  1. You can untick 'Show Display Names' in Preferences->General
  2. the logs still record you by your username.
  3. Some answers to other posts on here: LL have addressed a number of bugs as evidenced in the release notes. Performance on my four-year old Celeron 1.8MHz laptop with an average ATI card for those days is marginally better than before (but far better than 2.0 or 2.1) - and definitely useable - those with more powerful machines that are having problems should raise it in a JIRA if they cannot resolve the problems. The limit of 64 characters only appears to apply to entering classifieds - this is because they failed to correct a line in the xml that said '64' to '255' - may have been that they didn't spot it until immediately before release. It has been fixed in the soon to be released Viewer 2.4 Beta. You can choose to hide/ignore Display Names by ticking the box in Preferences->General if you don't like them. If you are still having problems with texture loading please make sure you enable HTTP textures and then clear all caches. Second Life seems to object if you mix HTTP with non-HTTP textures.
  4. The official Viewer - and the one with the main panel on the downloads page is 2.2 The one under 'Second Life Beta Viewer' is the Beta version of the forthcoming 2.3. The latest (and with the most features) version of the viewer (which will go towards 2.4) is available daily from the Snowstorm team. This version may have occassional bugs as it is just a development viewer.
  5. If you are using Viewer 2 these are options coming in a forthcoming release - probably 2.4 or earlier in a month or so. At present it is not possible, except through using the Debug Settings in the 'Advanced' menu.
  6. I would really like to be able to use just one viewer but as of now, there seems to be some sort of glitch in 2.2 that makes using it near impossible due to a stuttering issue on my system, but phoenix doesn't seem to support media on a prim. I'm wondering, are there any TPVs based on the 1.23 viewer that support media on a prim? Will there ever be? Seems unlikely unles they make a very substantial redesign. And what are the chances that mesh will never get third party support either? The Mesh code has been given to TPV developers so displaying and playing with mesh shouldn't be a problem. However the upload process for Mesh uses proprietary Havok software that is rather expensive - so it may be a little while before something can be written to replace that element.
  7. the main reason i DON"T use LL viewers is it doesn't have the RLV feature. Phoenix seems to be still, the more stable and feature loaded viewer but of course, its all based on user preference. Both Catznip and the Restrained Love Viewer now are Viewer 2-based TPVs running with RLV. Both also improve on the features offerred by the official viewer.
  8. The reality is that Viewer 2.2 is several weeks old - because there has to be a point at which the code is pulled off Snowstorm and and put through full testing together with other Viewer changes from other teams before being released. KL pulls from the latest Snowstorm build each time and rapidly gets out a working version. This sometimes means that Linden-introduced bugs get carried through into production. Kirstens Viewer is cutting edge and the users get used to the problems, and benefits, associated with this - such an approach is not suitable with a Viewer intended for general use. Long may both approaches continue.
  9. I will try and get other colour schemes out as time and ability permits - the elusive dark-on-light interface is proving surprisingly hard to finish off and has been in development for a month now. I have also been messing around with fonts/spacing/padding to try and get a more legible format especially when using a notebook, the screen of which Viewer 2 fills up with too much blank and unproductive space. The standard Viewer 2 interface is poor for anyone with less than perfect eyesight, and even then the colours/contrast are far from perfect. While I will try my hardest not to get hit by a truck I do know that Linden Lab do plan to look at skinning as part of their backlog, and there are already at least four TPVs out there based on Viewer 2 and a number of talented open-source developers working with Linden lab on Viewer 2, so more people are becoming skilled in modifying it, and hopefully this will result in more choice for the future. So, truck or no truck, the progression of Viewer 2 and choices based around it should hopefully continue.
  10. Transparency Grrrrrrr! Just had begun to work on an Project and I only can set the transparency to 90 % but no more to 100 % Like it was before! Krystall - I've changed that in the StarLight skin (mentioned earlier in these comments) - just pop that on top and you can build completely invisible stuff.
  11. Hitomi, unfortunately this doesn't work for Mac users. LL never quite got the render engine right on the Mac client, enabling both FBO and anti-aliasing on the 2.2 release client (and all versions prior) fills the screen with graphics artifacts and junk on the screen. Sorry - I should have clarified that this, and stuff like it, is what they needed to fix. I'm not a Mac user but it does seem like there are a significant number on sl who are and deserve a decent service.
  12. They are listed in priority. Group #1 1. I want a spell checker 2. I want to not have to click in the chat box to start typing after using the cursor in the inventory. 3. The cache reloads every time I log on, stop this. 4. Half the time my money does not show and requires a relog for it to appear. Group #2 1. I want to adjust my bandwidth slider more accurately. 2. The x,y,z, coordinated should be viewable by default 3. Stop mini map rotation by default. 4. I would like for all permission in the build HUD to be independent of each other. 5. I would like to have the LM tab removed in the sidebar. I can get to LMs just fine from inventory. Group #1 I think we'd all agree that a spell-checker should be standard on modern software. Does your cache really reload - the cache contains low level indicators of the textures to fetch and on a fast system should only take 5 seconds to obtain all textures after logon (especially since using HTTP textures). The money loading one does seem to be an odd bug some experience at times. Group #2 Is adjusting the bandwidth in 100 Kb chunks really not sufficient? If not you can set it manually using 'ThrottleBandwidthKBPS' in debug settings. Two of the other things are down to personal preferences and only need setting once - Is an extra tab on the sidebar that you won't use (for places) really that annoying when a number of people find it quite useful? Yes it would be nice to customise it - but I'd rather, like you, that they fixed the big things like antialiasing not working on Macs. I think there are a lot of features/bugs fixed that other people really care about as well in this release. Perfect - no, better - yes.
  13. If you are put off Viewer 2 by it's dark, screen-filling feel you might like to try the StarLight skin Viewer 2 (now in three coloured themes). It uses lighter colours, transparent floaters, smaller camera and lots of extra features in the UI to make it much more than a normal re-skin - read more about it at the StarLight skin wiki page. Hopefully this may improve your Viewer 2 experience.
  14. A couple of issues that people have brought up: Antialiasing - the fix is in the Viewer 2.2 release - you have to set "RenderUseFBO" in the Debug Settings to TRUE first, and then you should get access to the option if you can use it. I am getting a severe performance hit with antialiasing on Viewer 2.2. that I am not getting when using it on the 2.2 Beta - so if you are having trouble with it I suggest you use the near identical and seemingly stable Beta Viewer from the Downloads page. Double Click Teleport - This is available and you need to set "DoubleClickteleport" to TRUE in the Debug Settings - not very user friendly or obvious is it.
  15. Yes, I want IMs in my e-mail, but not the spammy Group Notices! https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5132 Just set up a filter in your email tool to mark anything with 'Second Life - Group notice:' in the title as Spam.
  16. Hey Torley, What about getting some privacy in-world? Prior to SL Viewer2 it was pretty easy to turn-off one's online/in-world status in the friends list (even toggle one's online/in-world status for individual friends in one's friends list) but in SL Viewer2 that functionality seems to be missing. What's up with that? I really miss that feature! Is there a way to regain that control in SLV2? Look under 'Notes and Privacy' tab in the appropriate Profile. P.S. I know I'm not Torley but hopefully that is helpful.
  17. So the Lab is excited - and the users of other MMORPGs that used it are sad. You messed up big time with AU - shouldn't have bought it, and shouldn't have closed it!
  18. Oh wow, I just installed "Starlight" for the new V2.2 - it's a heck of a lot more than just a skin: ..... I'm really loving this! Thanks - and I didn't even have to pay Imagin to say that.
  19. Having got that off my chest, I have to ask about this new "double click and be there..." What happened to old fashioned walking? What happens when you double click and wind up in some location where you don't belong or aren't welcome? This was a feature requested by residents as they found it useful in some TPVs.
  20. And don't get me started on performance, as any Viewer I've tried which was built upon a V1 codebase renders the scene noticeably faster than V2. Viewer 2 hasn't left beta quality yet, and should NOT be in use as Second Life's default viewer. Have you actually tried Viewer 2.2.0 Beta? Or are you an "I don't have to try it to know it is rubbish" guy? I download and run the daily development build each day and the difference in rendering speed and texture rezzing since 2.0 and even 2.1 is amazing, except on very low-end machines and a few that seem to have specific glitches they have yet to fix - it even looks decent on my 4-year old laptop. Also the first time you run it, it is a bit slower as the caches fill as you might expect. Where Viewer 2 does still fail in comparison to the 1.** viewers is in overall performance when moving around where FPS is consistently lower and it is not as smooth - but at least now lockups are momentary rather than locking up for 10 seconds. If this was 5 months ago I'd be agreeing with you, but not anymore.
  21. There was a question about the colours for Viewer 2. These two alternative colour schemes are available in StarLight 2.2.1 (a special version for Viewer 2.2.0 Beta) - as well as a lot of viewer tweaks. More on the StarLight page on the Second Life Wiki. A brighter orange: https://wiki.secondlife.com/w/images/8/89/Original_Orange.png A few blue touches from Viewer 1: https://wiki.secondlife.com/w/images/3/3e/Nostalgia_Blue.png
  22. Weren't viewer-usage stats supposed to be published with this statement? That is very true - along with new user retention rates.
  23. I could comment on so many aspects of the post - but here is a fourth option: Enable skinning as in Viewer 1.** - that way several different skins presenting simple or complicated preference options could be chosen - and the users will help you by wtiting them. Many of the options that are already in the debug settings, but few people seem to know about, were discussed at the OH - providing them as options in an advanced skin would provide users with more choice at no extra effort to the Lab. These skins can also be developed to give a viewer focus to different user communities while using the Viewer 2 code.
  24. Hey Hotmomma, Am also currently using a machine using the ATi x300 graphics card - good to see you out there. Unlike you am using only a 1.73GHz Pentium M on a laptop - so it is possible! Am also on mobile broadband and get 800K if I am lucky, 40K if I am not and am running Windows XP. And, hey, Second Life actually runs surprisingly. Yes it is laggy even on a modified 'Low' Graphics settings but it does work and doesn't log me off much. And I run Avast Anti-Virus and a firewall so clearly that isn't the problem. Am even running Viewer 2.0 at times and it runs slower, but works. Would suggest you look at what else is running on your machine - often other processes can often hog resources Second Life needs. But at least this shows you that Second Life is not picking on your graphics card - best of luck in finding out what is affecting it. I would also suggest you use Second Life's own browser and kill any Firefox sessions before using it as Firefox can really consume resources at times.
