  1. I made the same mistake when I read it at first too, Lindal. I can imagine a hypothetical case like this. The OP owes Person B L$ for something, but Person B is really ticked at the OP and has blocked him. So, the OP wants to pay the debt, but wants to be sure that Person B will actually receive it. More than that, the OP knows that Person B won't receive an IM or a notecard, but wonders if a friendly note attached to the payment -- an apology, maybe? -- will make it through. If I were just a little bit more curious, I'd mute my alt and find out.

  3. That 512 sq m. allowance is essentially a waiver for the land fee on your lowest level of tier. That means you can buy a plot of land anywhere you want to on the Mainland and apply the waiver to your land use fee. You pay for buying the land in the first place, of course, and for anything you build on it. If the land is less than or equal to 512 sq m. in area, though, that's all you pay. If you bought more land --- say , 1024 sq m --- you'd apply the waiver and end up paying only $3.00/month instead of the $8.00 you would normally pay. See https://secondlife.com/my/account/landfees.php? and http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043#Section_.3.2
  4. Start here >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Getting_Ready_to_Learn_LSL . Then work through a few of the basic tutorials at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Tutorial . It can also help to take a course in LSL scripting at someplace like Builders Brewery or Caledon University. For many people -- fast learners -- it is also smart to get hold of full perm scripts and try modifying them a little bit at a time until you get a feel for how they work. When you finally have written a script of your own and have questions about how to improve it, post it here and we'll be glad to help. ETA: You can't apply a random force to the wiggly end of a flexi prim. It wiggles only in your viewer, so we have no scripted control over it. You can move the other end randomly, however, and the wiggly end will respond. One way is to put llSetPos with a random increment into a timer. That's a typical way for making tails twitch, for example.
  5. If you have a non-technical issue related to billing concerns, you can call the Linden Lab billing team at the following toll-free numbers: US/Canada: 800-294-1067 France: 0805-101-490 Germany: 0800-664-5510 Japan: 0066-33-132-830 Portugal: 800-814-450 Spain: 800-300-560 UK: 0800-048-4646 Brazil: 0800-762-1132 Long distance ( not free, but you can use Skype to save some cost ) : 703-286-6277 **Note: Support is offered only in English
  6. Clearing your cache makes the problem worse, so don't ever do that. Cache is a local storage space on your own computer, designed to hold images that you have already downloaded, so that your graphics card doesn't have to re-download them before rendering them another time. If you clear your cache, you are forcing your computer to download all images again. That slows down rendering for you and it adds to rendering lag for everyone else in the sim as well. You should only clear your cache if it is clear that you have corrupted images, or if you have missing items from inventory. Rezzing can be agonizingly slow in clubs sometimes. Some club owners put way too many textures in their builds, and have extra scripted features -- game boards, welcome boards with pics on them -- that keep displaying new textures all the time. Then people arrive wearing loads of attachments with textures that have to be rendered. All you can do in self-defence is drop your draw distance to something incredibly low and increase it gradually. Firestorm and Phoenix have a special feature that does that automatically. See http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/progressive_draw_distance . It works.
  7. Unfortunately, there is no way to "take back" your L$. He will have to agree to give them back to you. For now, I suggest being patient. This is a holiday weekend in the U.S., and many people arrange to take an extra day so that they can relax with family for the first long weekend of the summer. Your landlord may simply be enjoying the holiday. Send him a polite note to ask what is happening, and hope for a response by Monday. There's not much that you can do beyond that. Linden Lab will not generally become involved in a dispute between residents. BTW, please remove the lkandlord's name from your post here. Naming another person involved in a dispute can be considered a violation of the Community Standards.
  8. As soon as you open the Pay window to send L$ to an av, it has a Comment field that you can write a short note in. Firestorm has had that for a while. I don't know about other viewers.
  10. If you IM with, Pay Linden dollars to, or give inventory to someone you muted, that person is automatically unblocked. Chat history informs you of what's happened. ETA: Ah! I read the question backwards. Irene is right. The answer is not clear. It's easy enough to find out, though. Block your alt and then have her send you L$10. See what happens. Even if the experiment fails miserably, the most you're out is L$10.
  11. 1. You'll need to explain what you mean by a "different shape." Other than being crunched by a deformer (which is reversed when you relog), there's not much that ever happens to a standard avatar. If you have some sort of custom avatar, you'll have to explain. 2. You'll need to ask in a new thread. NEVER add an unrelated question (or even a related one) to someone else's thread, especially one that is several months old.
  12. So an avatar who is sitting and therefore linked to an object has increased its own OBJECT_SERVER_COST (or the seat's)? It sounds like avatars become server liabilities when they are linked to objects. So we should advise people who own venues with lots of seats to remove them, or maybe not let people sit in them, especially if they are wearing mesh. Does this make sense??
  13. In order to play Flash format videos (eg YouTube videos), you must have the generic Adobe Flash plugin installed. If you use IE as your web browser and already have Flash, you will need to get the generic Flash plugin; see here. linux users need to have gstreamer installed, with the “bad” plugin set.
  14. And they each have a role within the group that allows them to rez or group land?
  15. When you get a DNS error message, it means that your viewer and SL's servers have temporarily lost the ability to talk to each other. Unless there's a problem with the servers (Always check http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ first), it's probably something on your end. So.... (1) Try shutting off your computer, unplugging the router and modem for a couple of minutes, and then plugging them back in and restarting. That simple step may clear up everything (2) Change your DNS settings from whatever your ISP assigns you as a default. Use Google's free public DNS servers instead. Here's how >>> http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ (3) If things are STILL messed up, contact your ISP. Maybe they are working on their Internet connections. Mine go down for about 20 minutes once a month or so while they are vacuuming dust out of their servers, or whatever they do. BTW, Second Life is not a game. :smileywink:
  16. It should. So long as all the various permissions ... individual, parcel, group, and rezzed object ... are the same, you should have no problem.
  17. Bake fail problems are always the result of poor communication between your own viewer and SL's servers. Changes to your avatar's appearance are made at the local level, on your own computer. The various textures that comprise your skin and clothing are "baked" into a single composite texture that must then be uploaded to the servers so that they are viewable in world and can be downloaded to other people's viewers. Files are uploaded in four steps of increasing resolution. You don't see a final, clean texture until all four steps are complete. If they are interrupted along the way, the servers get garbage. In the old days, they used to display a default avatar, Ruth, when that happened. Today, they display a fluffy cloud. It's not easy to figure out where the files get borked along the way, but the most common weak spot is right at your own computer, its router, its cables, and its modem. If a connection is weak but borderline, it may work fine one day and not the next. Or it may handle some files well but not others. The difference may depend on something as simple as whatever else the computer is doing at the time, possibly using enough bandwidth to interfere with the upload. That's one of the reasons we generally recommend that people stay away from wireless connections, which are easily compromised. Unfortunately, all we can do is guess at what's wrong in the connection. We are SL residents like you, not Lindens. We can tell you where the diagnostic tools are, and that's about it. We can also point you to any number of JIRAs, like this one >>> https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SH-744 , that report on all the various forms of bake fail. I encourage you to read through those and look for clues that might help your own situation, and to add your own observations if you think they will help Linden Lab technicians find ways to handle damaged files better.
  18. There's a well-recognized bug >>> Wrong parcel name used with 'Can't rez object .. because the owner of this land does not allow it' error message Until the Linden technicians figure out a way to fix it, the best solution is to try and rez in the exact center of your parcel and then move whatever you rez. You'll have to experiment a bit to find the center. Try rezzing a simple cube prim over and over and over until you find a place where it works. You ought to be able to rez other things there and then drag them where you want them.
  19. Peggy probably has it right. The L$ number in your viewer is often out of sync with the real balance in your account, which is on your dashboard at secondlife.com >> Account >> Transaction History. You can often jog the in-world number into updating by just clicking on the number in your viewer a couple of times to get its attention, but the best way to be sure of your balance is always to check your dashboard.
  20. I believe that you can simply uncheck the Scripted Agent box at any time, so long as you remove the avatar from computer control and do not use it as an unregistered scripted agent.
  21. For what it's worth, the RenderUnloadedAvatar business is worthless. It does exactly what it says ... it shows you the avatar, even if it's not ready to be rendered. It won't fix a thing. Anyway .... Since you have apparently tried many standard methods and they clearly are not curing the symptom, you have a deeper communication problem between your computer and SL's servers. If you find that the bake fail problem comes back repeatedly, or is not fixed at all with one of the suggestions at http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail , you have a chronically weak Internet connection. There are many steps to take for repairing it. Perhaps the simplest ones -- ones that work best for most people -- are: (1) Don't Use WIRELESS. Wireless connections are inherently less stable than direct cable connections and are more vulnerable to interference. Then, (2) Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power for a few minutes to let it clear its RAM. Then plug it back in and let it get a fresh hold on an IP address. If those simple steps do not work, I recommend a careful reading of Nalates's blog on this topic >>> http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/
  22. 1. You cannot be harmed physically in SL, so do not worry about knifepoints. 2. Especially if you have photos, chat or IM logs, file an AR immediately. Let LL decide what sanctions are appropriate. 3. Ban the individual from your parcel and, if possible, the sim. 4. Do not retaliate in any way. If you take actions that are against the TOS, you could be banned. Review http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Reporting_griefers:_very_detailed_instructions and this long but very nicelky-written disussion >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Fr43k_Paine/Dealing_With_Griefers
  24. The generic answer is that Marketplace hasn't been behaving the way it's supposed to for quite a while, so almost anything can happen. The best advice in your case is to try using a different browser. IE, in particular, has always had a hard time with SL's web sites (and vice versa), but Firefox and Chrome both usually work well. See if you get better results by switching to one of them.
