  1. Some general thoughts regarding the topics in this thread: Don't rez anything on the mainland that you don't want everyone to see. You can do your best to hide things in the air, camouflage things, create distractions, instantly eject anyone who enters your land, but that won't change the fact someone only needs to get within draw distance to see your objects. If you want the maximum privacy available in SL, you need to buy a private island and lock it down so that only you and your friends have access. Instantly ejecting anyone who enters your land (on mainland) is IMO a *bad* way of hiding your stuff. It will simply make people curious to see what you're hiding. People flying/sailing/driving through other people's land (on mainland) and getting instantly dumped by a security script has been a point of contention ever since people have been flying/sailing/driving. This includes both going straight through the center of someone's land and accidentally nipping across the corner of their land. Back in the day when the Lindens were more communicative with residents, they recommended a 10 second delay (still ridiculously short but better than nothing). I remember seeing people post that they had security orbs removed for instantly ejecting anyone. I own land on the mainland and demand the right to control access to it. I completely understand land owner's frustrations with seemingly being told that they can't control who's on their land. I also fly/sail/drive across the mainland. If I get instantly ejected by a security script, there's a good chance I'll AR it. This is due to the fact that flying/sailing/driving are perfectly legal TOS-wise and it's impossible for me to know there's a security script in use. If it instantly ejects everyone, I consider that harassment. I've been ejected by security scripts various times over the years. Not once was I ever trying to cause someone grief. Not once was anyone actually home at the time. When unchecking “Avatars on other parcels can see and chat with avatars on this parcel” be aware that all they have to do is, well, move onto your parcel. This includes being up in the air and moving over, and therefore above (aka “on”), your parcel. Unchecking “Allow Public Access” doesn't really help much. That just bans people to about 50m above ground level. You'd have to combine it with a security script and my thoughts on that are above. Or actively monitor who's over your land and manually eject/blacklist them. If I had my way, mainland parcel privacy would be completely revamped. One general concept would be that people would be able to mark their land private (which may include preventing access, avatar visibility, chat visibility, and perhaps even prim visibility). That land would then be displayable on the map/mini-map. Then flyers/sailors/drivers could easily avoid private areas.

A couple of other choices would be to rank by distance and time or to periodically wipe the scores. 16 wrote: maybe the owners can honour Hugsy. by making a little mini diamond/platinum cup and put on the cabinet next to the big cups. can say on it that Hugsy was the inaugural winner of the Starchild drivers rally. be really nice if they done that i think :matte-motes-big-grin-squint: That would be cute, but unnecessary.
  3. Phil Deakins wrote: Ooo. I see that Hugsy has retaken the gold cup without saying anything. Sneaky That's odd. I haven't been back to Dali since I posted that score. :matte-motes-confused:
  4. Congratulations Phil! :matte-motes-big-grin: And to you too 16! :matte-motes-big-grin: Who else wants to take on the challenge? It looks like the gold is always up for grabs! :matte-motes-wink:
  5. Triple Peccable wrote: Actually, you have all that in the Explorer's HUD also. When you are un-zoomed, the black dividing lines between the squares tell if you are towards the middle or towards the edge, because they turn red when you get close to the edge (you can set how close before they turn red with the menu options). Yes, but I want to know how close I am to the edge of the little 4m x 4m block that I'm currently in. Triple Peccable wrote: When you are zoomed in, your location in that square *is* shown, assuming you are in the square you zoomed into. There is no need to rescan as you move, all the data is already there. Yes, and when you move outside the zoomed-in area you have to click to zoom out and then click again to zoom into the new area you're in. I don't want to do that. I want it to track along with me always looking at what's ahead. Here's a picture to illustrate: On the left, I'm just at the entrance to the narrow passage way. On top, your HUD is showing a broader area which is better but it's also making it look like I'm heading straight into the ban lines. On the bottom, my HUD is showing that I'm actually on the far edge of the 4m x 4m block and heading in a good direction. This is why I want to know exactly where I am in the 4m x 4m block. On the right, I've moved into the passage way. On top, I've reached the edge of the zoomed in area. I now have to stop, zoom out, and zoom into the next area. On the bottom, I can still see what's up ahead without clicking. This is why I want it to track along with me. That's about as clear as I can explain it. I created my HUD the way that it is because that's *exactly* the way I want it to work. It's used in addition to yours in the specific situations where I need it.
  6. Yeah, the bottom hud was really just redundant. I was refamiliarizing myself with it. I did play with all the options when I bought yours. I should have turned on the purple privacy squares but didn't think to do that. As for the zoom-in mode, yours works well but doesn't work exactly the way I want it to. I wanted something that showed my position within the 4x4 block so that I know if I'm towards the middle or towards the edge. Also, I wanted something that always kept my position towards the bottom. As I move, it rescans to always show what's up ahead.

Sorry Hugsy! :smileywink: No problem! :matte-motes-big-grin-wink: No secret at all. Your hud is pretty much standard equipment anytime I go on long driving, flying, or sailing excursions.

Thanks for the trophy! :matte-motes-big-grin: I don't think the aids should be disallowed though. They're like a time saver. The alternative would be to go very slow checking each and every parcel's about land properties.
  9. Triple Peccable wrote: Hugsy Penguin wrote: I picked up a hitch-hiker along the way but lost him on a semi-botched region crossing that also fouled up my camera and sit position. That was almost certainly caused by crossing into or out of a parcel that was set to "Private" while crossing a sim border. That will mess up your camera and sit animation every time. Be sure you have the option turned on in your ban line HUD that shows where those private areas near sim borders are(they show as purple). They need to be avoided almost as much as ban lines. Yeah, I should be more careful about that. Even though I have the tools, I should be more careful to actually pay attention to them! :matte-motes-bashful-cute-2:
  10. Phil Deakins wrote: What are those disc displays on the left of your screen? The middle one is obviously a compas but what are the other two? The top and bottom displays are huds for detecting ban lines. You can find them by searching the marketplace. Basically, you just stay away from the red areas. The middle one is my own creation. When subdividing land, you can only do so along 4m x 4m blocks. Each block on that hud represents a 4x4 block in-world. My position is always shown in the bottom middle block. It scans my position, two blocks to the left, two blocks to the right, and four rows of five blocks ahead. For example, if I'm facing between 45 degrees and 135 degrees, then east will be considered ahead. Therefore, my position, two blocks north, two blocks south, and four rows of five blocks east are scanned. Green is Linden owned land. Yellow is non-Linden owned land. Gray is outside the sim. The position of the arrow shows where I am within the 4x4 block. It was designed specifically for very slow travel through narrow Linden waterways to avoid other people's land which may contain ban lines or security orbs.

Hugsy (: is way cool \o/ That's funny! :matte-motes-big-grin-squint: You are too kind. I really doubt that will happen. :matte-motes-silly:
  12. I tried again tonight taking almost the same route as the last time. I went a little different way once I got close to help avoid ban lines better. I picked up a hitch-hiker along the way but lost him on a semi-botched region crossing that also fouled up my camera and sit position. Final distanced reached was 12340.81 meters.
  13. To anyone keeping track, the top spot had been taken over by Jacco Rodeyn with a distance of 10305.62. Then, I gave it a few more tries and made it as far as Hundertwasser with a distance of 11998.95. That's one sim north of Dali. The top spot is still up for grabs. Watch out for those ban lines! :matte-motes-sunglasses-2:
  14. Hey man! The ship looks great. Would you mind tossing one my way? Thanks! :matte-motes-big-grin:
  15. Limonella Sorbet wrote: I don't care what size anyone else thinks my avatar should be. My avatar is not realistic any more than Barbie is. My avatar looks great in her Barbie clothes and that is all I care about. If someone else does not like it they don't have to look. We all know what real people look like! We all know they come in all shapes sizes heights & weights. If people want to ignore real measurements whether it's long arms long legs short arms short legs wide hips whatever that is their perogative. People need to know their opinion is just THEIR opinion & is not worth as much to others as they think! NOBODY is suggesting otherwise. Big boobs or big butts aren't really the issue here. It's avatar height and camera placement. The defaults cause people to make their avatars bigger than average humans and buildings, furniture, and whatnot bigger than real life. There are those who wish to have wildly out of proportion body parts. Nothing wrong with that. There are those who wish to have proportional body parts. Nothing wrong with that either. What's being proposed is that people understand their proportions in relation to real life. Default avatar height and camera position has caused weird proportions in SL to be the norm. Some would like realistic proportions to be the norm. I see nothing wrong with that.
  16. Personally, I would love to see real-life proportions (with suitable camera placement) for avatars and everything else become the norm in SL. You can fit more stuff on the same amount of land. Plus, when you're building something, you won't have to "eyeball" the size of the thing to get it right. There's just all kinds of goodness to it. This can be done be educating people on how out of proportion their avatars are. Then teach them how to scale their avatars properly. NONE of this should be forced on anyone. It's just educating people on scale and letting them decide whether they want to live a 1:1 life or a 1:1.3 life.
  17. It sounds to me like you're referring to the classic "volumetric clouds" that used to float around 200 meters. Here's a picture of runway 27 at my skyport from a couple of years ago (it's different now) that shows what I mean. I placed my skyport there on purpose for the effect of floating on the clouds. I asked about them a while ago and it seems they're gone for good: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Everything-Else/How-do-I-turn-on-the-classic-volumetric-clouds-I-m-running-SL-3/qaq-p/1120159 I liked them and wish they didn't go away.
  18. I'm not sure what you mean by UI. Here's a script that will get you some parcel details. It is derived from the script at http://lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=llGetParcelDetails I'm no expert in SL parcel IDs. Annoyingly, the ID returned by this script, for me, is different than the ID display by Firestorm in About Land. I don't know why. default { state_entry() { llSay(0, "Touch Me!"); } touch_start(integer total_number) { // Grab Parcel Info list lstParcelDetails = llGetParcelDetails(llGetPos(), [PARCEL_DETAILS_NAME, PARCEL_DETAILS_DESC, PARCEL_DETAILS_OWNER, PARCEL_DETAILS_GROUP, PARCEL_DETAILS_AREA, PARCEL_DETAILS_ID]); // Set Parcel Variables string ParcelName = llList2String(lstParcelDetails, 0); // Parcel's Name (63 Characters Max) string ParcelDesc = llList2String(lstParcelDetails, 1); // Parcels Description (127 Characters Max) key ParcelOwner = llList2Key(lstParcelDetails, 2); // Parcel Owners Key (AV Or Group Key If Group Owned) key ParcelGroup = llList2Key(lstParcelDetails, 3); // Parcel's Group Key (NULL_KEY Unless Group Set Or Owned By Group) integer ParcelArea = llList2Integer(lstParcelDetails, 4); // Parcel's Size (In Meters Squared. ie: 512, 1024...) key ParcelID = llList2Key(lstParcelDetails, 5); // Put Your Code Here llOwnerSay("Parcel Name = " + ParcelName); llOwnerSay("Parcel Description = " + ParcelDesc); llOwnerSay("Parcel Owner = " + (string)ParcelOwner); llOwnerSay("Parcel Group = " + (string)ParcelGroup); llOwnerSay("Parcel Area = " + (string)ParcelArea + " square meters"); llOwnerSay("Parcel ID = " + (string)ParcelID); } }
  19. Our profiles looked just like in the picture. You could rate people up or down. Of course children couldn't play nice with their toys so mommy and daddy Linden had to take them away: "On April 13 [2007], Linden Lab announced the eventual removal of the profile rating system, which was used for social reputation but also prone to being abused and misunderstood." http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/History_of_Second_Life#2007
  20. Czari Zenovka wrote: How did one go about collecting them? Were they rezzed in world and were found like in a scavenger hunt or did you have to find the Linden and ask them for one? Fascinating! I totally forget how I found out about the cards. It was probably from reading the forums at the time or maybe an announcement, I don't know. Anyway, I do recall that there were at least three ways to get a card: Find an in-world kiosk and click on it. It would give you a card. I think it was random. I'm sure you couldn't just keep clicking to get more cards. Maybe once a day or something. They only had a limited supply and had to be replenished. Part of the fun was finding the kiosks (the mainland was much smaller then). I think you were supposed to find them on your own, but I'm sure I got tips from the forums. I kept a notecard with the locations of kiosks I had found. Because of this thread, I went back to all those locations. It seems to me that the one in the Misso region is the only one left. It's, of course, empty. Yes, if you came across a Linden in-world, you could ask them for their swap card. During the "hay day" of swap cards, the Linden would know what you're talking about and give you one. The only time I recall asking a Linden for their swap card, they didn't know what I meant and gave me their calling card. I think they were a new Linden, didn't have a swap card. Trade cards with other people. They're no copy and no modify, but you can transfer them. I'm also under the impression that some were harder to obtain than others.
  21. Yes! I remember collecting these. :matte-motes-sunglasses-1: Looking at the properties of the cards, I was collecting them around August 2005. If I added everything up correctly, here's my collection: 2x Andrew 4x Babbage 4x Blue Brent Bub 3x Char Chris Content 2x Jack Jeff Jeska Jill Jim 3x Lee Michael Mick Nigel 2x Nova 3x Pathfinder Phoenix Rheya Uncle 2x Vektor West 3 I think there were a lot more to get so I'm sure there are those with a larger collection. I wish they still did this, they were fun to collect. BTW, these aren't calling cards. These are collectable prims in the style of baseball trading cards. On the one side is the Linden's profile and the other is the SL logo and screenshot.

I agree that one of those 12s is the day. I agree that one of those 12s is the month. I agree that one of those 12s is the year but only because most people will assume '12' is the last two digits of the year. The times 12.12.12 or 12/12/12 occurs can be described as: ..., 1612, 1712, 1812 December 12, 1912 December 12, 2012 December 12, 2112 2212. 2312, 2412, 2512, ... Edited to add: Ok, actually, if you're going to truncate the year to two digits, the next time the year, month, and day are the same number will occur on January 1, 2101.
  23. Years ago I created a separate e-mail address to use for my SL avatar. LL has my main e-mail because it's the one I check on a regular basis. The separate one is the one I use for third-party forums, flickr, and anything else, such as this, that comes along. I understand your concern but I think if you use a separate or throw-away e-mail, there's nothing to worry about.
  24. Admission: I didn't read all 6 pages of this thread. Example use of 'they' as singular: “I have this one friend and they think I'm correct.” I believe the use of the word 'they' is grammatically incorrect in that statement. I think the English language should evolve to make that use correct. We already have precedent with the word 'you'.
