  1. re: increase in group limit - you may find that this works on many 1.* TPVs (though a message may indicate that the maximum is still 25 they often let you add and use them).

re: teleport compression - whilst offering a good improvement in many cases, there does seem to be the odd bug or two with this at the moment.  If you come across anything please report it on the JIRA.

    Viewer 2.4 Released!

    2.4:

Textures still rez faster with my old SnowGlobe (and 1.23).

Make sure that you reset your cache in 2.4 (or even better set it to a different location) and that HTTP Textures are set to load (setting is in the 'Develop' Menu - obtained by pressing Crl+Alt+Q) - it should have been set for you but sometimes it doesn't happen.  You should notice a tremendous improvement in texture loading and rezzing times over 1.23 with HTTP textures enabled.

    Viewer 2.4 Released!

If you are having problems with Viewer 2.4 crashing then please, please allow crash reports and also raise a bug report on the JIRA with details of your machine configuration from the 'About Second Life' menu option.  I am finding stability with my XP and Window 7 installations to be great - but there is no doubt that some are not. But the Lindens want to fix it - so please give them the info they need.

Thank God for Phoenix and upcoming Firestorm...

Although Firestorm is heavily based on Viewer 2, the team have made some really good changes to it, addressing many of the features that were not liked in the official version - I expect it will become very popular when it is released.  There are also other good TPV versions of Viewer 2 out there, particularly Kirstens Viewer (always cutting edge and full of eye-candy) and Catznip (with RLV and a lot of other nice touches that make Viewer 2 easier to use).

Molokai mentioned something earlier about having doubled up chatlogs, I have the same thing. Though haven't experienced the missing responses that you have.

Finally found this one in the JIRA list as VWR-24256.

Esbee Linden commented on it as follows:"The problem is that display names get updated sometime after login -  depending on your connection, it might be a little while. If you start  chatting with someone before display names resolve, then a log file is  created with their username (which is the fallback for missing display  name). When the display name finally resolves, a new chat log is created  using the display name."

It looks like they are still deciding the best way to resolve this.

May I ask how much LL is paying you to constantly side with them even when the entire playerbase is going the opposite direction or what your Linden alt name is?

Sadly nothing - but I am open to offers.

I usually come on the official forums to give help/advice or report on the latest developments of Snowstorm or sometimes the StarLight skin for it.  Viewer 2 is LL's chosen direction even if it is far from perfect at the moment.

Second lifes biggest attraction, user created content is also its biggest downfall...

That is what makes it a VW rather than any other type of game - it has creativity.  If you are happy with having someone else deciding your environment there are plenty of other games out there. Modern games will better SL for eye-candy but you can't create in them - do you know of another creative VW that can match SL (other than Opensim of course) without a big sacrifice to either performance or graphics?

Sl isnt hardware heavy anymore, a 3yr old  budget laptop with intel graphics shouldnt have a problem..

Do you really think that anyone would have a good experience in SL playing it on an Intel Atom powered machine?  I tried it a few weeks ago on a year-old dual-core Intel desktop with Intel on-board graphics and it was having trouble with all the textures even on 'Low' settings.

I have really not heard of that problem before - sounds very odd.  I suggest that you experiment by removing/renaming the logs of conversations with a friend you often chat to - then have a conversation with them later and see what log files are produced, and what persists in-world.  If it is repeatable like this I suggest you raise a JIRA for it with all the info in it.

A web browser client is easier to run or older machines, along with netbooks, iphones, ipads etc that do not have the required graphics capability for the Second Life platform.  As this is where a lot of mass-market users are it is an obvious direction.

LL have said that 'if' they develop a browser version they will still keep the standalone Viewer.  Viewer 2 may have some Web browser styling about it - but it is still very much a seperate download, just like Viewer 1.23.

Could I just ask that people are not put off Opensim by DarkFyre - there is some wonderful stuff there, hosted by some very nice people - and it has a lot of promise for the future.  But for now SL Viewer 2.4 is what is being discussed here (and SL does have the better extant physics engine - ninja physics is still not in general use and I am doubtful it will ever better Havok ).

I have lots of dealings with SL residents, as I produce an independent skin for Viewer 2 - and realise that they come from various backgrounds, continents and skill levels - after all that is what makes SL so diverse and wonderful.  Or maybe they should sit C++ exams to join?

Thanks for declaring your true allegiance, and the advert, Darkfyre.  I was disappointed not to hear about how your crash-rate and script engine were superior to LL's...oh wait a minute, I know why.

SL and Opensim both have their merits, but the arrogance with which you treat ordinary residents, and misinformation you ply, does no credit to the Opensim community at all.

I also note that it is not possible to block people on your Friend's List from seeing you when you are online.

I've tested this and it seems to work fine - just untick the box in 'Notes and Privacy' of the avatar you want to be unable to see you when online - it may take a little while to take effect of course.

Anyone else have the issue of after a while of being loggin in names become question marks?

This is a well-known problem that was caused as an unexpected consequence of some changes - it happens at times and not others.  The Lindens are fixing it for future releases.

P.S. You better listen to me! Sant Claus! I didnt mentioned fact that sculpts load slower that previous viewer and i have no idea why you set that lod factor to 1 instead 5!!!!!!!!

`Be glad it's '1' - it was '0' in an earlier release until we pressured them to change it.  Lower LOD values do impove performance.

Unfortunately, with this release, you broke all <a href=url target="_blank"> links

before, when you clicked on something with target="_blank" an external browser window would open.

Are you saying that you were exploiting a bug in the old version - or is this really what you would expect a system to do?  If it is the latter please raise a JIRA bug report for it.

    Viewer 2.4 Released!

Will they fix the website bug so new residents can actually log in to their accounts, the JIRA and the forums, it's only been a month or so with no word from LL other than they "have a problem".

You can follow the progress of this at WEB-3308 -  It has been assigned, but the area that will be dealing with it are not the best at communicating progress, if there is any.

    Viewer 2.4 Released!

Kristen - you may be pleased to hear that the Snowstorm team have got this task - STORM-761 (As a SL developer, I want to help unblock development of Windlight Estate Settings code so that we can move forward with this feature development) in their current Sprint. This will just be a first step, and I expect it will take a while but it is clear that they are looking at this.  If you like the idea you might like to vote for STORM-761.
