I don't know about the US, but in the UK, these people wrote the book, and it's a very long and complex one, with serious civil and criminal penalties for businesses that don't comply.

Particularly interesting, and frightening, is the article linked to in one of the responses that points to the use of cryptocurrencies to conceal illegal activities, such as sex trafficking.
