  1. You mean you are glad we dont have the CMO of Wal-Mart, one of the most successful stores in history and still making tons of money? The same company that is credited for the decline of K-Mart of whom LL's new CMO was in charge of advertising. The same CMO of K-Mart between 1999 and 2004 during the period K-Mart couldn't turn itself around to a profit and declared bankruptcy in 2003 of whom other than a 10month stint as head B2B (business to business) marketer in Bloomberg has not had any CMO or marketing role since? Also, if his LinkedIn profile is correct then he has actually been working with LL since December 2021. Haven't seen to much interesting things marketing wise for 6 months... _________________________ As a CMO he is also completely missing the point of Second Life (like many Lindens) and where it sits in the current metaverse trend. Especially when he quotes stupid things like "he's also targeting content creators who develop and sell virtual goods on Second Life. Developers are a big part of driving users to a platform and building an economy. Roblox executives often proclaim the importance of their growing developer community during earnings calls". It just shows he has no experience in such things for the future of SL. Anyone can read those Roblox earning calls and sure their developer community earns a lot but this new CMO has failed to understand that it is users that are more important to Second Life, not developers and that is why Roblox said developers are important to them. We have plenty of developers already with one of the largest user content creation libraries. SL needs users more than developers and whilst developers are important, Second Life offers no incentive for them to come as the platform is simply not up to par with other content creation platforms like Roblox and Epic and cant offer what the masses or this new CMO want. That is what he doesn't understand, it is the quality and quantity of what is on offer with Roblox that makes them a success and draws in users. Something SL cant compete with in its current form. Based on those Roblox earning calls it shows a user to developer ratio of 150:1 (in lowest terms 150million/month users to 1million developers). Roblox has expanded because it offers quality entertainment, easy onboarding, social dynamics and is fun to users for a demographic that is more sociable in such virtual environments than SL's demographic with very little cost to users. Second Life offers very little of that and so most user doesn't stick around. That is what needs fixing in SL primarily quality, onboarding and onboarding cost for the user. Without that no amount of marketing is going to help. Lastly, this little gem shows he has no previous knowledge of Second Life's B2B history. "Feuling is also using his experience as an ad exec at Dentsu, Kmart, and Bloomberg to help brands understand how they can build virtual events in Second Life and sell branded digital goods, like sneakers that can be worn by avatars." That ship sailed a long time ago and I highly doubt his marketing expertise can convince the plethora of RL companies and brands to even consider coming back to SL. For a small list of previous companies that bailed on SL long ago you can go here: New World Notes: Tateru's Mixed Reality Directory (blogs.com) Taking his "sneakers that can be worn by avatars" suggestion, where is he planning on getting these companies from? Adidas, American Apparel, Best Buy, Calvin Klein, Reebok, etc. They have already been there done that in SL and wont come back. The same for many many other items such as phones, drinks, clothing, furniture, electronics, etc. Most jumped ship to Avakin Life on Android where they actually make money as opposed to loosing it with SL's high cost. Worst still, many entertainment brands that make Roblox and Fortnite the forefront of the metaverse with things like live music etc have equally left Second Life never to return as it cant offer what the competition can now. Companies such as Warner Bros Music, Universal Music Group, Sony (responsible for many live events in Fortnite), Phoenix Film & TV, NBC, MTV, etc. It would have been different if LL upgraded SL over there years to stop these companies leaving or actually employed a CMO prior to now. Plain and simply this new CMO has not done his homework on Second Life and it shows BADLY.
  2. I stand corrected then, the public doesn't know what the metaverse is then. Ah yes, Wikipedia. There is a reason why Wikipedia isn't allowed as a source for university papers and that is because it is in most cases wrong. Those two newspaper articles that whichever Wikipedia editor used as a source say no such thing. The first article makes no mention of Second Life being a metaverse, simply Rosedale saying he hoped Second Life would become the Metaverse (snowcrash) which it never did. The article even concludes: "What happens after that will determine whether Rosedale winds up becoming a tech trivia question, or the builder of the Metaverse." Take note also that snowcrash which was the first definition (and what is used today as the definition) of the metaverse defines the metaverse as needing VR headsets to be a metaverse as that is what snowcrash was all about. A VR successor to the internet. The second 'source' equally does not show that it is the metaverse. Simply, that being what Second Life users and the journalist incorrectly describe it as. It even states: "Second Life, then, is much like Roblox - a place where users build environments and invite others to play - although it has far fewer participants". Even a link from the BBC on that very article defining the metaverse does not define second life as anything like it, stating even that it is only an idea at the moment: "But because it's still just an idea...". The wiki editor even doesn't know what the metaverse is who seems to believe it has something to do with having an avatar and social media aspects of which, any game has had since 2000 if not earlier. I mean, come on, the wiki article even says that World of Warcraft is part of the metaverse just because some esports guy said "playing a game and going on raids with friends is the metaverse". Such a suggestion would imply any game with the ability to create or use an avatar and play with friends while chatting with them is the metaverse.
  3. Second Life is not the metaverse and any suggestion that it is means you do not understand the definition of the metaverse. Calling Second Life the metaverse is akin to saying google is the internet. It is a singular aspect of a metaverse just like google is a singular aspect of the internet. The metaVERSE is like the uniVERSE where multiple worlds exist and are connected within that VERSE. As it stands, Second Life is a virtual world with the potential to BECOME the metaverse due to it also being a creation platform however to do so, would mean massive changes in not only Second Life's coding but also LL's vision which quite frankly they dont seem to have anymore. Second Life has always been and still is a closed and very limited platform that goes against what the metaverse that Epic, Facebook, Microsoft etc are defining the metaverse as. The metaverse is a combination of multiple virtual worlds within itself connected not necessarily on one server cluster. This is why, as animats has posted in his summary in the OP, Sweeny states "connected ideal, where every company can participate". What they are proposing at the moment is a limited system as like Sweeny Stated of metaverse, "it’s monstrously complicated" so will take time. If Mark Kingdon the ex CEO of LL, over a decade ago, managed to get his vision of companies being able to host their own unique part of second life and still have it all connected as one whole connected 'streamable' platform (aka a METAVERSE) then SL could claim being the first. Unfortunately, no one believed in his vision (and also technical limitations vs budget) and therefore LL stopped that vision of which was their last, in my opinion, great idea that could have had the same impact on the digital trends that Second Life's release had in 2003. I have mentioned this a few years ago in one of my posts as part of an ideas thread of what Second Life should become and how it could become better long before facebook or epic were looking into the metaverse. It feel on deaf ears though with the usual negative nancy's that dwell around here saying that no one will ever want that. The premise of what was said in my years old post was basically exactly what Sweeny said "connected ideal, where every company can participate". For example where a business can create their own virtual world within the second life creation platform that allows for transferability of both avatar, inventory and cash through all worlds within that metaverse no matter where they are hosted. For example, you can have a business meeting in a virtual office with suit and tie and then teleport to another virtual area where you can play WoW created by Blizzard within Second Life and the avatar automatically changes etc. Now, can Second Life be a singular platform of multiple large scale and small scale spaces like what Epic et all are suggesting today as the metaverse? Of course and it is the closest thing we have at the moment. However, Second Lifes limitations in not only scalability, code, editability and inworld creation, not to mention is lack of VR and AR support which is also tied to the Metaverse (as defined now) means that it is A LOT of work to become that, of which would take to much time and effort for a staff of 200 of which only 20 or so are actual developers.
  4. I was talking about both the space race and recent history hence my spacex comment. Recent history being that NASA stopped their shuttle program in 2011 and since then have used Russian rockets/engines exclusively but started using Russian rockets in the Atlas 3 built in 2000. But you are correct, I should have clarified that in my post.
  5. That is what happened though. Russia did win the space race. America just moved the goal posts because they were loosing so bad to make it look like they won. Out of all the innovations that happened during the space race, only Russia's innovations proved helpful to mankind. They put the satellite in space (1957), first spacecraft on the moon in 1959, the first animal, man and women in space and completed the first space walk and orbit of the earth. The rockets NASA used until recently were even all Russian made. It is only recently that NASA through SpaceX has been able to use American made rockets and they are privately owned. But of course, as Americans say, America won the space race as they put a man on the moon...πŸ™„
  6. If you are using Edge Browser the add new credit card page from Tilia doesn't load, only can use Paypal which uses its own login system not Tilia's. So will have to use chrome browser or firefox to enter credit card details.
  7. Yeah, neither did I until I saw how few things were listed and wondered why so started to find out. It must be something new as I can remember seeing lots more pages last year. I have and quite regularly. Like I mentioned keywords dont show up the right things at all - with some not even adding them. Yes it is bad for creators sales not to put the right keywords or categories but also bad for SL as a whole as it means users never see them. For example, I was editing a new furry avatar for myself and needed to find hair that suited its design. Furry heads are hard to find hair for due to the muzzle interfering and the head size usually being harder to get to work with rigged mesh hair (hence why many furries still use sculpty hair). To find one (I really wanted mesh but went after so long for sculpty) you cant just search for a style as people name the hair things like Varsity or after names of people like Dustan. This means that you have to wade through over a 100 pages.
  8. Thanks for that link Coffee. The website I used to use for games like this disappeared last year with the whole flash removal from the interwebs. Can download some fun short games to play again.
  9. And while they are at it making a new marketplace, make it so that it is similar to Caspervend where a creator can link a vendor to their marketplace store and have all the deliveries, redeliveries and uploading of listings managed through the marketplace website. Would reduce script usage in SL vendors, would allow for a streamlined delivery system that is sorely needed in world and would give incentive for people to actually have both especially if the offer a discount to MP fees if you have an inworld store as well.
  10. Oh wow, a shooting gallery. Of course! that is a sure fire way of working out whether hit registration works and evidence that no one uses weapons... LMAO actually thinking I meant Second Life avatar bots in the term you are thinking of and not the gaming term of a person botting being a bot. Also the payout wasn't reduced it was capped per day and per week. The update to Linden Reams was in 2020 when they shut it down for so long that people were wondering if it was going to open again. That is recent not some years ago. I go there regularly and dont get chased by a single monster. On the contrary I collected gems for quests handed them in and got my lindens. As I said, how about actually leaving your rental area and go to Linden Realms and other places. You will find that they DID update it away from a monster chase game. ETA As to saying people wouldn't play if there was no pay-out. Well of course not as the game is specifically designed completely around that system. If it was a zombie chase game with weapons, people would go there just for that without money payouts needed.
  11. Now you are changing the goal posts (even though I never did). You specifically said LL has never put in game functions and when I post evidence otherwise you say blah, blah it is not used. You need to get out more and not stay in your little sim world. Gor sims rely on bows and arrows as part of their raids. The reason why the rezbullet isn't used anymore is specifically due to LL not updating it. I have guns and swords and bows that I use regularly in world at RP areas as do many people. If they didnt exist or aren't used then why is the a constant stream of new guns and weapons being made and sold on MP? LL last updated Linden Realms a couple of years ago Major rework of it and redesign). As to Linden Realms, it is always populated and they reduced the payout from them due to botting. Nothing to do with lack of uptake. LMAO ok....
  12. Odd, why is there a health function in Second Life if LL didn't put in game functions? A health function that when you see a heart on the viewer and if the avatar takes enough damage they 'die' and are teleported back to their home position aka spawn point. The same system that you state in your previous post doesn't exist and shouldn't exist in Second Life. I'll quote you: "There is no "knock on benefit" to having security orbs "teleport home" as if you have died in battle, and now you are returned to your "home base" or "spawn point" (the game function from which that pernicious orb feature was drawn)." That quote right there is laughable as that very function does exist in Second Life as I explained. Here is the wiki page for it: Death - Second Life Wiki For goodness sake there is even specific LSL commands such as LlGetAgentHealth or LlRezBullet which is only there for gaming functions such as FPS or RPG. But if that wasn't enough you then embarrass yourself again in this latest post in suggesting LL not only dont have such functions in the viewer but even suggested that linden Lab haven't even put in the games people want into Second Life. Why if Linden Lab has never put in a game does Linden Realm Exist? Paleo Quest? etc. They sure look like games and game functions to me. Yes you can RP with just a piece of paper. Do you know what that is called? A Table Top GAME or Role Playing Game. It is where modern digital RPG's come from. I beg to differ as does the entire RP community that uses swords, guns, bows, cars and arrows etc in Second Life as part of RP. Places like Gor, Fantasy, urban, car racing, etc. All of those RP communities certainly wish that LL would invest in more game like functions or improve on the technical failures such as physics for car racing or better weapon controls, damage and bullet/arrow hit registration. What you cant seem to grasp is that no one is saying LL should turn Second Life into a game. What people are saying is that they should provide users the ability to make a game in SL better than we can now.
  13. True and agree to keep it simple, right keywords and categories, however the capping to 105 pages is the first I have seen any website or marketplace do on the web. If you go to any marketplace on the web, all results are visible no matter the number of pages. Personally, I think it is a bad idea to cap search results and believe LL would be better off spending their effort in more meaningful MP improvements. I mean lets be honest, even their categories on MP are not the best. Why the need for Avatar Accessories, components and appearance? From memory one of those Avatar categories was phased out but LL couldn't be bothered sorting the items from that category into the others so they just left it. Then you have hair. Rather than keeping the main category 'hair' as just a header category with no items allowed and then use the subcategories of Short, Long, etc. They have the subcategories as well as the main categories as listable. So what happens? Out of the 240,000+ hair items for sale on marketplace only 1/8th of those listings are in the subcategories meaning that the majority never show. MP is a mess, has been for years.
  14. Firstly, what does Rome have to do with the Olympics? Secondly, Rome was built in a day - they decided to create Rome and Rome was there. It's empire however wasn't, which is where the saying comes from. Second Life is 19 years old and has more than enough foundation to finally move forward. Second Life is built, the games should come. There is a reason why the gaming industry is worth $250 billion and a reason why the entertainment industry is worth $720 billion. It isn't because they waited 19 years to think ok we have built a console or have built a movie theatre now its time to make a game or a movie. Entertainment is what drives people to come back and SL has lost its entertainment value. Additionally, games in Rome were the lifeblood of the city and without those games Rome wouldn't have lasted 1229 years let alone 1 year. It was fundamental to their culture and also to the rise of the Roman Empire. Without those games, Rome wouldn't have kept the public focused on their empire. Without those games, Rome wouldn't have had the money to develop its empire. Without those games, Rome wouldn't have become as popular and as big as it was. Likewise: Without those games, Second Life can't keep the public focused on its Empire. Without those games, Second Life cant get the money and investment to develop its Empire. Without those games, Second Life cant become popular or as big as is should be. RP is a major draw for Second Life. The majority of its users are RP'ers (even adult). RP is a game but restricted due to not being able to develop those games hence the RP'ers are leaving. Look we get it Prokofy, you dont like games and want SL to stay as it should. The thing you need to accept though is you are not the only person under the sun.
  15. These 'take a survey to earn lindens' have been in SL since 2006 when the media got a hold of SL and the hype years began. They offer little lindens with no guarantee of non-malicious intent. Some well known survey places in Second Life way back sold your info to other marketing companies and also had malicious code on the sites that you took the surveys on. So whilst yes they are legit you get lindens for doing a survey and you wont get banned, you have to keep in mind that you do so at your own risk.
  16. The problem is, what does LL determine to be clutter? Also as per my edit I found the reason why it seems like there is so little on the marketplace now. Its because they have capped the max viewable to only 10,080 items or 105 pages at a time. This means that no matter what happens some users items will never be displayed unless you know their store name or they have placed the correct keywords. As I mentioned in my edit there are 64,943 female skins listed but only 10080 are ever shown. To take this further with regards to keywords. Of those 64,943 female skins only 1600 show up when the search parameter is 'white'. I highly doubt there are only 1600 white skin toned female skins on MP. Even if the keywords are correct, I would dare say that there would be over 10080 'white' female skins on MP which means even with correct keywords creators are going to not have their listing show.
  17. The problem is that it is near impossible to find stores these days in world as there is no directory or malls for them to be found easily. When the MP started and business's jumped ship to MP and abandoned their in world stores everything shifted and the MP became the directory. This has continued today whereby people search marketplace first, find the item and then go in world to view the item. Unless some form of inworld shop directory is made or massive malls come back (they wont) then not only will creators suffer but you will also get posts like the OP asking where the stores are gone. You have to know the stores name or you get no-where in inworld search and even if you do it's like playing pin the tail on the donkey hoping the search listing is correct. I am with @bigmoe Whitfield and am not going to go hunting stores especially with the terrible new inworld search. I have tried to do that for the past three days with a friend that joined and they in the end just gave up and couldn't bother hopping around anymore especially when even inworld search shows there is supposed to be a store, tp there and then find yourself falling from the sky as the shop has closed or moved with no new landmark given. Meaning having to then tell the new user if that happens you then have to go to the search listing, click the user name and go to their profile and hope they have a land mark in the pics or description. That said, in my searches with this friend over the past few days, even I have noticed that MP listings have reduced a lot. :ETA: It also doesn't help that for some reason LL have (by the looks recently - at least I can remember it being 200+ pages when I searched last year) capped the search pages of marketplace to 105 meaning if you search for something general or go to a category for a look (with no search parameters) you only get a max of 105 pages of items despite their being over 300+ pages for that search. For example, there is at current post 64,950 female skins listed when you go to Avatar Components>Avatar Skins>Female Skins (scrap that just dropped by 7 :P). This would mean that at 96 listings per page there should be over 667 total pages of items for that category. Instead there are 105 only meaning 10,080 items are only EVER shown without very specific searches or filters. I feel sorry for those creators that are getting dropped off without realising it.
  18. My intent was for it to be updated as a alternative for LSL. Whilst I do realise its original intent was for mono, I believe it should at least be looked at as a viable option to upgrade it as a replacement for LSL. As far as script memory limits, with the current hardware on offer since Babbage was working on it I think it should be feasible. Limitations can easily be put on things to provide control such as script limitations on avatars etc. For example, there already exists a no run script (script entry) on regions that region owners can toggle that allow for only sim scripts to run blocking avatar scripts from running when they tp in. Such a system can easily be replicated and modified to also allow only objects picked up in the sim by an avatar to run, such as a gun, hud etc. For example make it so that if an experience is available on the region, that experience makes use of temporary attachments and through the experience only those attachments to an avatar can run. Of course this would also mean that the viewer would need to have an inbuilt AO manager like firestorm so that it doesn't interfere with AO huds. It is also not for just to compete for gamer acceptance, that is a side product. The change would also be for future proofing and retention. As it stands now there is a learning curve to have to learn a new scripting language. Whilst it is easy enough to learn LSL for a scripter it is still a hinderance as any creator who wishes to create that is new to SL must consider if it is worth learning a new language that is solely dedicated to one platform, used no where else and has very limited functions. This is also the prime reason why Epic removed their custom scripting language from Unreal Engine in place of standard scripting languages many years ago, as for one it was to much to upkeep time wise and money wise (like LSL) and for the second, it was a hinderance for creators who learnt one language and had to learn another for a specific program. When it is all said and done Second Life is a content creation platform like Unreal. The difference being that in second life you can 'run' the programme created as well.
  19. The sad thing is that, if LL played their cards right they could have come to the forefront of all of these new metaverses. To be honest (maybe I am being optimistic), if they move speedily and make relevant and right decisions as far as avatars (better customisable default avatars), scripting (more scripting or better yet restart Babbage Linden's C+ scripting replacement of LSL), viewer (update to vulcan, cache and inworld creation tools to match competitors) and reduce the over all cost of tier dramatically within the next 2 years they could still beat out all other metaverses which are looking to come online in the next 5 years. As it stands, Second Life is still the most customisable virtual world out there as far as avatars go. You can be literally anything and still have a high form of reality to the avatar even if playing a robot or furry or a stick man with a top hat. No virtual world beats SL in this regard however other virtual worlds do beat second life in world building and inworld tools. If LL can start doing some major changes in the right direction quickly it may give competitors that get billions of dollars in funding a run for their money.
  20. It isn't the complexity of the avatars that are the issue, it's the manner in which they are governed and used. Modern metaverse's run on two avatar systems - a default dressable avatar system and a costume like system. The former is akin to Second Lifes default avatar, with full character customisation options and the latter akin to an all in one package and pre dressed with limited customisation/dressing options. Linden Lab's removal of the default avatar as the focus avatar has meant that it has become impossible to reign in or build auotfit and/or other tools because there are too many different 'default like' avatars around all with their own shape, builds, creators, etc. In modern metaverses the avatars we use now would be considered costume avatars with clothes made for them selective and the majority of the clothes made for a default avatar. Second Life is the reverse where the default avatar is selective and the 'costume' avatars the majority. This decision (and refusal to believe its users that mesh would be used as such and update the default body on mesh release) by LL has meant that they have had to reinvent the wheel on many things, wasting development time and money in doing things that they shouldn't have had to. The prime example being BoM. The system already existed for the default avatar however, due to the lack of use of the default mesh body, they had to make BoM compatible with creator mesh bodies. If LL had made the default body to a high quality mesh standard and as customisable as possible then those 'fixes' companies like Roblox can implement easily LL could do so as well. That lag you get from to many avatars would be reduced etc as now the render engine has to render multiple different mesh objects that are identical in style yet made slightly differently due to one person wearing the same shirt on two different bodies but with a default avatar it would render it once for everyone. Think about what the avatar creation system in Second Life would be like if the default avatar was just as realistic as the mesh bodies we have now, yet offered far more customisation than mesh bodies do now. For example, the default avatar system could have been made to allow for both human, animal and mechanical bodies. Click a button and you can switch from human shape to furry shape to all manner of shapes with each having sliders to create whatever shape you needed. They could have added tail options, wing options etc. It would have meant that clothing, accessories, shapes, skins, hair, piercings, etc, all for one main body, no new user confusion (better retention) as to what clothes fit what body, no extra stress on creators to have to make clothes for 5 different bodies or loose business etc. All of that with still all the creativeness still available today and easier management/fixes for LL.
  21. This is the reason why the SL Wiki should be updated as it would provide us older residents with links to convince such people and help them. The knowledgebase that Strawberry discusses as a relevant help area is not good enough. It doesn't even have a comprehensive list of proper troubleshooting for the viewer. The Knowledgebase troubleshooting area is filled with things that will not help anyone with viewer issues or even general Second Life things. It says a lot about the state of Linden Lab's support that, when people ask for troubleshooting various default viewer issues that people post links to firestorms wiki, a TPV. Not Linden Lab's knowledgebase or Linden Lab's wiki - a Third Party Viewer help wiki. Haha. I agree. The main issue with this is, that single last minute interruption is enough for the video on YouTube to be demonetarised and banned should it be reported as it could be deemed as showing not only adult content, but given the avatars size potential far more damaging consequences given it is on Second Life's official channel. If I wasn't a fan of Second Life, I would have already reported it for adult content. And then you have people wondering why Second Life is banned on Twitch...
  22. Wow thought they had stopped that rumour. Forgot about that one. Made me laugh the first time I heard it. Would have thought after so many years it would be something people dont say anymore.
  23. Whilst I would agree with you in that the advanced menu is generally safe to use which is why I stated in brackets that it is not to bad, the developer menu should not in any way be fiddled with by a new or beginner user as it will just cause more misery to a new user if they click the wrong thing. Also as Coffee said, the debug menu of which is accessed through the advanced menu can brick the viewer if something is misclicked and a new user or even a beginner user has no place fiddling in their let alone LL actually recommending a person to freely access an area where that is located as a fix to reduce lag. As to developer menu, whilst yes there are some cases where an option in the developer menu can help in troubleshooting, there is nothing generally in the developer menu that will help with lag at all which was the reason Strawberry stated it should be toggled, so why even suggest opening it to a new user in a "basics of the viewer' tutorial? I still remember the days when people were telling others that clicking on use plugin read thread in the advanced menu reduces lag.
  24. There is a vast difference between showcasing a realistic impression and completely gimping your advertising/tutorials to new users. This 'basics of the viewer' is clearly aimed at new users, no one denies that. The trouble is, it is showcasing the negativity to a new user from the start not to mention millions of potential users seeing it on YouTube. In what business universe does a company show off that their viewer/program crashes due to some unknown reason - likely because it cant handle its own programming to TP out of a stressed server? Yes sure it happens, but it puts forward the wrong impression. Likewise talking about derendering avatars. I just cant agree that the video was worth it let alone a tutorial - sorry Strawberry criticism needs to be harsh sometimes. Some points to take note of: For 20 years LL, TPV creators and all those people that have been around for years, the one thing they have always said to new users is either NEVER or as a last resort use the Advanced (not to bad) and Develop (um no?) menu as the wrong click can cause issues. Yet here we have a Linden saying to tick both and freely start unticking things... SL is laggy - as a basic tutorial on increasing performance what does Strawberry Linden tell users to do first to reduce lag? Does she first go to preferences and change the graphic quality (number one step) in any technical help on graphics? No. Does she tell people to lower the draw distance as a first or second step? No. Does she go to shadows (a prime reason for lag in SL - keep in mind she is on ultra) and tell them to turn them down or off? No. Does she tell them to turn water to opaque due to LL in ability to have water not render under objects? No. Does she tell users to reduce the Max number of non-avatar imposters? No. Does she tell users to reduce the Max avatar complexity? No. Does she tell them to to untick render attached lights (face lights)? No. Does she tell them to close the chat window floater she has up to get 5-10FPS? No. etc., etc. No. She goes straight to the advanced menu and tells them to completely derender all avatars INCLUDING a users own avatar. Second Life is advertised as a social platform where a person can create their own avatar to look at and meet (see) other people, but who cares about that! Just tell all those excited new users that the best way to stop lag in a place where there are ACTUAL people is to GET RID of the number one reason people play Second Life. πŸ™„ Great advertising. I'm sure that new user is bound to spend all that money in SL buying clothes, skins, animations etc (supporting creators) for their avatar when Lindens are just telling them in tutorials the first step to reduce lag is to derender all avatars to see those nice clothes. Here's a basic tutorial for new users on how to do things. "You can change your environment settings here, but dont worry we will cover that in another video". Then WHY even mention it. Here is our support page where it has lots of good articles on how to do things, but sorry a lot of it is outdated due to the speed on which things are updated in Second Life. Linden Lab updating things speedily?. Lets see Knowledge base article - How to improve viewer performance... Make sure to update to the latest Windows 8.1 as our statistics show that users crash less often on a 9 year old end of life operating system! Geez, no wonder I crash a lot, I'm using too newer an OS being on windows 10! Never mind though, LL are so busy updating they dont have time to change an 8 to 10 on their knowledge base according to Strawberry Linden. As you say though, "Setting a realistic impression with things as they are now, is more important". The realistic impression a new user gets with this tutorial is, why am I going to play this when I am told I have to derender the number 1 reason for playing to reduce lag, experiences crashes or support a company that doesnt have the staff to quickly keep upto date critical help infrastructure etc. That is the impression this tutorial gives, well to me at least. Ill end with this which should say it all about the professionalism of this tutorial. Second Life is known for adult content, here's a tutorial for you...
  25. I'm sorry, but I must be the only person that doesn't seem to see any point in these video tutorials. What is the point of making video's explaining what the guide book and destination guides are when these are discussed on noob island in the tutorial (or at least should be)? Are you (LL) that unconfident in your already provided 'new' inworld tutorial system that you need to make a video tutorial as well discussing identical things when no new person to SL would even know these video's exist and would have decided if they like SL from the inworld tutorial? Seems unproductive and counter intuitive to me. Why isn't time being spent in updating the viewer instead to utilise better tutorials, hover tips etc? No new user is going to sit and watch a 34 minute tutorial for that long on random unspecific and unhelpful things. Hell even I didn't. I am sorry it was a boring tutorial. That is why video tutorials are specific and short. Why does Second Life need to be different to every other program out there? It's help system doesn't need to be unique. Do you see Microsoft or Autodesk (just as complex if not more so programs) creating half hour long tutorials to upload to Youtube? No. They have their help wiki up to date and have the videos on there specific to the help topic the user searches for. Second Life's wiki hasn't been updated in a decade. Refer below pics on what SHOULD be in the viewer. Hover on the button for a short time and it gives the one line description shown here under curtain grid. Hover longer and the hover tip expands and shows a short but relevant gif tutorial and better description. Press F1 whilst the hover tip is active and it goes directly to the help wiki shown in the second image below. Its not rocket science. The wheel doesn't need to be re-invented. Make the tutorials relevant, quickly accessible, informative and short. Make them in viewer with links to an updated help wiki.
