sorry if i post it again but i cant find my old message for some reason. Not sure where it went.

Anyway... today i saw somebody on my land, standing there for about 1-2 minutes, and not responding to my IMs.

I have seen that person before, on several other places of SL too thats why i remember her name. She just stands there for a minute, looking around and then leaving.

Could that be a stalker? And what can i do about it?

Not sure if she is after me, or somebody else though...

There's a website that measures the performance of various regions and issues reports and to gather information that have a couple of "bots" (non-human-controlled avatars) that show up in regions. I found one hovering over my land and I had similar questions until I went to their website on unrelated business and the avatar name sounded familiar. There are a variety of "bots" that do similar things.

It would be hard for someone to know where your land is unless its in public search or you have put a tp or information about it in your profile or they got it from one of your friends. Perhaps they have a landmark to a place that was there before you.   It could very well be that they were AFK or busy when you IM'd too.  A drop in once or twice doesn't bother me unless I have reason to suspect that they are there spying or stalking.

Its a good practice to always go to a public place when you create a profile pick and not mention the name of the sim  Random profile surfing is a sport for some people and they will sometimes TP to places in your profile picks or map to the sim out of curiosity or boredom.

You always have the option to eject and ban someone you feel uncomfortable with that is on your land, use ban lines, use a security system or move if these options are not allowed under the covenant.

Check your visitor list daily to see if there is a pattern.  If you don't have a security system that creates these lists, there are  scripts available for free that you can put in any modifiable object that will record who is around. They are called VIsitor List Maker's and are available in the script library and in may free scripts places.

If you really are concerned, and you discover a pattern or have reason to suspect someone , you can always AR the person, as stalking is a violation of TOS.

I live on the mainland so I get lots of random visitors and I kind of like that random interaction, if you prefer not to be bothered by stangers just get yourself a security system which will allow you to ban indivduals or non-group members, you can set them in various ways.  Likely it was a random explorer so I wouldn't get too upset if I were you

On my old sim I had the land available to the public. Nearly every day I would get at least one avatar tp in, turn in circles in regular intervals and then tp out. These avatars would never respond to my IMs and most of them had little to nothing in their profiles. I don't remember the full names but one that I saw frequently had the first name "Adele". I was pretty sure they were bots due to the regular intervals that they would turn... Though what their purpose was is beyond me. Highly unlikely it's a stalker. I wouldn't think it would be much fun as a stalker to just appear and disappear. A stalker would probably play with you. Another possibility is if the land you are on used to be commercial and people are ending up there by using old LMs.

This.

SOmetimes I don't even see them for a few hours, and sometimes I'll be looking in my chat log and see a name there that I don't recall having spoken to me at that time... which is really frustrating... but it happens.

Plus people TP about all the time for all sorts of reasons.

Some people just like to explore. I have managed to run into the same person more than once "out there."

Some folks are not very communicative (thankfull many others are).

Some folks are not very communicative 'at that time' for one reason or another.

As for profile picks - if you want visitors, use your land and say so. But if you don't want visitors then yeah, use a public place. But these days the things people used to put in profile picks now have feeds, longer profile descriptions, and the searchable interests for much the same purpose.

On my first lot I used to get naked guys showing up, and then it turned into naked guys being chased by women in leather with whips... Finally found out from a neighbor that I'd bought land that used to belong to a 'club' before it moved in advance of the then not yet active adult land policy.

But, if there's empyt land near you - there are also tiny empires bots that use unowned land to 'hide in reserve' for whatever that game uses them for. And some traffic bot companies might hide their bots in a like manner (though I'm only aware of one such company left in business).

This doesn't sound very stalkerish. It sounds more like someone has an old LM, or perhaps used to know someone there. Or perhaps once had home set on a neighbouring property which has changed hands, and now gets booted next door by an orb when logging in? Or random exploring- that happens pretty often where I live. There's lots of non scarey reasons. I'd worry only if they were following you all day, listening to your local chat, or actively being abusive.

Also there are lots of quite normal reasons why they don't respond. Perhaps they log in, then go make coffee while they rez. Or are shy. Or are really surfing the Marketplace while standing there. I find if I go and say hello to people on my land, they most likely just tp off with no answer. Some people are just not into socialising.

If they are causing problems, you can ban them from your land. You can ban everyone if you really want, but then you never know what nice things you'll miss by doing that :)

A stalker would show up other places where you are and try to contact you at some point. Sounds like some sort of bot to me. It also might possibly just be someone who doesn't own or rent land in SL and likes to log in and out somewhere pretty, or pretty empty (lag free) whichever the case might be.

I amuse myself at times by reading the visitor list for my SL home. Some are regulars. Hope they find the sofa comfy!

I always liked to keep my land open, but yea, you get some strange things sometimes, lol. I doubt it's a stalker. More likely a vagrant or someone looking for a quiet place to park an alt. If I start to think someone might be up to mischief or nosing around, I just put the land setting on group only for 2 or 3 days until I'm satisfied they have moved on then open it back up.

I do enjoy the random passerby and since I like to explore around myself I appreciate the butt pain it is running into banlines every 10 feet when there's no real reason for it. I've actually made my ground level people friendly with a grove of trees and cuddle campfire and even a huntable wolf for those with the right hud and weaponry. I don't advertise it but it's there for anyone that happens to be passing through. As long as you don't show up in my house uninvited or try to take up permanent residence, it's cool.
