  1. Do you have a permanent place or are you a wanderer? Permanent, although the style changes as I get bored with it and feel like making changes. Did you get a home as soon as you started or did you wait? I think I bought my first plot of land maybe a couple of weeks after I started. I remember prefab shopping very early on. Skybox or ground? Own or rent? Mainland or island? Roommates? Ground. Own. Mainland. No roomates. What is your prim allotment to the parts of your home? Like 50% on the house, 20% on furniture, etc. I have more going on at my land that just the house so I just try to keep the house prims to a minimum. I don't really allocate a specific percentage. What do you do in your house? It's the obvious place to go when "TPing home". Change clothes. Unpack boxes. Play with games and gadgets that I bought. Some scripting. Some building. A place to be in-world when switched to a different window IRL. Things of that nature. Do you recommend homeowning? If it's something that someone expresses an interest in and it's something they can afford, then, yes, I would encourage them to go ahead and get a home. Does it make you stay in SL? I don't think not being able to have a home in SL would make me leave.
  2. To drive a car, the controls are usually: up arrow key – go forward down arrow key – brake then go in reverse right arrow key – turn right left arrow key – turn left page up key – change gears up page down key – change gears down I'd say sit in the car. Make sure you're in the driver's seat (sometimes I've been put in the passenger's seat). Press the up arrow key. If you don't move, try pressing the page up key to shift into drive then press the up arrow key. If that doesn't work you'll have to read the instructions. If clicking the car brings up a menu, see if it gives you an instruction notecard. Otherwise, look in the box the car came in. Otherwise, right-click and open the car itself to see if instructions are there. If all else fails, contact the maker.
  3. It sounds to me like you need to get a better handling vehicle. The key to a good drive is speed – in particular, a slow speed. There are too many vehicle makers who know how to make a pretty vehicle but they don't know how to script it. Or they tune it thinking everyone wants to race on a single sim track. Off the top of my head, anything by ACCC motors should be good. Also, anything by Yevad Doobie should be good too. I recently bought the Thunder from Pro Street and it's very drivable (except 6th gear and above – it's like the jump from impulse to warp speed, LOL). Never spend a lot of money on a vehicle if you can't test drive it first.
  4. I won't be able to make this cruise but I see you're stopping at Nassau. The wife and I honeymooned on a cruise and that was one of our stops. If they still have it, I recommend the dolphin encounter at the Atlantis resort. We got to touch/kiss the dolphin and got our pictures taken with it. Plus the resort has a very cool “lazy” river and some wicked water slides. The only downfall is that the walkways go every which way and it gets confusing, LOL.
  5. MiniJenny wrote: I get confused on those. I don't know which way is going to be the front or back of the build. Only one that I have found that had a texture on the box that indicates which way you need to position the box so you know which is going to be the front or back. Sometimes I rez the build in a sandbox first to see which way it's going to go.
  6. Catwyn wrote: TO ask the silly question.... What's a "hunt"? Like 16 said, it's not a silly question at all. Since I already typed this out... A hunt is an event where items are hidden and you have to find them. The items are normally hidden in stores and contain freebies. The idea is to get you into the store so you hopefully look around and buy something. The hunts usually have a theme. They'll have start and end dates (usually about a month long). When you find out about a hunt, you'll need to find out what thing you need to find (a coin, a flaming arrow, ...). Usually looking at the poster will tell you. You'll need to get the hunt's blog page to get the list of stores and clues to where the item is hidden. They usually have a group to join as well. You can find hunts via the in-world search or here: http://slhunts.wordpress.com/ MadPea has the interesting hunt I was talking about in my earlier post in this thread: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/MadPea%20Base/154/107/3501
  7. I haven't done too many hunts, but it seems to me that most are just a list of stores and clues on some blog. They may be numbered but there's no push to actually find the items in that order. Figuring out the clue can be interesting but otherwise these hunts, to me, are “meh”. It's just stores giving away freebies but instead of putting it out in the open they make you work a bit for it. The one hunt I finished recently was more interesting even if it was just a mini-hunt (15 items). There was a better developed story and the clues were very well thought out. You got a HUD and when you found the item a piece of a map would appear. When the map is complete, you go to one last location to get all the gifts. This was like going on a little adventure and MUCH more fun than the typical freebie scarfing. As far as the importance having to find things in order, I haven't seen that enforced. I think if it's important to the hunt creator then they should at least say so. Make it clear in the notecard. If it's really important then they should enforce it via a HUD or some such.
  8. Richie Kanto wrote: Yes... and let's add there should be a law against putting trash on a parcel next to someone's nice build (and don't tell me about one man's trash is another's treasure... we've all seen how people ruin land value just so someone will buy them off the parcel). I think the better way to handle this is to add derendering options. I'd like to derender by object, parcel, and owner. I'd like a sensible GUI to show me what's derendered and easy options for rerendering. Richie Kanto wrote: There should be a law against LL taking weeks or even months to respond to tickets asking that objects overhanging your land are removed when the other land owner refuses to even respond to nice requests to do so (or is no longer around in SL). You can return objects that are overhanging on your land even if the root prim is not centered on your land. This was added earlier this year.
  9. If you're going to tier down by keeping some land and getting rid of the rest, you'd want to sell what you're getting rid of. If you end up having to abandon it instead, I suppose there's various way you could go about that. You could abandon it as all one piece. You could split it into as-useful-as-you-can-get parcels and abandon each. You could split it into as-least-useful-as-you-can-get parcels and abandon each. Or, you could split it all up in 16s and abandon each. What you're describing seems like a blend of the least-useful option and the all-16s option. This is curious because the least-useful option seems like it could work to keep people away but the all-16s option seems to invite people to buy the micro parcels (perhaps just one and then something ugly gets put there). I could see someone cutting everything up into 16s before abandoning thinking they're being the “nice guy”. The thought is this: with everything cut into 16s, the next buyer can buy exactly which bits of the abandoned land that they want right now. They won't have to ask LL to recut the land (and possibly be denied). This is assuming the buyer(s) will want to use the land in a community conscience way so it's probably a bad idea.
  10. I know you've got it solved. But, for future reference and for anyone just curious, all you need to do is chat "id off" (without the quotes) to local chat and the ID goes away.
  11. In the LL viewer, you can go to World --> My land holdings... to bring up the My Land dialog. A list at the top will show the parcels that are owned by you. There are options for teleporting and mapping. At the bottom, it will show contributions to groups. You can sort by area to float groups you're contributing to to the top. From there you can double-click the group to show its properties. Then, expand Land/Assets to see where the land is.
  12. I drove it down my 152m runway wearing 2 different HUDs showing speed in KPH. I was able to get up to 68 KPH before running off the end of the runway. I tried a couple of drag strips found in search and couldn't get more than a few tenths of a KPH more. Top speed may be more but you'll need a really long straight flat stretch to get it. There doesn't appear to be any gears. Handling is pretty bad. It seems to me that it was designed for Racers Gulch. It does ok there but takes practice. It's difficult to manuever if you get stuck. I've had to use edit mode. This is NOT a touring vehicle. It's useless for exploring the roads on the continents. The vehicle is made from mesh.
  13. On the Sansara continent in and near the snow regions, the water level is above 20m. There are dams that transition the water from the lower level to the higher level. The dam in Ganymede transitions the water from 20m to 35m and the one in Tethys transitions the water from 35m to 62m. The multi-region lake to the east of the snow land has water set to 80m (example: Bettger).
  14. I just tried it now with Firestorm v4.1.1.28744 and it worked fine. The only suggestion I have is to rebuild the bridge if you haven't already done so: Avatar --> Avatar Health --> Recreate LSL Bridge
  15. Sorry to hear about your frustrations finding a place to build. Please understand there are sandboxes you can go to which will allow you to build. We just have to get you there. You won't be able to live there. Sandboxes are intended to let people build and then take their stuff when their done – not to be lived on. If you don't take your objects yourself, they'll eventually be automatically returned. The Destination Guide also has sandboxes. Because I have my own land to build on, I'm not familiar with a good public sandbox. However, I know the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives is a long established place in SL and it has a G-rated sandbox: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Natoma/210/164/27 If you need an M or A-rated sandbox, those can be found too. Although I don't have much experience renting land, I believe it involves either paying a rental box which then opens the land to you or, if on a private estate, you right-click the ground and “buy” it. The land isn't given to you as an object; it's just made available to you. I suppose it's possible you were given some sort of resource kit when renting, but that's not the land itself. Do you remember where you were when you rented the land? Do you remember the name of the region and can you get back there? Do you know who you rented the land from?
  16. Aditi (a.k.a, the preview or beta grid) is kind of like Vegas. What happens in Aditi stays in Aditi. It's a good place to go to upload meshes to see how they'll look in-world and check the land impact. However, you won't be able to sell those meshes on the Marketplace (there's a beta marketplace, but that's not going to help you). In order to sell on the Marketplace, you'll have to log into Agni (a.k.a., the main grid). Then you can upload it, texture it, script it, set it's permissions, and do whatever else you need to do it. Once it's ready, you can place it for sale on the Marketplace by following the Merchant Help Wiki: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Selling-in-the-Marketplace/ta-p/700193 If you need a place to rez your mesh, you can go to a public sandbox. Bring up the Second Life Search window by clicking the magnifying glass icon or by pressing Ctrl-F. Type “public sandbox” (without the quotes), select Places from the dropdown, and then click the Search button. You should be able to use any of the top entries listed. I'm not sure what you mean by “I have bought a rented land and it says it is delivered in my objects folder”. Can you elaborate on this?
  17. It's free and you can upload mesh however it seems you have to take the Mesh quiz again. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Preview_Grid
  18. The only difference between a theist and an atheist is one holds religious beliefs and the other does not. Beyond that, people are the same. Tall/short, smart/dumb, and pontificator/introvert are ways to describe anyone regardless of their religious beliefs (or lack thereof). When Melita quoted you, she quoted "We do not push our (lack of) faith upon others." That's quite different than “forced by atheists to live by atheist rules and abandon their practices.” In the first quote, all that's need to push faith (or lack thereof) on others is to start preaching to people. While certainly not all atheists do, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of atheists who have created books, blogs, videos, and even comedic routines that blast the religious and are a veiled (if not open) attempt to convert people to atheism. The second quote is a stronger statement where people are literally forced to give up their religion. Since atheists don't seem to mind bringing up the Crusades as an example of how religion is bad, it's unfair to demand recent examples of forced atheism. It's no matter though. Forced/state atheism didn't die with the Soviet Union. I'm no expert on the subject or these countries, but I'm pretty sure that places like China, North Korea, Cuba, and perhaps some others are *very* unfriendly towards the religious. Oh, these countries may have some churches but that doesn't mean people are truly free to practice their religion without any consequences.
  19. I remember that thread: :-) Curiouser and curiouser
  20. I went premium 7 years ago because I wanted to have land where I could build things and have a "permanent" presence. It was also nice to have a home to change outfits instead of hiding at the bottom of the sea or flying off to some land far away from others. I wanted to do this on the mainland. While private estates are generally beautifully done and there are many reputable resident landlords, I just feel more comfortable handing rent over to a company with a brick-and-mortar building I could visit than to another resident. Plus the mainland is a much larger contiguous block of regions. I remain premium because I still want that “permanent” presence and because I'm grandfathered in at L$500 per week, the stipend pays for the membership (but not the tier). ETA: The premium sandboxes we have now are a really nice bonus.
  21. I think weather in SL would be a great idea. As mentioned, there would need to be a way to cancel the weather inside buildings. Also, there should be settings to control what weather you see - region defaults or your own weather (kind of like how you can control the sun position).
  22. That sounds like a good suggestion. Perhaps we could go to anyone's http://my.secondlife.com/RESIDENT_NAME page and pay them from there. In the mean time, if you want to transfer money between an alt and a main, you can do it with a piggy bank script. You'll still have to log in-world, but it can save logging in your alt to do nothing other than to pay your main.
  23. This thread is relevant to my interests. I'd like to use llStartAnimation() with llSetKeyframedMotion(). More specifically, I'd like have my avatar sit on an object but then start an animation so it looks like I'm still standing. Then I click the object and moves smoothly to another spot while simultaneously switching to the walk animation. When it arrives, I want to stop the walk and return to standing. This is part of a larger project. I have it working llSetPos() but was hoping to get smoother motion. With a test script/object, when sitting on the object, it moves but no "stand" or "walk" animation plays and there's no error message. If I'm not sitting on the object, then I walk while it's moving, but, of coarse, I'm not moving along with it. I what I'm trying to do not possible with key framed motion?
  24. I found your land and those objects. It looks like the creator and owner are the same. In cases where they're different, I'd be careful to make sure to AR the *owner* (an innocent person's full perm prim can be changed to something devious by a griefer). It looks like you have 1 minute auto-return, no build, no scripts, and no object entry which is what I was going to suggest. The only other thing I can point out is that you can manually return objects that are overhanging your land but prim-centered on adjacent land. You should be able to return those five objects by that upper walkway.
  25. I figured I was doing it the hard way. Thank you! :matte-motes-smile:
