No. I heard some "rumors" years ago about people using voice to exploit/leak real IP addresses. I don't know if that was true or if it's still true, but not bothering to chance it. If anyone has the official word on this, I would like to know.

DJs don't have a way to tell who's IP is whose. Not unless they want to spend an insane amount of time tracking each and every IP that shows up on whatever program they use for DJing. If they were to do that they wouldn't have much time to spend on the mic and it's obvious the set is either canned or the DJ is preoccupied.

Sure, DJs can see your IP but they don't know that it is your's and there isn't anything they can do with it that can harm you. As for voice, it's free software from a company called Vivox that LL uses and the only way anyone can "leak" an IP address is if they say it out loud over the mic. Fortnite uses Vivox as do many, many other MMOs.

No, I don't use voice. Even though I have hearing loss I can use voice but only if the other conversants don't mind repeating most of what they say 5 or 10 times depending on how loud my tinnitus gets from using voice. The "ringing" in my ears can and does get loud enough to drown out pretty much all noises. Even loud ones.

It does but sometimes the password needs to be entered and sometimes I forget that. It becomes a vicious circle.

Might be time for a new modem/router.

If you lease it then you don't want to let them get any older than 5 years because (at least with Comcast and Frontier) at that age they are no longer in the companies' system as they have been discontinued and are no longer used. We learned that the hard way. It's a good idea to check with your provider at least once a year to see if the equipment needs to be updated. You might even be able to renegotiate your bill (in the US) to a lower monthly rate.

How do you know the thing you derendered isn't sneaking up on you?

I have eyes in the back of my head.

At least, all my kids were convinced of it. They never realized I could look through windows or peek around corners or listen from an unseen spot.

If LL does know if it has been hacked in past, NDA's will likely keep us from finding out about it.

It did happen in the past, once, in 2006. LL can deny it now all they want to but there are those of us who have been around a long time and remember. WE remember because we were here when it happened and when LL made the announcement. The articles are not the announcement by LL. They are evidence of the truth in my words.

I remember it very well since it happened about 2 days before my birthday.

I should add I don't block anyone... Once or twice I have, temporarily til  I was confident it had blown over, then unblocked.. I do block spamming objects though!

Very few make it to my permanent block list. Those that do deserve far worse for making it necessary for me block them permanently.

I tend to really overthink things. I always want to know what's at the root of everything, and why certain things are looked at in different ways by people.

With de-rendering, some people will happily have their viewer to set show friends only, and click click away, de-rendering objects they don't like. I feel so odd if I do this. Even if people and things make my fps drop to 2.5, I want to see what's around me! If I erase parts of SL it feels like a malfunction. I know things and people are there, they're just ghosts, and I feel "off"

Do others feel like this? And what basic factor in people do you think causes the difference? Is it immersion? Is it a "my world, my way" thing, rather than accepting all the speed bumps and imperfections at face value? I also wonder if people who erase parts also are the same ones who always use their own windlights. I feel like that's connected.

    Just curious what others think.

It's no different from blocking someone who harasses you. It's just a different form of harassment you are blocking/de-rendering.

No need for sarcasm. I read a zillion different opinions on that lady and her suit, here alone. And everyone fancies themselves an expert, but few really are. So, like I asked, if even half of what she alleges is true, about very sloppy, insecure IT practices, shouldn't we have reason to worry a bit?

Not really since LL is not a major target like Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.

Do you have any idea of how often SL undergoes DDoS attacks and most of us never even notice it? It happens all the time.

  8. Food for thought.

Most companies will file a 1099 on anyone they pay out to regardless of the amount (unless it's an amount so low as to not be cost effective). They are covering their collective @$$es by doing so.

Regardless of amounts reported, it is the legal responsibility of the individual taxpayer to accurately report any and all income to the IRS. If you fail to report any income, your butt is on the line for prison time and heavy fines. If the company fails to report the income, both of your butts could be doing time and heavily fined.

    It s the last version

That isn't what Love meant by "headlights".  It was a reference to boobs.

And, although it's not true, I'm going to claim, for the benefit of @Amina Sopwith, that one of the books I tossed in the chipper was John Norman's "Slave Girl of Gor".

It's the least I could do for you, Amina.

I couldn't do it. Not even to that garbage. Thanks to the strong appreciation and meticulous care of hardbound books my father instilled in me. I can't destroy any book no matter what the content is.

I tried to fly once using Firestorm's 'super duper boost'.  That was a major trip - skyrocketed me across the entire region before I could blink.  I do use that mode if I want to actually Fly up to a super high spot, rather than TP there.  I usually keep the boost disabled though so that I can control the flying a bit more.  Some days it still seems like it is out of control fast, especially sometimes a light tap of Page Up or Page Down.

I've never enabled it and it's still too fast or me. It was that way with the old LL V1, too.

I almost never walk in SL - usually only when I'm in a sim that enforces the No Fly be sending home anyone flying.  I fly or TP just about everywhere I go, even if it is just going from inside the house out to the yard.

Interesting how we all view and use (or not) those abilities.

Well.. I do tp around and even set up my own personals.

I don't like flying because it's just too fast. I find flying planes in SL easier than flying an avatar. At least the planes behave more like you would expect one to, unlike an avatar.

Walking is for RL, flying is for SL.

I don't fly much in SL. I prefer to walk. Or dogtrot since the Vista AO I'm using has that anim. Faster than a walk but still much slower than a run. Sliding [downward] usually triggers it.

About the only time I do fly is when building and need to have my av at a greater distance than usual.

I was going to say "maybe not", but I can't be sure. I've always had an active imagination, a strong oppositional streak, and a significant ability to keep myself amused. Nevertheless, as Rolig observes, I do need some minimal recognizable framework on which to build. That said, though SL certainly allows me to "do" things I can only imagine in RL, it's nowhere near covering the ground my imagination plows every day. It's a tautology, but I can't imagine a world that could contain my imagination.

I'm currently having a good time "realizing" myself as the roiling, boiling, spontaneously decaying fuzzball of moral ambiguity, but it's not a look that will last. It's not a relatable presentation. It doesn't give people enough to judge, and that's what we're wired to do in encounters.

While my flights of fancy may go a li'l farther than some of you, I do eventually come home.

Maybe I should have explained my "it's full of stars" comment last night. You have seen 2001: A Space Odyssey haven't you?

Not everyone has a home to go home to... so you've got the advantage there.

Home alone, SL plans afoot...... get comfy.

Firestorm doesn't fully load and freezes.

Ok....relog, and noe I get error message 105, something about name not recognised. So rashly I uninstall, and so far it won't reinstall.

Tried the SL viewer.....crashed me out.

Tried my old laptop.......super super laggy and crashed me out.

Just sitting here sobbing uncontrollably......when will it all end?????????

    😥😥😥😥😥😥

You're first mistake was thinking reinstalling is going to fix everything. It won't. Also, if you don't do a "clean" reinstall, you're leaving behind files that could be corrupted and installing over the top of them won't uncorrupt the files.

On the bright side you didn't mention clearing cache. :D

    Quote

    Step 5: Clear Cache

Clearing cache should only be done when there is a problem with the cache, or when there is a significant change in the viewer that requires it (such as a change to the KDU render code). The viewer will automatically clear cache in such cases, but manual clearing may be quicker.

When downgrading, you should always clear the cache.

If you have to clear cache in order to use the viewer version you are about to install, please see this page.

If these things happened then its an obvious flag to LL to lock the account to keep it safe.

selling lindens one day and buying them the next day

I don't think it was selling one day and then buying the next. People do that all the time without LL placing the account on hold. Probably more the number of transactions combined with the amounts triggered the hold, not the frequency, in this case. Consider the email was changed first then the next day Ls were sold, then the third day more Ls purchased (were those Ls placed for sale as well?)... I'd be giving that account the side eye myself. There are also the limits LL has in place to consider. If you try to exceed those limits your account gets locked until they have reviewed the situation and determined if a fraud attempt has been made or not. If not, things go back to normal. Or whatever is considered normal for SL.

That's a very good likeness of Carol!

My parents replaced their TV with me, either thinking they didn't have time for both, or that I might be more entertaining. I did sneak in some TV watching at friend's houses and binged a lot on the oldies station in the engineering school student lounge, so I'm not completely culturally clueless.

I do have a TV now, but I don't have cable.  I stream a few things and, like you, I am overwhelmed by both the choices and the expense. My Mom's cable/internet bill (she loves baseball) is starting to look like a car payment.

Or maybe... just maybe, you were one of those kids that required a little tighter rein because you liked taking things apart to see how they work. In more ways than one. ;)

I'm not overwhelmed by the choices. I'm not interested in watching most of it. Prime Time isn't Prime Time anymore.

    Carol Burnett's Scarlett is classic...

I loved her show and the way she would tell her grandmother she loves her at the close of each episode. I loved watching tv back then. These days... not so much. Hundreds of channels now and the pickings are just as slim (if not more so!) as they were 40 years ago.  The part that really bugs me though is in order to have some of the "basic " channels (Weather Channel, SfFy, BBC-A, Science, History) you have to pay twice as much for what ends up being less to watch. :/

Oh and to stay on topic, here is Carol as Scarlett O'Hara Barbie.

Today, we deal in snapshots and sound bites.  We expect to return from a vacation with several thousand photos on an iPhone. Instead of buying an album of music that has been arranged on CD to fill a theme, we plan on grabbing new tunes one at a time from the Internet to create our own patchwork quilt of music.  And then we rearrange the collection at will, moving each  piece of music as a separable chunk.  We even travel in digital ways, visiting the world by hopping from one airport destination to another rather than taking the slow route to see what's between them.

Nope, sorry, not we. I can't live that way and I don't. Can't afford any of that anyway.
