I doubt that it is a neck issue. For me it looks like a shadow caused by the light settings which you are using. You could change the settings and look, if the shadow disappears.

Just to clarify. This? background picture = an image that serves as a visual background back drop = a self built setting or scenery and/or an inworld locatation Actually many definitions on web list all under the name backdrop. Background pictures as well.

I built hundreds of avatars with several mesh body brands, heads and BoM. All with complete system skins and they look nicely. Not only one I built with head/body tattoos. I don't say tattoos are bad. I just don't see a need to use them. It is not BOM that makes an avatar looking ugly. Main reason is a wrong shape. Mesh heads come usually with a shape that fits with skins of the same brand. You can still use other skins too, if you invest some time and work to edit the shape. As for vendor pictures. They are an help, when I look for a certain kind of avatars. But in general I use self-made shapes without exception. So my avatars don't look like the ones on the pictures anyway.

Bottom is the backdrop. I doubt that palms which such kind of leaf are to find in SL.

I remember the times. My dream was to buy a Hasselblad one day. I never did because later I wasn't so much interested in rl photography anymore. It's not the program itself that I don't like Photoshop. It is their business model to sell licenses which have to be renewed. Though when Photoshop was sold as program, I couldn't buy it because it was too expensive. lol I like the PortraitPro because its almost 100 % face related. There are some options to edit the entire picture. But only a few. And what's also good in my opinion is that the tabs and dropdown menus are easy to handle and to understand, when I compare it with Affinity and its very techical language for example.

I just purchased a program to edit portraits (faces). The name is PortraitPro. 50 Euros. Demo available. Well, it is meant to edit real life pictures. But seems it works good with avatar pictures also. The first picture is the original. The second is edited with PortraitPro. Almost every part of the face can be edited and the hair too. See screenshot. No, I'm not affiliated with them lol. I found it while surfing the web. It is try worth I think.

May I ask what graphic software you are using to achieve this painting-style effect?

I know this one. The Louvre in Paris reported it as stolen. Just kidding. An absolutely fantastic job.

Are they BoM compatible? I meant, are these classic skin or skin appliers? I see them the first time. They look really special. I found the shop on the market. Some are BoM. What about the group gifts? Are they BoM too? 12 for 500 sounds like a good offer.

I don't blame anyone. Perhaps Catwa didn't pay enough attention to this point. Question is, if the could forsee it at all.

That's part of the problem. Someone wrote this somewhere "I got 8 heads..." Seems very many logged in with each alt account that he/she has to get a head for it. With the result that other residents weren't able to get even a single one because the regions were permanently full. 6 regions means that max 600 avatars can enter. That's a bottle neck if perhaps 10,000 or more accounts want to buy a head. Especially when I consider that many customers didn't leave the regions and waited for the delivery at the place.

Good luck. If people tell you how horrible complicate BoM ist, don't believe them a word. Actually the basics are easy to learn.

Oh, classic heads can be very pretty. And if one uses BoM one doesn't need HUDs with fancy make up features.
