  1. I read the link in the OP. Looks like the Estate Manager has to enable the feature and then the return process is manual. I'd love to see this enabled on mainland. Although it would be kind of nice to have this work with auto-return, I can see some downsides to that: how do you allow one neighbor to overhang but not another? what if you don't care about small (<0.5m or whatever) overhangs? what about someone who rezzes something big on their land that overhangs but just needs a minute or so to position it? There's probably other things, but that's just off the top of my head. It would be nice if you could right-click something and find out if something is returnable or not before actually returning it. It would be good for learning how well the system works. How does it work for the known bugs? Is it precise right down to the millimeter? I hope this gets enabled on the mainland soon.
  2. These are the clouds that float around 200 meters or so not the ones painted on the infinitely high sky. I've looked up some info but the menu options seem to have changed. I can't find the Advanced Sky Editor.
  3. If you go the route of pulling your tier from the group, make sure you update your tier on your dashboard: First, pull your tier from the group Then, browse to http://secondlife.com Log in and you should see your dashboard On the left, expand Land Manager Click Land Use Fees Scroll down, check the numbers, and see if you go down any tier levels If you can, don't forget to click Save Changes You be billed at the old tier level for your current billing cycle. It will be at the new level the next billing cycle.
  4. Yes, there's runways 18/36. North end is at Suisun (140, 254, 254) which is the landmark I use help line myself up for landing. I have to make improvements to markings and lighting which I'll do when I can get time. The south end of the runway is just runway. So, if you veer off, you'll fall off, LOL. The north end is wider.
  5. The runway is due North/South and is 8 meters wide and 128 meters long. Most of the land adjacent to the runway is owned by neighbors.
  6. I used to have a vehicle rez area. I never had any problems with it. I got rid of it as part of dumping a major chunk of my land. I used 60 minutes for auto-return. Since I had a lot of land, I usually had over 1000 prims free but that’s overkill. I’d say keeping 100 prims free would be good since that should allow up to 3 physical vehicles to be rezzed. And, of course, like you know, keep build, object entry, and scripts enabled for everyone. I still have the floating airport (what I call Hugsy Penguin Skyport) but it’s much smaller now. I have a landmark set at the end of Runway 18. When I come in to land, I have the landmark shown on the map. That shows a red beam in-world where the bottom of the beam is at the surface of the runway. I get myself lined up going due south, heading straight for the beam, and flying just above where it stops. When I do it right, I’m lined up perfectly on the runway when it finally rezzes.
  7. From http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Beginning-land-owner-FAQ/ta-p/700035#Section_..7.1 "Any tier beyond the first full region is assigned in half-region increments at a rate of US$97.50 per half region."
  8. All prices lowered to L$0.9/m². Last price reduction before I abandon it (soon!). If you wait, you'll pay more. 13. Wow, I really need to lurk more. The ship looks like a lot of fun and would fit in nicely at my skyport. I'd like one if you don't mind. Thanks!
  14. Rabid Cheetah wrote: One thing I don't get is why anyone would put up an adfarm in the first place. Ad farms are a form of extortion meant for the surrounding landowners. Basically, "if you want to get rid of the junk that has been made to be as ugly and obnoxious as possible, pay me 100 times what the land is worth to clean it up."
  15. What viewer are you using? If it's the latest official viewer from Linden Lab, then it's the "V2" viewer. If so, stand in the middle of your house and select "World" --> "Place Profile" --> "About Land" from the menu. Check the name/description and whatever else to make sure you've actually selected the land for your Linden home. When you really do have your land selected, the Abandon Land button will be available.
  16. It would be great if ban lines (and other parcel properties that disrupt vehicles) would be displayed on the map/mini-map. Not all road-side parcels with ban lines are disruptive, in particular, when the road is properly centered on the Linden land and has a barrier on either side (assuming you're driving). I have seen a case, however, where the Linden road encroached on a resident's property and that resident had ban lines up (ban lines extending onto the road) even though there was absolutely nothing on their land. Hitting that and losing my vehicle sure did feel like griefing.

  18. Melita Magic wrote: Yes, I am. I have yet to see any abandoned land that is for sale in fact, or with anything but 0 in the auto return. Whether it was abandoned before or after the policy, I don't know. But I think at least one was after. I've read the article in the past but I admit I don't really pay attention to abandon dates. I heard those can be faked? I bet the 0 auto-return land you're seeing was abandoned before this policy. There's lots of that still around. Try calling up the map, add the Land Sale layer, and click around looking for price tags that say "Abandoned Land - For Sale" with the price and size the same number. I just did this at least a couple of dozen times. One of two things happened. Either the land had already been purchased or the land was owned by Governor Linden, the group was Maintenance, and the auto-return was 5 minutes. It's easier to find if you focus on land that looks about 2048m² or less and doesn't border any roads or water. Regarding faked dates, it might be fake in the name/description for pre-policy abandoned land, however, I don't think it's possible to fake the "Claimed:" date in the About Land dialog.

All of the abandoned land I have seen has auto return set to zero. Auction land has auto return set to five minutes. Announcing an Easier Way to Purchase Abandoned Mainland Property Prior to this (~April 21), abandoned land had auto-return automatically set to zero. After this, when you abandon land Governor Linden takes ownership, auto-return is set to 0, and it's set for sale back to you for L$1 per m². After 24 hours, all prims on the land are returned to you, the land is set for sale to anyone, and auto-return is set to 5 minutes. Are you seeing lots of land that was abandoned after this policy but still has 0 auto-return? If so, that would be a bug in the system.
  20. Melita Magic wrote: This has been abandoned at least for some weeks If the land was abandoned around April 21st or earlier (Announcing an Easier Way to Purchase Abandoned Mainland Property) then it wouldn't have been set for sale under this new policy. If it was abandoned afterwards, then the system failed in this case. The way the system is supposed to work and did work for me just recently is this. You abandon land. Governor Linden takes ownership, auto-return is set to 0, and it's set for sale back to you for L$1 per m². After 24 hours, all prims on the land are returned to you, the land is set for sale to anyone, and auto-return is set to 5 minutes.

(Of course this is already possible with explicit exclusion lists). I think there should be some level where overflight is guaranteed. Doesn't have to be huge. I would suggest 1000-1200. I think there would still be a lot of open space to fly around in. But then again, I’m sure people would just do the easy thing and set the privacy zone to max extents. Perhaps what would be better is one privacy zone with a max extent of 1024 meters and a button to quickly set it to around your current position (512 meters above and below). I’m not too keen on a no-build zone for land owners although I do admit that when max build height was 768 meters it was nice to pop up to around 900 meters and do fast cross-continental flights.
  22. I believe that auto-return is automatically set to zero when land is abandoned. I don't know if that changed in this newer abandoned-land-goes-straight-to-for-sale system. Getting rid of junk on abandoned land due to 0 auto-return is trivial. Just submit a ticket: What type of problem are you having? – Land & Region Land & Region – Linden Lab owner Parcel Issues Where is the Linden-owned Parcel that is having the issue? – Go to land and copy & paste SLURL SLURL or Parcel Coordinates – paste SLURL again Please describe the issue. – Abandoned land has junk on it and needs auto-return set. It should be cleaned up in a few business days. Well, that's always been my experience.
  23. Whenever these threads appear, they often times devolve into a Land Owner vs Explorer battle. I prefer to wear both hats and think Linden Lab should give land owners better tools to specify privacy and explorers better awareness of privacy settings. For land owners, allow privacy zones where you set a bottom and top altitude and everything in-between is considered private. You could set the bottom to 0 and top to 4096 for full coverage. You could also set a privacy zone in the sky around your personal skybox home but keep the ground open for your store customers. It would update how ban lines, white lists, and black lists work. For explorers, the privacy zone would show on the mini-map. If you are at or near the level of a privacy zone it would show in a special color. If you're above or below, it either wouldn't show or be filled will little up or down arrows (similar to the up/down arrow the green dot turns into for nearby avatars). It would also be nice if the mini-map showed parcel full and no object entry. The onus would be on land owners to setup their privacy settings correctly and then on explorers to pay attention to them.
  24. For someone who wants 2048m² of land for their build, here's how your rental stacks up against Linden Lab's deal: Your Rental: Land Size: 2048m² Prim Allocation: 400 prims Rent L$: L$3000/month (L$36000/year) Total Cost US$: US$12/month (US$144/year) m²/US$/year: ~14.2 prims/US$/year: ~2.8 Linden Lab Premium Account: Land Size: 2048m² + 512m² (2560m²) Prim Allocation: 468 prims + 117 prims (585 prims) Tier Fee: US$15/month (US$180/year) Premium Account Fee: US$72/year Weekly Stipend L$: L$300/week (L$15600/year) Weekly Stipend US$: US$1.20/week (US$62.40/year) Total Cost US$: US$18.80/month (US$189.60/year) m²/US$/year: ~13.5 prims/US$/year: ~3.1 The premium account numbers do not include the 10% bonus for group land which would sweeten the deal a bit. The premium account numbers do not include premium account fees for quarterly or monthly which would sour the deal a bit. The premium account numbers do not include the upfront cost of buying the land from the current owner which would sour the deal a bit for the first year. There was no indication of any upfront cost for the rental. The Linden dollar to U.S. dollar conversion is done at the current rate according to the LindeX. In order to get the numbers indicated for the LL deal, you have to do two things: stick with it for the full year and cash out your stipend without spending any of it. Because the two aren't exactly the same in land size and prim allocation, I calculated the square meters per annual U.S. dollar (m²/US$/year) and the prims per annual U.S. dollar (prims/US$/year) for each. Your rental gives you more square meters of land per annual U.S. dollar. LL gives more prims per annual U.S. dollar. It looks to me like you've got a better deal, however, the one offered by LL isn't that much worse. Of coarse there's a lot of things to consider (besides out-of-pocket expense) when deciding between renting and buying.

If you are building in the sky at an altitude away from other builds and really only want to overhang a little bit (a meter or so?) then I would think most people would oblige. But if they say "no", then you need to keep your stuff on your own land.
