Mesh goes gridwide: Create, sell, buy & enjoy all-new things in SL
A group blog by Secondlife in General
As an estate owner with 3DS Max experience, I'm ecstatic about Mesh - way to go LL!!!
Now - check out the newest technology that is going to make polygons obsolete and totally revolutionize video game graphics:

Fantastic news! I think it's great that our new CEO has such a solid background in serious game development. This can only be good for Second Life.
Welcome Rod

I've been considering doing my own advertising in the Real World. Realistically, SL is a virtual world that in and of itself, isn't the attraction. It's about what we've built, the virtual experiences we've created here. Is it really Linden Lab's responsibility to advertise for our businesses?
Comparing IMVU to SL is not really much of a comparison. IMVU is really just a 3D chat room, you can't create there.

I would use this service if I could pay for it in Lindens.

Remember when you first joined SL? For me it was absolutely magical. I learned so much about myself just having an avatar, and sill am really. That was almost 3 years ago and I believe that I would have exactly the same experience if I joined today, maybe even better. SL has improved greatly in the time that I've been in it. Less crashes, better FPS, much better terraforming tools, better viewer and marketplace (not a shared opinion, I know). I like the changes that SL is making and I hope that when they get their infrastructure stabilized they will consider doing some advertising. I can't go anywhere on the web without seeing IMVU ads and I keep hoping to see SL ads as well.
The vast majority of SLers don't read the blogs (thank goodness) or scrutinize the quarterly financial reports. If they did I think the economy would be in a far worse state than it is. The biggest factor in any economy is people's perception of it. In the forums, the sky is always falling, it seems. Every new change is going to be the death of SL, and yet it isn't.

Considering all the dire predictions I've been hearing, all the changes at the Lab, and that the 3rd quarter is seasonally slow - I'd say this looks pretty good. Thanks for the data, it would appear the sky is indeed staying put for now

Something like this happened to me. I had been going along fine with V2.2 beta then a couple days ago it just stopped performing. It felt like lag, I could hardly move. Then I noticed that I couldn't have other programs open any more. With it running even PhotoShop was crazy slow.
I uninstalled it as well as a few other viewers I had still installed, downloaded and installed a fresh copy of 2.2. Magically all was well again. The first time I just patched, but I thnk with this beta 2.2 a fresh full install is a good idea. It seemed to do the trick for me. SL is faster for me now than ever, even faster than it was with 2.2 before it went wonky.
I'm not drawing any conclusions here, this is just my experience. Hope it helps someone.

I love the sidebar too. I have done a lot of building, terraforming while chatting in local and group. I don't see what all the fuss is about. Heck, I usually even have PhotoShop open on the other monitor. Also, on my computer V2 FAR outperforms V1. I found the whole interface great once I got used to it. I could never go back to the old V1 interface now, I'd miss too much. And it looks archaic compared to V2.
I hope that LL doesn't read these forums too seriously as I doubt that they are an accurate representation of their userbase. I do think there are a lot of gripeboi types (opposite of fanboi) who get something out of getting on here and bashing LL anonomously though.

See this just goes to show how much it comes down to just personal preference. I tried Kirsten's S20 and didn't like her sidebar option.

Oh wow, I just installed "Starlight" for the new V2.2 - it's a heck of a lot more than just a skin:
- When defocussed, floater windows, have a near-invisible background
- Sidebar reduced in size, becomes possible to drag, and does not slide the chiclets/buttons along the bottom bar (note: this is not changeable to crop the world view)
- Better formatting of tabbed IM window (tabs larger and no icons in them)
- Reformatted Profile panels for your own and other profiles
- Three additional Preferences panels
- Several UI components made semi-transparent
- "About Land" Button added to Navigation Bar
- Draw Distance slider added to Navigation Bar (between 32 and 512 metres)
- Options added to the menu ('XStreet', 'Grid Status', 'My Uploads', 'My Useful Features')
- "Inventory" Button added to bottom bar
- Resize marker for bottom bar to make it more obvious (from Kirstens Viewer)
- Camera control made smaller than the standard version (similar to the Kirstens Viewer approach but smaller)
- Minor tweaks to the skinning and usability (resizing columns, increasing glow, realigning text etc.)
- Special, lighter Black & Orange look (with several changes to colours and widgets)

Be sure to get the newest one made just for V2.2!In the 3 new preferences settings are things like getting rid of the hover tips, allow multiple viewers, many of the commonly changed Debug Settings, texture details - and a whole lot more!
I'm really loving this!

Antialiasing wasn't working for me on this release, even after rebooting and relogging. I was not liking the jaggies!
I went to my NVIDIA Control Panel and found a setting to "overide application settings" for antialiasing. This works perfectly, SL actually looks even better than it did before. I think my video card does a better job of antialiasing. I'm really glad I discovered this

I've been using Viewer 2 since it came out and, once I learned the new Interface, absolutely loved it. This newest version has a lot of my wish list items and overall I'm very, very happy with it. There is just one problem that I can see - antialiasing no longer works for me. I have an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX video card. And have checked the settings twice now. Antialiasing worked before but now I have jagged edges around everything.
Anyone else seeing this?

I like the idea of games within SL. I think this is a great idea that could inspire others to create even more indepth games. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming enhanced NPC tools as I have an idea in mind myself for an inworld game that I'm anxious to get started on. In the meantimes I'll definitely give this a try.
