  1. This information is only needed for people who are using an actual, real firewall, better known as a router. Personal "firewalls", such as Windows Firewall, generally cause more problems than they solve, waste resources, and pester users with questions that they're typically not qualified to answer or care about in the first place. Besides, if you've allowed Second Life to run in the first place, the appropriate exceptions have already been added to Windows Firewall.
  2. So, do your parents know you're misusing their computer?
  3. First off, thanks for Googling first to ensure this hasn't been beaten like a dead horse already. Second, Imprudence.
  4. If consistency is what you're looking for, you might want to bite the bullet and get used to Firefox. The UI has consistently remained the same since it was called Netscape 3.
  5. Anyone got any ideas? Like I said it works fine on Firefox, but not Windows Explorer. Explorer isn't as standards compliant as it could be. Firefox is a lot closer. You have to code websites specifically for Internet Explorer, whereas if you code to the standards, you're going to be covered for most users. Doubly true if you test on a variety of screen aspect ratios and resolutions as well. For a company that already supports a vareity of platforms and is considering targeting more, it doesn't make sense to write around the peculiarities of one specific web browser that only has decent support and any following on one of those platforms. Especially if the way the browser handles the basics keeps changing each version.
  6. I wouldn't use Emerald on open grids, it has issues with OpenSimulator-based inventory servers that causes assets to get lost.
  7. Why not just get a laptop that doesn't have thermal issues to start with?
  8. even after uninstalling the av and firewall it still turns itself off every time i reboot the pc, I wonder what is causing this, it did not happen with Norton. I strongly suspect we're dealing with a compromised computer, hopefully you have a clean backup of your data. Have you considered reinstalling?
  9. Here's a one-liner to fix that. Don't go throwing away more money on Norton when you could be spending it on something actually worthwhile.
  10. I'm not saying "don't protect yourself." I'm saying, "Use proactive measures, don't expect retroactive measures and snake oil to do anything for you."
  11. So basically I had to install AVG antivirus along with with ZoneAlarm Firewall (I know, I know I'm a cheapo), because Norton had expired and I didn't want to pay my renewal because Norton sucks anyway. But now when I run SL my frame rates have dropped by half. Any idea how to fix this? TIA ZoneAlarm, along with every other personal firewall, is snake oil. Even if you have just one computer, go get yourself a home router: It's a better firewall than any personal firewall could be. If you must take a retro-active approach to security (rather than a pro-active one like not accepting files and software from non-trustworthy sources, and never doing anything as Administrator when it's not absolutely required), you can probably get away with not using the real-time protection and have it schedule a scan for a time when you're not using the computer.
  12. Needed new router as D-Link (old) wouldnt work with desktop pc. How so? Dedicated networking hardware is universal, which makes me think it's actually an issue with the desktop, not the DLink.
  13. You do not need to forward ports to connect to SL. If the old router worked, why replace it?
  14. Too general of a question. Both companies make GPUs that won't support SL, and both companies make GPUs that support SL quite well. Mind narrowing it down to a few final selections in your price range?
  15. You could sell your L$, which would then go to your US$ balance, keeping a token amount in L$ to pay for uploads.
  16. That's pretty much off-topic here, you want the Emerald forums.
  17. Technically not, since it is in fact a Debit card Visa That just means you're pre-paying as far as Visa is concerned. If you enter your pin, you're not using the Visa network, you're using an EFT network. irrigardless Not a word.
  18. Because you're asking them to do a chargeback. Even if they did it, your bank would probably still charge you for the chargeback, with most banks, that's a $50/transaction fee. Note that using a credit exchange like Visa or Mastercard isn't the same as an EFT on Star or Nexus...
  19. OpenGL on Windows is implemented as a compatibility layer on top of DirectX. You will never get the same OpenGL performance on Windows as you will on other platforms, it's simply not possible. Sure, it runs "just fine." But not "great."
  20. I'm curious what the case design and vent locations look like. It would be seriously stupid for Asus to build a machine that is going to run hot without adequate cooling.
  21. That's got some beef behind it, about the only thing I would change for maximum performance is the operating system. Windows OpenGL support is intentionally crippled to give DirectX an artificial advantage on that OS.
  22. Very few people have the same name as their father, so that's just not gonna work.
  23. It could also have to do with LL's shortsightedness in the variety of kinds and types of age authentication items in various countries. While a US ssn, driver's license, etc. are all well and good (and seem, to work), I have a Canadian friend who just can't get the stupid thing to recognize her driver's license and she's older than I am! C'mon, Canada's right THERE, LL, it's not like it's far from CA (where you're based). Heh, couple things wrong with what you just said there... California's about a day's drive or train trip (longer if you fly thanks to security theater) from Canada (and Californians don't tend to get out much). SSN isn't a form of ID that is legal for use outside tax purposes (and indeed the Lindens don't ask for it). Passports, not driver's licenses, are the accepted form of ID when dealing across international boundaries. Try going to a bar in BC with an Oregon driver's license as proof of age...they'll ask for your passport instead. Anyway, she eventually was verified through some other means, but as far as places putting specific restrictions on ID because a minor can get hold of a debit/credit card number? That's not the reason. Credit card companies prohibit the use of credit card information as "proof of age," not because minors can get ahold of their parents cards, but because credit card companies don't check age: I applied for one from US Bank, in person, without a parent, when I was 14, and got it. This isn't a Linden rule, it's a "if you want to continue accepting our credit cards, you can't use them for these purposes" rule. You do like being able to buy Linden dollars with a credit card instead of mailing a check, right?
  24. I wasn't confused before, but Torley confused the issue for me... I have to wonder if he's confusing payment info with age or adult verification there based on other documents I've seen in the KB...
  25. Actually, I'm fairly certain you can only teleport to Zindra if you are age verified. Credit cards are not a form of age verification, and cannot be used for that purpose (yes, some porno sites do it, but this is a legally questionable and completely useless as minors can and do get issued debit cards). Perhaps you are age verified but do not have payment info on file? Many stores require payment info on file to enter as a way to reduce fraud.
