As I call myself friend to all these people, it bears mentioning that if I even notice that someone is hiding their online status from me, I'm going to assume they have a good reason for it that has very little to do with me. I have people on my list from way back, friends who haven't logged in for years, and whom I'm fairly certain never will again. But I keep those names there. I had fun with these people, and the memories are fond ones. It's a nice feeling to see them in the list.

I wish more residents were like us. thumbsup.gif.c193138407b8daf35a3a829acecb5a47.gif

When I was a mod on a mboard and saw a threading starting to derail or burst into flames, I'd toss a lock on it and depending on the content, move it to the "bin" area of the board where it's no longer publicly accessible.

Which is exactly what a mod should do even if they have the last name of Linden. Lock it, move it and let the admin (there should be only one) determine any violations and punishments. That has always been a standing rule for my mods on all of the bboards I've owned over the years. If the admin determines the thread is worth saving then the thread gets restored with appropriate action and the discussion continues. More fur flying in the given thread, it gets locked permanently. Most people deserve a second chance.

Properly, LL should request a no-action letter from the SEC, like this one: https://www.sec.gov/corpfin/pocketful-quarters-inc-072519-2a1

    Quote
    • gamers will only be able to transfer Quarters from their Quarters Hot Wallets for gameplay to addresses of Developers with Approved Accounts or to PoQ in connection with participation in e-sports tournaments;

Sounds like there is no "cashing out" or withdrawing of funds of any kind. Which would kill SL in a heartbeat. If merchants can't withdraw funds there is no point in selling. That is how many creators will look at it and we will lose more all at once than ever in the history of SL, including SL itself.

At some point LL is going to have to knuckle under and the longer it takes the harder it will be on LL which in turn will make it harder on residents to adjust to some major changes. Delaying the legally inevitable is not a good thing to do when you are in business.

I once asked a vendor to include pics in the box and they exuded on me.  I have no idea why it's such a ridiculous thing to ask.  Simply include the ad or MP listing pic.

When you have 10s of 1000s of clothing items spanning 13 years, there's no way I'm going to remember how something looks.

You could do your own snaps and keep them in a folder on your desktop rather than paying to upload. Just a suggestion. A bit of a PITA but for some worth doing. I happen to agree that all creators, regardless of what they create, should include an image of the creation with the product. Humans are visual beings. That won't change as long as we have eyes and a brain.

Catznip viewer actually allows this. You can setup "received items folders" and any time you receive inventory from any source, you can choose where that inventory goes (just select the folder where you want it) and in the case of unpacking from another object, the default option is into the same folder as the object you're unpacking. Seriously, people should look at the features of Catznip that are not in any other viewer (though this feature should be in all, including and especially the LL viewer. it's no-brainer "Duh" feature.)

To clarify: that received folder can be ANY folder in your inventory, including system folders (except the trash folder LOL)

I already have a received items folder for the MP. That isn't what I am talking about. I'm not interested in having to learn yet another viewer. I'm happy with Firestorm. I don't want everything going to the same folder. I would just have to move it to the one I want it in just as I have to do now. That defeats the whole purpose.

A dropdown that lists all of the main folders (not Inventory or Library) so that I can chose where it goes each and every time I unpack a box.

Fair warning: I am subject to come unglued on the next person that advertises Catznip to me. I don't want it. Stop trying to foist it off on me. I know what my needs are. You do not. It is that simple.

  6. I'll be happy when someone finally figures out a way to unpack directly to the main folder I would be moving it to anyway.

Why doesn't clothing go into the Clothes folder?

Why don't body parts go into the Body Parts folder?

Why do new folders created when unpacking always end up having to be moved by hand into the main folder they belong in?

When we buy something it goes directly into the Objects folder so I know it can't be that hard to code and "half the work" is already done.

The day I can unpack something I purchased and be able to direct it to the main folder I want it in (like so many other programs do)... oh wait... I almost forgot... this is SL. It's never going to happen.

I've learned a few skills; how to build in prims, how to mesh prim builds, how to write basic scripts (or better, how to edit more complex ones to adapt to my needs rather than rely on pre-bought all the time, or more frequently how to break them), how to make tattoos for SL avatars, how to build "worlds" or environments, how to use GIMP and now learning Blender (and signed on to learn Python next) and all of that as a direct result of SL. So it's been a great creative and learning outlet for me so far.

I've also learned things I wish I hadn't; how nasty certain circles can be (especially the RP circuit), how possessive people can be (over avatars), how sex is easy to come by even if you don't want it, how it's easy to meet but harder to actually connect with others, and just how quickly some are to lash out over something as simple as a joke taken the wrong way or miscommunication. I've also learned the lengths some will go to in order to harass and bully others online in the form of virtual stalking having seen two close friends go through it and impact on their real lives in ways I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Perhaps none of this is exactly SL-centric but I've certainly learned those things while here.

I've learned how quickly and easily virtual goods (or the endless pursuit of them that I never understood before) can burn a hole in my pocket if I'm not careful. I've learned to appreciate the value of words more than I did on other platforms and how a kind virtual gesture can make my (or someone's) real life day brighter. I've learned the value of "paying it forward" in helping where I can in the forums or groups in-world and seeing others find their voice and do the same; something I've never really experienced to this degree outside of SL either. I've learned patience (which is ironic considering in real life I'm actually a bit of a hot head, not that you'd know it), and I've learned how fun it is to essentially play dress ups with a virtual doll as an adult and visit and build and do things I generally don't or will never get to experience. To that end I've also learned how to lose hours or weekends (or years!) staring at a computer screen caught up in this fantasy of an online existence.

I've learned a lot more than I expected I would and probably have more life lessons to come. The other answers before mine were more guides or advice so not sure if I answered the question correctly but it's an answer all the same. :)

That pretty much covers the past 15 year of my SL.

There are a lot of 'unspoken rules' we learn along the way... here are a few from me.

Move your avatar away from the landing point asap. (Some sims do this automatically now).

Respect other Avatars, nobody likes to be pushed or walked over (literally).

Pick up your empty boxes before you leave.

Dont enter peoples homes uninvited even if they have no security orb and especially dont use their pose balls or X rated furniture and then refuse to leave when the 'owner' arrives!

The "cheat" I was talking about, is one of the three fitmesh LoD bugs. A fitted mesh is of course automatically scaled to fit the avatar. So the size you upload it at doesn't matter to its looks or actual render cost. You can make it as small or big as you like, it's all the same.

The calculated render cost, however, only takes the upload size into account and ignores the scaling done by the rigging. It also ignores the fact that LoD is usually effectively disabled for fitted mesh. That means, that if you upload the mesh at a very small size and with very low poly LoD models, you can trick the viewer into beiieving it is far less render heavy than it actually is.

The best way to estimate the actual render cost (or rather what the render cost would have been if the calculation had worked the way the Lindens intended), is to wear the item and get somebody using Firestorm to cam in close to it, inspect it and check the triangle count (you can't inspect items you wear yourself). Multiply that number by six and you have the base render cost and the rigged mesh multiplier. Then, if you want a more precise answer, add 384 for each 512x512 texture and 512 for each 1024x1024. (There are also a few other factors that may add to the render cost but the base render cost and the rigged mesh multiplier are usually the big ones.)

For example, if the head has 40,000 triangles and three 1024x1024 textures, the render cost would be at least 241,536. Compare that to the render cost figure the viewer gives you.

And now I'm shocked myself. This is the first time I've actually done the math and even though I knew it was bad, this is far worse than I expected.

Not really what I was asking but ok. I think I'll just stick with what I have since it's not hard to keep the complexity below 50k as long as I don't try to wear a lot of jewelry. More often than not my complexity is under 25k with just the body, hands, feet, head, hair, a top, jeans and footwear on.

    and right behind you.

You really should shift over to my right shoulder. The left is the one that has the adhesive capsulitis and you are just a tad bit heavy to be carrying around on it. Besides, it's my right ear that has lost the most hearing thereby giving you an almost undetectable in for your subliminals.

If you're using a Catwa head, it's totally off. Catwa is one of the big "ARC cheaters" and you can safely multiply the figure it shows up with by ten. The Maitreya body on the other hand, is one of the most "honest" fitted mesh items on the market and the actual render load isn't that much higher than what the ARC figure says. Depending on how many layers you use and how much of the body is alpha masked, a Maitreya body may even have an actual render load lower than what the number indicates.

Would you happen to have any info like this on the VISTA heads? Specfically the Zoe?  I have one I use with my Lara and I'd like to know if they "cheated" or not. I don't believe they did but I'd like that confirmed if possible.

Ouch! No, I wasn't presuming you didn't know how to use it - I'd thought you'd mentioned on another thread that you don't use FS? Anyway, that's all I'd do if I didn't want to hear from someone for whatever reason - just slap up a notification to let them know.

No I have never said I don't use FS. I have always said I do.

I use the notifications and I also use other features that work for me.  All too often people ignore those notifications and just keep on IMing.

  13. Just now, AnyaJurelle said:

Oh I keep forgetting you don't use Firestorm, do you? So yours possibly doesn't have a DnD privacy notification you can set?

I use FS and was on the support team for over 5 years. I think I know how to work it. Doesn't change anything I said. And no I am NOT good company today.

It's better for people to just be honest, tell the person they're deleting them and explain why. Short term pain, long term gain but I guess few have that kind of intestinal fortitude.

Not everyone hides their online status because they want to remove someone. Sometimes we just need peace and quiet or not to be disturbed while working.

Or maybe, just maybe, we don't feel up to dealing with people that drain us through no fault of ours or theirs for a while. Like today for me. Last night I had to take Dmitri to the hospital because his heart has been beating erratically for 4 days.

What I'm trying to say is sometimes there are good reasons to not show your online status even to those you may consider close friends in SL. Some days are just not good days.

Except you're wrong and that's the point Digit was making. See, this is why LL needs an official content creation blog that explains, in layman's terms, what causes lag and what doesn't.

LL could "borrow" this page from FS.

    https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/lag

That still leaves the problem of how to get people to actually read it and, at least, get the gist of it. On the other hand, I wouldn't put it past LL to locate it in some obscure portion of the website that isn't easily visible or found. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This seemed to have fixed itself for a while, but it is all whacked again.  It used to be that on my Notifications page, bolded titles were things I still needed to read and unbolded was for things I had already read.  Now that has swapped - which of course is confusing the heck out of me on which threads I need to pull up.  Additionally, reading a thread to its end does not always actually make it shown as read (bold versus not bold) on the next refresh of the Notifications page.

In other words, the whole Notifications stuff seems to randomly flaky and constantly changing in how the Notifications are actually presented.

Growing up an only child means I can spend hours alone in RL without it bothering me at all.

I had two older brothers who were never there for me and never played with me, so I may as well have been an only child. That is why I actually like being alone but at the same time it bothers me. The only other girls in the neighborhood were all 5 - 10 years older than I was when we moved into the house my grandfather built. I was 4 or 5 at the time. Maybe 6.

Here it's nice to chat and even nicer to hang out somewhere where everybody knows your name. The Forum is such a place.

    It can be...

    Cheers-640x360.jpg

I still haven't found my Cheers. Well... maybe. It's only been a couple of weeks and it is off season for SL. Once I see how "da boss" changes seasons in the region and can be prepared for it so it will go quickly and smoothly without upsetting the residents too much then I can work on getting them to hang out together for an hour or two a couple of times a month. We can do anything from quoting from our favorite books or "reading" poetry to just chatting or companionable silences. I might even be able to get the RL other half to DJ for us once in a while... for tips.

    Or not.

We'll see how it goes, now that that cat is out of the bag.

Oh well, they've been warned now. xD

I find this quite funny, "barely notice the difference" Being on SL as a passionate photographer realism is the main focus. Whether thats fantasy or realistic photography I wouldnt have that option if the Avatar was a cartoon.

    angel1_001.png

Now that is my kind of SL photography. It looks like all you did in a photo manip is ... sign your name. That is worthy of framing and hanging on your SL wall.

It would make an absolutely gorgeous wall mural with or without the "model". SL or RL. ^_^

My goodness, this is NOT about YOU! You are not the center of the universe, not even the center of SL! I know that someone using SL the way you do has not to agree to the Tilia TOS - I have a couple of such accounts myself! I also have an account that sells enough L$ each year to cover the premium membership (and cashed out aka processed credit twice in 13 years, the last time maybe 8 years ago) - with this one I only had to agree to the Tilia TOS but not provide aditional personal data. And I have my SIM owner account that doesn't cash out aka process credit but sells high amounts of L$ (well, high for little me) that not only had to agree to the Tilia TOS but also provide aditional data for just selling the next batch of L$. Just in case this is the cause for your confusion: "cash out" for me means "taking money out of SL". Simply selling L$ to cover SL fees is not cashing out.

Now you are jumping to conclusions. But then you must be that rare type of person who never ever uses their own experiences as examples and believes anyone that does is making everything all about themselves when nothing could be further from the truth.

Enjoy your SL. It's the only SL you've got. Ta.

  20. So I ran the benchmark on my tater that rarely has any trouble running SL at just below Ultra just for grins n giggles.

    image.thumb.png.80936becfde022852129ecaa6d19d2fc.png

    https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/19205705

I told you it is a tater. And the only time I get any stuttering is when I've been logged in for hours without relogging or rebooting. Rarely do I need to reboot to stop the stuttering. Relogging usually takes care of it.

Oh and while the benchmark was running I had my browser open and was doing a couple of other things. My pc slowed a little but not enough to be frustrating.

ETA: Oh neat... after scrolling down a bit I found this:

    UserBenchmarks: Game 30%, Desk 36%, Work 29%
    CPU: AMD FX-8300 - 41.3%
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 - 35.3%
    HDD: Toshiba DT01ACA200 2TB - 97.5%
    USB: WD My Book 1230 2TB - 58.5%
    RAM: Samsung M378B1G73DB0-CK0 24GB - 43.8%
    MBD: Asus M51BC

The My Book is my external drive.
