If your database and backend can't handle a semicolon in a data field, there's already something wrong. lol

The problem usually isn't that the modern database we showed to management last year can't handle the semicolons, the problem is that IT hasn't processed approval of the upgrade request we put in because they're too busy playing Overwatch over in the back room so our actual database is still stuck in 1937...

    ;)

  2. This thread seems to have WAY MORE drama than makes sense given the subject matter.

Looks like I was wrong about Firestorm. Could have sworn it was otherwise but I even opened some images up and messed around with looking at them in different ratios them to verify that I'd had it wrong.

I do wish that the ratio for all three of 'about land', 'picks', and the '1L / 2L' profile images was the same BOTH across each of them with each other AND across all viewers. It would make image choices a lot easier if there was universal consistency. I could care less what actual ratio was chosen - I just wish it was a universal standard.

Typically that is how those work I have already encountered it a number of times where i fly through a lot... get instabanned... then check and see that my ban is only for like 3 hours.  It is an exploit way of errecting banline for anyone and it should be a top tier AR

I've never seen it in the wild myself. If you do, let the moles and such know right away.

I have a 'script lag meter' thingy that I made to monitor how much script time folks were using up. And one option on the 'what to do about this' choices that I included was to do a temp ban. So I know how this could be made... but thankfully I've yet to encounter it.

I think I even disabled that feature from my copy of my meter when I found it was just causing drama.

That actually could be a scripted security system that records names within a certain range and adds people to a ban list as a way to skirt around the 15 second rule on a security orb.  That very well could be an illegal security system setup

    Interesting.

Would this be a violation or not?

I can see both sides of an issue on that.

Technically it's an instant 'orb'. But you're not tossing anyone out.

That said... it causes the very issues banlines always cause - such as vehicle fiascos when lag or something causes you to cross a boundary line. Not as common in Belli where the roads are not right up against and sometimes even partly into people's land... but it still can happen.

    ...

Actually... it's even worse than general banlines. Aircraft can fly over general banlines. But a named banline will break an aircraft even it's flying at 900m above your plot...

So yeah, this one would be bad. Nevermind seeing both sides... The impact of a script like that would be chaos.

But also very hard to catch if the script is smart about making the bans very short duration.

Lol I thought my neighbor's parcel had a similar issue, seeing ban lines every time I passed.  Then it turned out that she had banned me!

That was the first thing I checked for. But this alt has no public persona so it would have been really weird and the banline was on the other side of the region. But no, it was a general banline.

The only reason I found it was since the map isn't working, when I land in a new region I briefly turn my camera up to 'well ain't this crazy'... and look around. And Firestorm lit up one parcel as red.

The banlines are now gone, and on my alt's own parcel, I can no longer set banlines. So, somebody fixed this issue.

  6. @Abnor Mole:

Noticed banlines on a Chalet Home today. In the region Faint Echo.

So my alt then grabbed a home in that region and I discovered I can turn on general banlines there.

(I turned my banlines off right after testing this... They're still on with the home I noticed in the region, if this is a Chalet wide issue, these might start popping up. Or maybe it's just an issue with regions that were recycled into Chalets? At least the map seems to imply some of these regions used to exist in some other form before.)

Keep in mind one cannot deed the land of a linden home to a group. You can set it to your land group, for your alts of friends to use it, but those sqm do not count.

    Thanks.

Edited my post to note that. I'd implied it but not stated it, forgetting it might not be known by everyone.

This whole issue reminds me of the debates I have with a nephew over his favorite political 'ism'. He's always "the world would be better if we just put this 'ism' in place instead of the corrupt government we have. And I keep telling to read some actual history not the junk in the chat rooms... "if your ism was in place, what happens when a power hungry set of folks take it over?" "But that won't happen because the people who like my ism are pure of heart and won't abuse the system..." /faceplant.

Thus... we have rules like no deeding land to your group because, despite how wonderful it would be. We know it only takes one homie to exploit that thing to make a mess of all our toys.

A bit like the issues we're now seeing in the 'game of homes' problem... Most of us are 'pure of heart' and follow our 'ism' as intended', so we get rolled by the homies that just see a loop with a hole in it.

That was another thing that hastened my loss of interest in trying to resolve the issues I was having. I couldn't disable that video on the login screen that made loading the viewer up annoying every time I used it. Once logged in not so bad, but that video drove me nuts.

The mechanics of sharing land via deeding to a group would undermine the entire premise of Linden Homes.

It would encourage GoH/botting to claim homes that can then be squatted and traded or sold.

Right now if I get a Linden Home, my alt can use it, but has limits on what she can do. Right down to even things like using the radio or setting the About Land details. She can't even adjust the windlight. This is because you cannot deed the land to a group.

Deeded land is essentially "owned" by everyone in the group. There are ways to have total control and the only thing you can't do with deeded land is give it to a member - you have to sell it to them. It's very common on mainland to sell a plot to yourself for $0L in order to get it out of the group when you have some reason to do so (like maybe put it in another group, or sell it to a friend instead of yourself). This is the one sole thing that would still not be possible.

But all I need to do is charge people to be in and then to stay in my land group... I could probably set up a bot to take weekly payments, and if it didn't see a payment from 'Somebody Resident" that week, boot them from the group.

Now, I've just managed to become a land baron... and since I'm grabbing up a hundred Bellisseria plots a day, I've got a massive estate. And I can charge all these fools just enough to give me 10% over the costs of my 10,000 premium accounts... :)

    - doing it this way, I never have to set out rental boxes, so I can escape the notice of the Lindens and Moles and the ban on commercial activity... until somebody reports me and all 10,000 of my tenants are suddenly evicted and LLs loses all that monthly premium... so... if I get away with it just long enough, they will feel pressure not to stop me...

    - If that sounds silly... start talking to some of the land barons who hold massive chunks of Zindra and elsewhere... and are basically holding a tier bill that makes the above sound cheap. And then all the tricks they've used to offset it.

Thankfully, unlike with mainland and Horizons... LLs stopped "me" before the doors even opened on Bellisseria... so they will never face that moment when they have to decide about losing a customer that pays for half the servers like they would if they ever cleaned up mainland...

    - THIS is very likely a big part of WHY you cannot deed your Linden Home to a group.

    Hi Shnucks (lovely name),

I'd assume that the majority of SL residents uses the Firestorm (FS) viewer, and that most profile picks are viewed in that type of viewer in-world. FS uses the profile old style (version 1.x). So the answer would be 16:9.

So it really depends whom you want to cater: the default (4:3), or the majority of SL users (16:9).

How do you even get Firestorm to use 16:9.

It is and always has been 4:3 for me.

Interesting pov, however LL has never said you have to decorate a home. I see many empty homes.

I think the difference there is that a person hasn't purposefully made one spot empty, they've just not filled in the spot they have. But yeah, that is also a major 'first-world social issue' - that people get and pay for things they don't use.

But my reasoning above was just a theory, I can't speak for the rules LLs makes.

Why does anchoring prims bother you? As long as the anchoring is done in a way where no prims are on public land, what is the problem? What covenant does that break?

I had the same reaction at first so I thought about it to see if I could figure out the issue.

What I see... is that this is leaving one of the homes as empty in order to clutter up the other.

First, no one actually needs more prims - if you do you're not being efficient. But that's a skill issue not something for an AR.

The really problem would be that it causes what appear to be vacant lots. Ghost towning.

This is actually happening in RL in the cities of San Francisco, London, and Manhattan. The ultra rich will go in and buy up a whole block just so they don't have any 'peasants' around them... and that is why a few blocks away in many of these cities, there are now camps of people living in tents... The issue of course has LOT more layers than that.. but blocks of land with empty houses is not a community.

In downtrodden cities, like Detroit, the same effect has resulted by people leaving. But that's a different looking result as then the block has no one on it.

This issue is what we are now seeing in the old linden homes - and that will solve out when those zones get closed. It's also present in a lot of mainland, and that will always be an issue due to a lack of zoning rules having led to flight...

    ...

Creating intentional vacant lots, what the wealthy are doing in RL, that's not a good look for the one part of SL that is vibrant. That people have now managed to emulate this effect in SL is not something to be encouraged...

  13. I don't know WTF is going on with those feet...

But much of the lag of bodies like this can be handled by doing what Maitreya did. Remove all the onion layers - put some of them as optional wearables, and then make the base body BOM.

Ideally... don't do that. Instead hire the maker of Regalia to make a new version of your body that is only 30,000 triangles but still has all the features. As in, hire a 3D modeler that isn't stupid. Not the modelers that are making all these messed up high lag human bodies...

I suspect that if Belleza ever did an update... well if they ever did an... WTF am I thinking, they won't ever do an update... but in some pipe dream fantasy where they did... if they removed all the layers and did things the same way Maitreya did, and also removed the three copies of the chest just like Maitreya did and made them worn addons... then such a 'will never actually happen' Belleza would be the lowest lag of the bodies made for human avatars. Sadly it's a dead product line...

  14. I dunno. if I saw those two names I would have about the same reaction as if I saw the results of picking 3 random letters out of the alphabet. That's all I'm seeing, and this even after reading this thread.

I have no idea what I am reading here. I think if it was written in Ancient Sumerian it might be more clear to me... I am just... too old to be cool enough to follow some of this stuff anymore I guess.

Interesting how no Stilt OW or Stilt Piers are showing..I wonder if they are currently the most popular...?

I just saw a stilt pier before coming to this thread. But those do vanish fast.

I'm actually starting to wonder if we're not already at the demand saturation point. New homes are filling up very slowly. In demand spots go like crazy, but regular stuff just sits now.

There is something just like it at Rigmarole https://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Rigamarole/57/197/158

Yep. On the screen is text that refers to some real world news events that happened around the same time as the content in those regions was filled in. So that's what I meant by it almost giving it away. That text would have let folks who've been obsessively following the rollout of Bellisseria know that it was a recently made area. ;)

My biggest gripe over Legacy(other than the price; but I got it 50% off), is the scripts weight. It's something around double the scripts of Maitreya, so I find myself veeeery easily reaching 5MB with it. Maitreya I find it pretty easy to stay under 3. If I see people at events walking by me, and they start rubberbanding a bit, I get horrible anxiety lol

It's also higher polygon count. By an amount that basically shocked me.

This is the demo, so subtract some small amount, a few hundred or so, for some signs it rezzes around you.

The Legacy body is 246,172 "triangles" (polygons more or less).

The feet are 406,536 triangles - Holy freak that's lag.

    The hands are 193,264 triangles.

    TOTAL: 845972

    - At that range we are in uncharted "Holy Expletives Batman!" territories of lag.

The ENTIRE Belleza body is 521287 triangles. Belleza was the queen of lag before Legacy said "hold my polygons, I got this, let me kill your SL for you.").

The ENTIRE Maitreya body (includes hands and feet) is 176,297 triangles.

There is a furry body that can wear all clothes made for all 3 of thoese bodies (it's a pack of bodies, and one of them works for each of the above). The Belleza fit for that is 33,736 triangles. On a fraction of the lag, they manage the exact same animation and shape responsiveness.

  18. I really liked Black Dragon back when I was using it.

But in the end I stopped because I could never figure out why some textures right around me, like perhaps my own skin and the floor I was standing on... would never fully rez, and textures 57 regions off the to left, down 3, and up 763m... would snap into place instantly. It was just so... random... in texture rendering priority, and seemed to always favor the things furthest away in both distance and my current camera angle. Whatever the issue was, I seemed to be the only one plagued by it, so I just gave up in the end.

Keep intending to give it another try and see if an update has cleared out whatever was wrong for me with it.

I do often refer to it's complexity numbers when talking about what's really laggy in SL. Whether or not you agree with the numbers he chose @NiranV Deanis correct in how he 'sorts out what is important and what is not' So if he says X is 1 million and y is 2 million... Then I know Y is twice as 'troubled' than X... even if I would be just as happy if the numbers were 10 and 20... It's the scale and sorting that matters, and LLs complexity formula has that wrong.

If I say any more I will have given it away.

not much water to be had with this theme at all . *sighs*

The log cabins were pretty similar. The good water plots were super rare. There was one long internal river, but it doesn't connect to the outside world. I tried for it for a bit, but then decided I wouldn't be happy even if I got one of them, so moved on.

Forest with homes coming right up to the water line is a normal thing in the Pacific Northwest, for the folks lucky enough to buy land there before the wealthy moved in... So it is something I hoped to see more of in the log homes, and it looks like as they fill in the coastal regions they have added some of these.

Up to 6 homes now that I have found with access like those above or better. But of course that's still super rare.
All in as yet unreleased regions, or at least not yet occupied.
