyful, I am currently figuring out an additional second tour date/time. So those who couldn't attend before, can hopefully join this time. Stay tuned, information about it will be posted in this thread as soon as possible!

Sailor's Cove is not official Mainland, however, it is part of the Mainland history when Linden Lab developed the Community Partnership Program which resulted in various sailing communities being connected with water sims to the Mainland continent Nautilus. We will be visiting the Rainforest in the south of Sailor's Cove to explore various sites.

    Meeting Time & Location
    Saturday, February 20, 9:00am SLT
SL Coast Guard Station @ Byron Bay
    SURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Byron Bay/128/188/22

    Requirements
None, but you can optionally prepare swimwear/Swim AO and/or snorkeling/scuba diving gear. Hints for free/cheap options are provided through the HUD.

It is absolutely the same, they are like in mainland on "protected land" check the worild map while you are there and you see that you are anyway connected with the "classic" mainland. Not in a private sim. For me is the best solution for community living not in private sims. I don't like the community in mainland because you never know someone around what can do over there if they buy a plot close to the community.

I understand why you would see it as Mainland but @AlettaMondragonis actually right. It is Linden Homes, and defined as that in the Covenant. Bellisseria is, if I am not mistaken, the only Linden Homes part though that has been connected to Mainland so far.

  8. I suggest Campbell Coast, too. I joined that community by accident about half a year ago because a friend of mine spotted an abandoned parcel in a corner close to the sea there. Long story short, we quickly became friends with our neighbours, and even bought more land from the community.

My Pros for this community are:

    • overall very friendly and supportive people (they would also help you with landscaping/homes; not everyone can afford the nice things)
    • calm neighbourhood yet very active community, not just in their own but also in close collaboration with their neighbours, for example: Artist Village with Q&A evenings/parties, or Fishing Contests/Travelling Tours (by boat, plane, horse, etc)/Parties hosted by the team of Eulennest/Pier 7 (2 very beautiful locations)
    • many activities possible around the area, either alone or with friends&family, for example: riding/driving (horse/vespa rezzers), flying (hanging glider rezzer), exploring (they have a hidden castle, and a cableway), meditating/relaxing (for example at the Stonehenge area), playing (there is a garden with a functional chess game), sailing, and many more. If residents want to host their own event, you could always reach out to the owners and ask if you may use an area for it, usually at no cost (it really is all about the community there)
    • access to everything you may want to use if it comes to vehicles: airport, road, sea. For those who live close to the water, they would also always make sure that you have access/waterway to the sea.

    The Cons:

    • your friendlist might grow quickly
    • you can hardly catch up to attend all the activities they offer/visit (they like to tell about interesting events outside of Campbell Coast as well. The other day, I spotted some of them at the Bay City Mole Day Party)
    • you might feel guilty if you don't follow to match the landscaping on your parcel ;(

I actually hold a tour at Campbell Coast just about 3 weeks ago. @BJoyfulactually planned to hold a repeat of that tour, maybe she has a date/time for it already so you could join it to get an idea about the place.

  9. I strongly agree with @PixieGirrrrl: shared experiences are the easiest way. There are many communities around the grid. Arts&Culture, Fashion&Bloggers, Clubs, various activities (e.g. sailing) and so on. I myself am also a person who doesn't want to be on other people's friendlist right away just because we met one time at the same event, or were hanging out and goofing around for 1 hour once. For me, that is not a base for a friendship yet. Apart from that experience which I made too often, that people would add you and never ever talk to you again. Or worse, only "abuse" you anymore for their teleport offers so they can invite you to their DJ sets, or similar occasions. That feels very unpersonal, and I don't want to be just another name on a huge business contact list.

Throughout the years, I noticed that other people feel and tend to act the same. So my additional suggestion is to be patient and give people the space and time they need to get to know you (and don't feel guilty if you expect the same favour in return!). Think of it like joining a sports team in RL where you meet regularly with your teammates but don't necessarily become best buddies over night. Friendships usually need to build up and grow. On a sidenote I may add that from my own experience, if people don't rush into finding new friends in SL, you may happen to find longtime friends on whom you could even count in RL. Good luck 🙂

  10. Sisters In SL is a group of ladies that want to meet like-minded women around the grid for visiting events, exploring sims, meeting for discussions, going on shopping tours, forming friendships and so on. I will host my 2nd "Mainland Tour" for the group -- but every other lady is welcome to join as well! (I am sorry, guys, but this event is not meant for you this time. Same as we ladies wouldn't be meant to drop by at your meetings in a gentlemen only club 😉)
My "Mainland Tour" project is meant to (re-)discover the beautiful sites on mainland, and find out about interesting projects and communities. This time, we will explore Campbell Coast.

Campbell Coast is a community in a rural scottish coastal setting, spanning over a handful mainland sims along the coast and some mountain parts with direct access to the ocean, and from there to Blake Sea and other spots on the continent. Activities and events are held high in this community, and so you have not only the option to ride a horse or fly with a hanging glider as you explore the landscape but you can also join their events which are offered regularly by its residents (for example, Q&A evenings with music at their Artist Village, or sailing trips around the continent). We will make a tour around this whole area where I will show you the gems and hidden spots to get an overall idea of the place, so you can also come back at a later time to explore more, or even surprise your friends&family with a little weekend trip to a beautiful spot on mainland.
