  1. /rant on My stay there was lovely. The sad story: Over the last year or so, I managed to get my hands on over 20,000 sq. meters of this great protected waterfront mainland region. It took a while, but it was worth it (or so I thought). All the residents there were long term (including myself), the businesses were light commercial, and lag was almost non-existent. The only land for sale was a single grossly over-priced 4096m parcel. Sure I wanted it, but not for L$100,000. Then, a few weeks ago, a "gentleman" purchased that 4096m so he could move his dance club there. 1600+ members. It runs 24/7. I have pages upon pages of logs where the club was using all 40 av connection slots. Now the sim has been devastated. Even when I actually can get into the region the lag is unbearable, so getting any work done is impossible. I have had to move my residence and business out at great expense. Another resident has abandoned almost 9,000 sq. meters and left. My substantial investment in land there has been transformed from very valuable prime waterfront to almost worthless. Before you tell me that the club can be AR'ed for "Unfair use of region resources", let me assure you that I file one every day. The worst part? LL ignores the AR's. I am out a lot of money because of this fiasco. LL seems to feel that the club on its 4096m parcel is more important than other 61440 sq. meters, not to mention the other long term residents and businesses that were there. I never believed all the stories I had heard in the past that LL selectively enforces the TOS. I see now I was wrong. You would think that since the club is in obvious violation, and since I am paying almost $300USD/month in mainland tier (compared to the club's $25USD/month), that LL would act. But no, LL seems to prefer large dance clubs over the Terms of Service. To add insult to injury they won't even tell me that. They just remain silent, almost like they are hoping I will continue to waste my time filing ARs so they can snicker as they trash can them or place side bets on how long I will continue to fight before giving up. So goodbye Dobinson, it was great while it lasted. /rant off
  2. That's ok, a rollback is better than crashes. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I assume you mean all 3 RC channels are being rolled back.
  3. Down to 10,885 logged in. I think there is light at the end of the tunnel, the web site is back up.

Thusso, running your CPU with hyperthreading turned off is actually better for gaming, since it'll at most use 2-3 threads. I have to disagree with you, because we aren't talking about cores, we are talking about the total load on all the cores, which is what most utilities report when telling you the overall CPU load. Anytime the OS thinks the CPU has twice as many cores as it really has (which happens on any hyper-threaded CPU) then there is no way the reported CPU load could reach 100%. So, with hyper-threading turned off it's easy, 4 cores running 100% = 100% load. But with hyper-threading turned on, 4 cores running 100% looks like 50% to the OS, because the OS expects all *8* cores to be able to deliver 100% each (which of course isn't possible because there really is only 4 cores). Try it yourself. Load a CPU intensive program, like Prime95, so that one instance of Prime95 is running on each core. Even though that completely maxes out your CPU, with hyper-threading turned on you will see most utility programs report approximately 50% CPU load.
  5. There is a CPU at 100% problem with the latest viewers: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-28388 If you can try version 3.2.6 I think it might help with your problem: http://download.cloud.secondlife.com/Viewer-3/SecondLife_3_2_6_248086.dmg
  6. There is nothing new to roll to those RCs. They are running the same code as BlueSteel was last week, and they are going to keep that code. The only difference is they are going to enable the 5000m fly limit for explicitly banned avatars, which does not require a rolling restart.
  7. It isn't the class of the server that is important, it is which version of the code it is running. You can tell by clicking Help --> About in your viewer. For the region I am currently in, this is among the data: Second Life RC BlueSteel 12.03.30.252593 That tells me I am running the Bluesteel Release Channel (RC) code. You should try the teleporter in multiple regions, and make note of which code the sim is running. If you find a pattern, please let us know. Also, the altitude your teleporter is trying to reach doesn't matter. If there is a bug in the server's code caused by the explicit ban height change, it could affect your teleporter no matter what altitudes are in play. Good luck, I know tracking that kind of stuff down can be annoying.

Your Core 2 Quad has 4 cores, but the operating system thinks it has 8. So anytime you see it at 50%, it is actually running at 100%. Anything above 50% is showing the small benefit that hyper-threading gives you, but you will never see it at 100% unless you disable hyper-threading. I have a feeling most who buy today's high powered video cards and expect to see massive improvements are getting dissapointed because it is their CPU, not GPU, that is maxed out. ETA: I get over 150fps from my GTX260 when I first log in (LL's Viewer 3 is all I use), but that is with a super fast Intel i7 @ 3.06Ghz with triple channel 1600 Mhz memory. That shows just how processor bound the viewer is. ETA2: Here is a great website for geeks like us to A/B compare video card specs: http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php
  9. The region it is in would not happen to be on Bluesteel or LeTigre, would it? There was a change made last week to those RC channels that increases the explicit ban height to 5000m. That should not affect teleporters in any way, but I have seen weirder things happen.
  10. If you want mainland, there are all kinds of it for sale that meets your requirements. If you want to rent, check out Coral Reef. It allows both residential and commercial (including clubs). I started my business there, and always liked that sim.
  11. Ok, good. It is normal for the autions to run out, especially after a holiday weekend. It is a manual process to add auctions to the list, and they don't always keep up with it.
  12. Zindra, it sounds like you believe that auctions are the only way to buy mainland. That is not the case. There are 1000's (maybe tens of thousands) of parcels for sale, by both private parties and abandoned parcels for sale by LL. Just go to any mainland continent, open the map, and check the Land Sale box. You will see many yellow areas, all of which are for sale. Hope this helps.
  13. Region crossings are SO much better after Coyot "threw the grid in the air and made it come down in different places" (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Beta_Server_Office_Hours/Minutes/2012-03-08) that I am too ecstatic to notice any minor region problems.
  14. Very likely not. When you get to GPU's as powerful as yours, your CPU is the limiting factor, not the GPU. I have a GTX260, and even with a very powerful Intel i7 it is rare to push the GPU up to 90%+ utilization. Usually it hovers in the 45% range (with pretty much Ultra settings, but with "Lighting and Shadows" turned off). Use a utility program to check your GPU load before deciding.
  15. Sounds like you turned on wireframe. Try pressing Control-Shift-R. That toggles wireframe on and off. Another thing to try is go into Preferences --> Graphics --> Hardware, and uncheck the box Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects. That seems to help systems which are running ATI video graphics cards.
  16. There are security systems out there that are designed to work across multiple estates which can do what you are asking about. Usually they are used by landlords in a rental environment, but could work well in your situation also.
  17. You can call that guessing if you like. However, resetting the scripts in a malfunctioning scripted object is one of the first basic troubleshooting steps.
  18. On the other hand, the cool thing is new residents can begin their first SL experience inside an "Experience". The current LL areas where new residents land can be replaced with Experiences. Once the proper "First Experience" is created and fine-tuned the retention rate should be a lot higher. And, the first SL Experience can also teach them to not accept Experience "requests" from residents they don't know. I personally think that the new permission system combined with providing the tools only to the verified members of the "_Insert Whatever The Program Is Called Here_", that any new griefng caused by the new tools will be quite minimal.
  19. It could be that the creator forgot to include a llResetScript() command when the object is rezzed, which means the script thinks it is still owned by the previous owner. Try resetting the scripts in the object and see what happens.
  20. Yes, that is correct, I believe there will be a separate "Experience" permissions system. But I envisioned it kicking in when you use an enhanced product, not when you purchase it. In other words, let's say I create something that uses the enhanced tools, so it qualifies as an Experience. You buy it, then rez it (or wear it), and at that point the new permissions trigger kicks in and you get a dialog menu asking if it is OK to take control of your avatar. If you answer yes, away you go. If you answer no, nothing happens. To attempt to grief someone using any of the new enhanced tools would trigger the same permissions dialog menu on the person being griefed. Then you can just mute them.
  21. If there is indeed a popup window that asks permission, then the responsibility ultimately lies with the end user. Just as it does when they rez an object from an unknown creator, click Grant on the debit permission window, and subsequently gets all their L$ stolen. I believe that asking permission, in combination with the expanded tools being available only to those who have proven their identity to LL (or maybe even stricter control than that), will minimize the griefing potential.
  22. I think the idea is that any object that uses the enhanced permission system will provide a popup window that allows you to accept or reject the "experience". In that regard it is similar to the way it is now when you get that yellow confirmation window when you rez any object that has a script with a llGiveMoney command in it.
  23. I agree completely, Jenni. Poor LL. No matter where they draw that line, there will be *lots* of unhappy folks. I am glad I am not in their shoes.
  24. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Featured-News/Advanced-Experience-Tools-Preview/ba-p/1420633 Since that is the same post, here is the last paragraph: In parallel to the rollout of these tools, we will be launching a Professional Creators Program. This program will provide members with helpful resources, such as tutorials and exclusive closed betas. More information will become available in the next few months.
  25. I just hope you are right. But with LL's track record anything is possible. If their goal is to move more and more towards LL only created content, and away from the problem-causing grief-ridden resident created content then this is the beginning of that movement. The openness or closed-ness of the "Professional Creators Program" (that is quoted from the last paragraph of Rodvik's blog post) will be very telling.
