you can respond to IM's that are sent to your e-mail if it's within a certain period of time (3 days?).

if you have an object inworld that reads e-mails, and know it's address, you can send e-mails to the object and have it send messages to others.

if you have a media stream set up on land or some other method viewable in SL, then you can send video, voice or web updates that way.

I think that's about it if you don't log in at all...

there are also text only clients in the Third Party Viewer Directory which allow you log on in a text only client (no graphics, limited commands)

Here is a list of ways to send messages to people in SL when you're not inworld.  Read through the list on this link:

http://www.vintfalken.com/not-in-second-life-and-still-talking-to-your-friends/

Here is "Second Messenger", a non-graphics text interface client:

One of the latest additions to the list for contacting people inworld when you're not in SL, is the Sparkle APP for iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.  Here are two links that show it in action.

SLim ended about a year ago, there was a thread here recently asking if there were plans to reinstate it and it seems the answer is no.

Other lightweight non-graphic clients such as Radgast are very good, allowing you to do more than just chat, in fact you can do just about everything apart from actually "see" the world. But for people that are at work or on work computers that can`t do downloads, phone aps are probably the best option.

What has worked for me is SLiteChat.  The free download can be found here:

http://www.m2osw.com/slitechat

Once you log on to SLiteChat, it will appear to your friends on your friends list that you are inworld.  You can send and receive messages from them.  You cannot fetch notecards or objects that have been delivered to you.  That must wait until you are inworld.  Also, any chat will not be recorded in your IM chat logs (if you keep any).

As a Lead Hostess and part of the Management Team for a formal Jazz Club, I often find it necessary to quickly log in and send a message to some of the staff. I, like Venus Petrov, also use SLiteChat and find it perfectly fine for me. Some of the settings will allow you to save your IM conversation history, local chat history, even timestamps, and it also has Google Translation thingy too, as well as an odd feature of being able to Telephort home. o.O

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. ~smiles~

This is a little dated but there are probably others with this question (me, for example) so....

You didn't specify if you need the recipient to receive the message inworld. If that is a requirement, you'll need to use one of the text-based browsers or chat clients, etc. But if you want to send them an emai, which is what they'll get anyhow if they're not online, you can do that.

1. Get their avatar key. You can do this by using a keyfinder script or by checking their profile with Firestorm.

2. Send an email to AvatarKey@secondlife.com, where "AvatarKey" is the actual key.

I just tested this by sending an email to myself and I received it moments later.
