You should only receive one if you friend a new person or if someone hands you a card instead of accepting friendship. You shouldn't ever get duplicates, so I'm a little surprised that you have gotten hundreds back. Frankly, though, I have almost never deleted a calling card in my 9 years here, and I don't have "thousands", so I can't say that I have ever run into this problem.
