  1. Alwin You want to know the Status of the Grid Status Page? It's easy - "Lights On, Nobody Home". It's still holiday time and I very much doubt if anyone with posting permissions is around at Battery Street. Sorry, I know that is negative-sounding, but it is also very likely to be correct.
  2. Hi and thanks, Whirly Happy New Year However....if, as you say, the servers are restarted whether or not there is new code to roll (and we now know there is good reason to do this), why was there no Main Server restart on Tuesday? I suppose given that metric, next Tuesday will see Main Server restarts without a code change? It just seems to me that there is neither rhyme nor reason to the Lindens' actions on restarts/rolls, whatever the common-sense procedure might be! Maybe, reading what You write, there have been changes to the Linux update code, hence their arrival on RC channels first. Maybe that is the sense of it. :smileyfrustrated:
  3. Nal Thanks for the clarification. This just leaves me with one question. If the Linux updates were important, why were only the RC channels updated, why not Main Server as well? And a Happy New Year to All. :smileyhappy:
  4. Yes, since there was no apparent server version change the restart must have been to tweak some other aspect of the servers. That may have been security-related and LL are always (for good reason) tight-lipped about such things. It was just a surprise and had one or two of my contacts complaining about sims being down, hence my original comment. :smileysurprised:
  5. Alwin Firstly, I speak as I find, and I find LL wanting in this case. Second, I have complimented LL on some of their successes this year, if you did not see them , that is not my error. And a Happy New Year, when it comes to you too. (I have a supply of Humbugs, if you want some!) :smileytongue:
  6. OK New Grid Status blog. wonderful...but no Google Calendar, so...imagine the surprise..we are getting an RC channel roll today and NO INFO on WHAT is being rolled to them. Brilliant! Well Done LL! The new system is SO much better (not). Could it be, perhaps that no-one with permissions to post about server changes was available to tell us, or is this (as seems far more likely), simple incompetence again? Oh and Happy New Year, Linden Lab.
  7. Luminye This is a case for SL support, either as a trouble ticket or, if your account is Premium, in a live Chat. It might also be that the region you are attempting to log in at is for some reason offline. In that case a login at some other location, either from favourites or at a "Safe Hub" might be advisable.
  8. Ethan Your post suggests that you would be much wiser and have more chance of a response if you were to submit this issue to Linden Lab Support as a JIRA entry. For advice on how to file a JIRA see the SecondLife website
  9. Wolf Valid point, but my main concern (aside from the general issue of LL's competence) was that restarts were still going on well after the time of the announcement. The conclusion that could be drawn is either that the GSP announcements are made irrespective of the actual status of the roll, or that some sort of secondary roll was being performed.
  10. Caleb, and anyone at Battery Street that reads this: Firstly: I second Wolf's comments about the new Grid Status page. The lack of Google calendar is annoying, since it precludes planning, and Secondly: there were DEFINITELY sims being restarted long after the announcement on the GSP that the Main Server Roll was complete. It is almost physically impossible to do a Main Server roll THAT quickly. Be realistic! ETA: A few thoughts on Wolf's reference to Sansar. One would think that in order to encourage investment of time and money (yes, Real Money - the sort we pay Linden Lab week in, week out for virtual real estate in Second Life) that Linden Lab would want to show how competently they run SL. Well I would expect it, perhaps I'm naiive. It just isn't happening, which makes me wonder if the ARE capable of it. When it was started SL was pretty well unique and novel. With all due respect to Sansar, that is just not true any more, and getting it out of Public Beta will be a real struggle unless they up their game.
  11. Caleb Better late than never, I suppose. hohum :smileyindifferent:
  12. Caleb (or whoever is tasked with this) We have a new streamlned Status Page, which has told us that the Main Server Channel has been rolled. BUT TO WHAT, PRAY?? I didn't expect that the changes to the Status Page would have much effect here. It looks like I was right. SNAFU :smileymad:
  13. Something that occurred to me: while it seems true that the increased prim allocation on pretty much all servers now has not had a detrimental effect on most SL functions, I wonder...with increasing numbers of prims and meshes in sims...does this put more load on the Content Delivery Network due to all the new textures that are required? Just a thought.... :smileysurprised:
  14. It seems clear that there is something wrong with the way the server information is being disseminated to the CDN. This many issues is diagnostic of such a situation, and it is not the first time this has occurred. It is very hard to understand, I am in the UK and am currently not seeing an issue, whereas my partner, also in the UK but on another network is seeing exactly what the other contributors are reporting. I must therefore assume that we are using different CDN servers. The lack of response to this by LL makes me think that it is only a part of the CDN that is at fault. I guess unless a larger part of the SL community is affected and complains, they have insufficient reason to act. Mind you it may be Swan syndrome, serene on the surface but a heck of a lot of paddling going on just out of view! :smileywink: ETA at 11.45am SLT: Well maybe the texture issue is hitting me after all. They are certainly slower than last week and I've seen this on and off a few times lately. So maybe LL needs to talk to its collaborators in the CDN.
  15. Arabella I'm beginning to think they don't tell Caleb anything! It may. as Whirly suggests simply be a matter of semantics: no software update= no roll as far as Caleb is concerned. It seems that a swish new webpage cannot hide the fact that Lindens don't talk to each other and like to keep us guessing! :smileyfrustrated:
  16. Woo! Shiny...? er...but will this new page actually tell us the same version of the truth about SL workings as the old one or will it actually be accurate? We will wait and see. I, for one, hope this new set-up is more informative than a first glance suggests.
  17. Qie! Thankyou, that is what I was trying to remember...I am pretty sure that FMOD is involved in this issue, one of the FS devs mentioned it a good while ago and it slipped my mind totally! The trouble for me is that I am almost totally ignorant of how some of these routines work, so I'll need to poke Whirly and see if I can get an explanation that won't blow my little mind. :smileywink:
  18. Qie All your points are well-made, but the essential issue remains. The sim does have a role in the routing of the chosen stream to the client irrespective of whether it retransmits it or not. It is most likely some aspect of sim-client communication that has become intermittent, and just what that is I haven't a clue. The fact that some sims cause random dropouts while others do not is, in my estimation very likely to be an issue with the workload a sim-server is expected to do now. That there is a similar but most likely unconnected client side component involved is also in my estimation, clear, since that type of dropout tends to fade at whatever setting the client has for it. What I find frustrating is the apparent (and I emphasise apparent) lack of action with regard to this issue either on the part of Linden Lab or the TPV developers. I would just like to know what is causing the issue! :smileyfrustrated:
  19. Alwin I'm sure you know this, but music streams in SL have been suffering this periodic disconnecting for over a year now, and no-one seems to either know what the true cause is, or be able to correct it. It is not simply the listener's connection at fault since nearly everyone I speak to has encountered it. At first I was told it was something particular to Firestorm, but I can personally vouch for it occurring on other clients and other connections. Some sims seem more prone to stream failure than others, so I am inclined to think that at least part of the issue is at the server level. It may have a similar causality as the perennial issues that folk have with Vivox, but I do not know. By the way, music fading is something that can be modified at the client level, or at least it can in FS.
  20. So... Rolling Restarts RC Channel by Status Linden on ‎11-23-2016 07:15 AM [updated 7:13 AM PST,23 November 2016] Today's rolling restarts are now underway. But what are you guys rolling?? You said there was nothing to roll!! :smileysurprised: Linden Posts: 180 No Deploy plans for the week of 2016-11-21 ‎11-21-2016 04:26 PM There won't be any rolls this week due to Thanksgiving Holidays. :smileysurprised: ETA: [Resolved 9:35 AM PST, 23 November 2016] Today's rolling restarts are now complete. Intriguing. Wirtz apparently rolled, but we are still on the same server version as before. So I guess sims have been restarted to new servers, without a software update. Nice of you to keep us informed, LL. :smileymad:
  21. Wolf The main issue here is that, so far as I know and can ascertain, there IS nothing QA'd to roll to the RCs so I don't see how there CAN be a roll. :smileyfrustrated:
  22. Caleb (or any Linden that happens to be passing) You announce a No change week last meeting, you announce No Rolls here.... And YET AGAIN the status page is warning us that there WILL be rolls on the RCs tomorrow. What IS it with you folk? Do you EVER sing from the same song book? So, Roll or No Roll, which is it, I for one would like some definitive information, please. PS Or am I just stupid in seeing the Grid Status Page as representing anything reliable? :smileymad:
  23. Abigail Merlin wrote: Bryce, are you paying for the land you use for sailing and flying? if not then you are a guest of those that do and have nothing to demand. Now, your premise is, from one point of view understandable. It is just not realistic. When we sail across Blake Sea, we are almost totally in Linden-owned sims. The sim-crossing issue remains due to the software changes, and it is those, possibly those that permit the prim-bonus, that are causing the trouble. If, in order to sail in SL, we had to own all the sims we sail upon, it would be prohibitively expensive for most, if not all of us. If, in your view we have no say in how these sims behave, we may as well tie up and forget about sailing.:smileysad: That would, in my estimation lose Linden Lab 10% of its clientelle. I doubt that they would be happy at that eventuality.
  24. Callum Perhaps my comments were a little ignorant, but let me just say this: Indeed, since the introduction of Windlight, sim boundary crossings have been rough and some aspects of the issue have been tackled, and with varying degrees of success, overcome. If one sailed in SL there was a finite chance that your avatar would end up ghosted at a sim edge (several of my friends created field-rescue alts for no other purpose than to un-ghost their main accounts), rubber-banding was rife even within sims never mind at borders. As to the folded avatar and handy shoe-and-hair storage :smileyembarrassed: problems... the less said about those the better! No doubt the removal of my scripted attachments would improve matters I cannot argue that case, being an SLlong RLV user. One thing I would take issue with is the attention, or lack of it, that SL developers have shown recently, leading to the re-introduction or significant worsening of the attachment BUGs and sim-sim crossing whether by movement or TP. The evidence of inadequate QA is there for all to see in recent updates. All this is largely irrelevant though. As you rightly say SL is incomparably better than it was in 2008, but then, so it should be! All praise to the determined and self-motivated volunteers in the TPV development corps. (I may have mentioned that before but it bears repeating!) NB: Edited to remove typos!
  25. You may call me unreasonable or naiive, but while it is great that there is an experimental fix being trialled by Firestorm, the root problem remains completely unaddressed server-side. The fact is that communication between servers is simply not good enough, and if the connection to the user is also less than optimal, the problem is made considerably worse. That there are several JIRAs both at FS and LL indicates this is not a single problem, but the wearing of a single attachment on a given point is neither a reliable fix nor is it practicable for many (not me I freely admit) in this day of mesh avatars. It would be a great relief to hear that Linden Lab is making some effort to ameliorate this syndrome; for some it might actually be of more value than a wedge of extra prim capacity for landowners. From what Whirly says there seems to be a serious flaw in the process by which one sim hands off to another. That is the nub of the issue and it is there that effort needs to be concentrated. I am by no means dissing FS, I have used it for years, but the issue is every bit as severe on the LL viewer and thus it is to LL that we must look for a solution.
