don't downgrade from Premium to Basic until the day before the end date of your current subscription.  This way you can continue to own a mainland until the last day.  When we  downgrade, then we can no longer own mainland from the downgrade date, no matter how many days are remaining on the subscription

You also need to give up your land the month BEFORE your membership expires (there is a date for the land tier in your website account info).  Tier is charged on the month before.  Yes, best to keep renting unless you want to move into an older Linden Home  -- which is free. The new ones are too but difficult to get. THEN you don't have to worry about past tier.

If you wish to keep owning Mainland, you can "sell" your plot to a private group, owned by yourself and an alt of yours. A group can contribute the needed amount of tier to keep your Mainland plot. There are some services where you can rent that needed tier, as if you were paying "rent" in L$. Usually, those services will pick one of their accounts to join your land group and contribute the rented tier (you can make a plain group rule with nothing but contribution rights for that account). As long as there is enough contributed tier in the group's tier pool, you're fine. Been doing that for years now...

If you're renting on a private estate ... well, it'll be business as usual.

@Humana58,

A key point that you might have missed:  Your Premium membership renews AUTOMATICALLY at the end of your subscription period.  Since there are NO "four month" subscriptions, I'm assuming that yours is an annual subscription with a renewal date four months in the future.  If you do not take action to downgrade to Basic by the end of that period, you will be charged $99.00 USD and your membership will renew for another year.

At any time, you may change your membership plan.  There are monthly, quarterly (3 months) and annual plans.  The annual plan is the lowest cost per month, but with any of the plans, a cancellation will not get you a refund of any unused time.

At any time while you are a Premium member, you may either get a free Linden Home on up to 1024 square meters of land, or you may buy a Mainland parcel of up to 1,024 sq. m.  You will not be charged a monthly tier fee as long as your total Mainland holdings are 1,024 sq. m. or less.  You may also, of course, buy more Mainland.  If so, you'll be charged a monthly tier fee in accordance with the Tier Table.

You may NOT downgrade from Premium to a Basic membership while you own Mainland, or donate tier to a group.  The system won't let you.  To downgrade, you'll have to first sell or abandon all your Mainland holdings, and remove any tier donations you've made to groups.
