Ok, globally blocked access to Facebook on my computer by re-routing all calls to Facebook to localhost. This doesn't prevent others from "liking" you, but at least Zuckerboy don't get any infos about what I do anymore!

When do you understand that it's NOT about credit card stuff, but your PERSONAL DATA, your PERSONAL PREFERENCES of all kind and various different things about your and your personality. This data is far more valueable than credit card data that will be useless after one time use. Companies like Facebook use your privata data, sell it to all kind of companies and make money with it - depending on how much data you entered about LOTS of money.
And it doesn't stop here. Human resources manager in companies already google your name and look up your profile in Facebook et. al. This can be become a boomerang for you if, let's say, he finds out your a fan of an anarchy group if you apply for a job in a bank! Linking SL profiles and this whole "Like" thing puts yourself at an uncalculated risk. One reason I will NEVER EVER join Facebook or other social networks. I don't care if they are hip and everyone is in it nor would I ever link my SL account to it if I would have a social network account.
BTW: Stop whining about what Shockwave said. I don't want to discuss as this was against the TOS, but as you registered with Facebook, you have no privacy. As Mr. Facebook himself, Mark Zuckerberg said himself, privacy is irrelevant today! So get used to it everybody can do everything with what you post on Facebook. You can already prepare yourself for the day Facebook WILL hand out your contact data to any software developer that's creating software for Facebook - it's revoked temporarily only...
-
Regardless of the reason they are yet another software developer that no longer supports Mac OSX 10.4, so again I say maybe it's time to upgrade.
Indeed - but the operating system! Seriously, if Steve "No!" Jobs isn't willing to fix stuff for his over-priced stuff, it might be worth considering changing operating systems.
-
Oh you convinced me! I will instantly sign up for Twitter and Facebook, link it to my SL account and post status updates every minute! Of course I will only post really important stuff like
- Ok, going to toilet...
- Awwwww need to press hard...
- Success! It's big and brown...
and other stuff people really wanna know about. Wouldn't that be great? You see, I finally got the concept of all this social network stuff! YAY!
BTW: Did anybody notice that you now can even set a status to your SL blog profile?

LL, just give us options, okay?
I really would appreciate that with EVERY so called "improvement" LL is trying to push down resident's throats. Only because some business clerk thinks he MIGHT have a good idea, it doesn't mean everyone likes it. And even worse, there isn't any form of evaluation done about the acceptence of a feature. No, just blog entries saying "Post your thoughts on Twitter!"... I mean, why should I go and sign up for a social web thing that I personally think it's absolute useless and that most definitely nobody of LL will ever read, only to express my opinion when LL already has a so called "forum" or this comment feature here? That's just rediculous - plain dumb said!

Well, considering that even Phoenix has stopped supporting Mac OSX 10.4 it's not really that surprising in my book. Looks like it's time to upgrade.
Phoenix has stopped support for OSX 10.4 because the GCC compiler has some errors and thus resulting broken graphics issues!

Hm... really not sure, if I am a fan of this webbased profiles.
when I open a profile, where can I see now, if someone is online or not?????
That's easy! You can see it on Facebook once all profile stuff is replaced with Facebook crap!
-
I don't wanna be liked on Zuckerboy's "I p*ss myself because I make lots money with all your private data" Fakebook crap! Get that stupid "Like" button out of my profile NOW!

Blue Mars throws in the towel, admits defeat:

Concentrate on Apple's iOS? Will be the next fail. Everyone's using Android now - except people that like to pay lots of money to get patronized by Steve "Mr. Arbitrary Decisions" Jobs. So they should focus on an Android version, not iOS!

And lastly, Facebook, My Space Et all. Never been there. Couldn't care less about them. Twitter? why would anyone care that Joe is eating a sandwich and watching football ATM? Why would I want to go to Twiter to see that Joe's avatar is dancing at club Somewhere and he is eating a sandwich?
I personally don't want anything to do with all that facebook and twitter stuff either, probably cos i do not have the need to share unimportant insignificant stuff to the whole world all the time. I wont go further then the occasional forum/blog post
Still, all those social media sites are very popular. So if LL thinks they can bring in fresh residents by promoting and linking to those sites then I am all for it. As long they do not make it mandatory to join those sites and do not bother me with those sites.
Well, wouldn't it be nice to read on Twitter you are AFK because you are sitting on the toilet? And then read if you've been successful or not?
Anyway, I thought this Viewer 2 thingy with all the Facebook and Twitter bling bling was aimed at those social web people!? Didn't work out, eh?

FJ, LL knows for almost a year now the Viewer 2.x UI is a desaster and lots of the residents refuse using it. So why does LL poke more and more (IMHO useless) features like social web stuff, display names and others into the viewer instead of making ONE wise decision and provide an optional UI that comes close to the old 1.23 interface, mainly that comes without sidebar but with multiple, closeable floaters? You would already see much more residents using a Viewer 2 based viewer. THAT would be an appreciated feature! How long does LL deny there's no issue with the UI?

The latest build from the Phoenix repository properly autodetects 42 groups as the limit. For the latest release 818 you still have to change it manually.

I knew the link to Facebook and other social web stuff would come with the release of Viewer 2 almost one year ago. What a useless feature. I definitely won't use that as I don't use those "we get rich by data mining you and selling your data" social web crap!

[QUICKTIP] Annoyed with incoming chat popups? Disable 'em!
A group blog by Secondlife in General
Torley, did you pass the request that the sidebar has to go - or at least become optional? The undockable panels, yeah, was a good idea for the beginning, but:
1.) You can't close them but have to redock them to go away. Minimizing is exactly what I don't want as I still see them as minimized bars on the screen.
2.) If I want to open an undocked panel, I am still in need of the sidebar to archive that.
Saying this, it still renders the sidebar highly annoying and cumbersome. Basically, what I and many many other residents want, is: A viewer where I don't have to use the sidebar. Just popup a floater when I use a specific function, for instance opening a profile.
Oh, and did I mention the sidebar still makes the right screen unusable for all sorts of HUDs and the minimap? This thing might be nice for a new resident or people that just wanna do some chatting a la Facebook. But for many advanced residents the sidebar is a patronizing annoyance. So - if not done yet - could you pass that info to the people in charge? So we get an option to turn off the sidebar and get a floater system similar to old 1.23 viewers?

[QUICKTIP] Running multiple Viewers? Separate your cache folders!
A group blog by Secondlife in General
Cerise, Ann is right when she says when running multiple instances of the same viewer only the first instance gets write access to the texture cache. Let's have a look what happens in LLAppViewer::initCache() in llappviewer.cpp:
BOOL read_only = mSecondInstance ? TRUE : FALSE;
LLAppViewer::getTextureCache()->setReadOnly(read_only) ;As we can see, the texture cache is set to read-only if you are running a second instance of the viewer. When I compile the viewer for myself, I always allow write access to the texture cache to all instances because I use different settings-files with different cache folders for each instance.

I'm using the latest build of Phoenix (compiling the sources from repo myself) which has already support of fake names and I enabled showing both fake names and real names - just to know if there's impersonation going on. Yesterday I was on a all-time-lagging-like-hell sim and guess what: A dozend people running around having their display name set. Of course it didn't work properly so they all had the "???" tag about their head. I was already about shouting arbitrarily in the crowd "Hi ???" and see what happens.
-
After looking up your profile I at least know why you're defending that display name crap: After being 90 days inworld you didn't have the pleasure of being part in many rounds of LL's neverending game "How to ruin resident's experience even more". So, welcome to the game!
-
Today I was curious and spent a while at Moose Beach infohub. C'mon, this is rediculous! I saw those poor lastname-free guys running around with the most stupid names. Are we really expected to remember such weird names?
-
The online Urban Dictionary has "Lindened" listed as a verb meaning "To break something in your attempts to improve them"
Really? Cool! Putting it on my list of rememberable phrases right under "to pull a Linden"...
-
Now we need to remember the permanent User Name, and the Display Name which the person can change over and over again. Grrrr...!
Just do it the way I do: Call everyone by his/her real name. Saves remembering useless fake names. Not my problem if someone has registered as "HotChickxxxChecker92" or something like that and will be called by that name!
-
Hmmmm didn't notice that. But I must confess I only used Viewer 2.3 to set the display name for my test alt because in Phoenix it didn't work properly yet. But display of both display and username work in Phoenix - at least for the name tag so far.
-
Ok, at least the latest Phoenix build from the source code repository shows the fake names and real names properly, so I can call them by their real name and see if somebody tries to impersonate me by his fake name.
-
The old style login with first name plus last name still works for me. Instead, username plus "resident" doesn't work for me. Wondering how many people called because that doesn't work.
-
I've been so waiting for this release! I love to see just Zak over my head as it fits my character a lot more than having a surname.
/me start's creating a non-pronouncable name with lots of crazy Unicode characters. Wondering how people will try to pronounce that on voice! This feature is so rediculous - oh forgot! Need to post that on Twitter! LOL

The web profiles are loaded in a browser running at your computer - not LL's servers. And the Facebook Like button is always directly loaded from Facebook.
