  1. My personal take on this chess thing is that we are being played. I am putting forward a theory that people are being played against each other on a massive scale. Specifically, we are seeing the old technique of "divide and rule". The purpose, from my very personal viewpoint, seems to be: to keep people perpetually unhappy, demoralised and in-fighting between themselves. It's a rather sad outlook, I know. That's why I'm making this post - in the hope that I am wrong! Some groups I can think of being relentlessly played against each other are: men against women old against young black against white immigrants against residents LGBT against CIS homeowners against renters working people against unemployed "left wing" against "right wing" (a massive group) petrol car owners against environmentalists trans chess players against all other chess players... There are many more, but these groups popped into my head first. "Divide and rule" seems to be actively pushed by channels like television, newspapers, large marketing companies, politically driven vested interests etc. --------------------------------------- In the case of chess, I would like to take a closer look at the board/management of the Chess Federation. Who, exactly, took this decision to play one group of chess players against other groups of chess players? Where exactly did such an order originate? It must have originated with a person. Someone decided this. Who was it? That's where we should look. "We the people" should not get distracted into in-fighting. Look further. --------------------------------------- I also think this specific attempt at causing division among chess players (seriously...?) needs to be seen in a larger perspective. This "divide and rule" concept is going on in every corner of society. Someone wants things this way. Next question: Qui bono? Who gains? I do not have any answer to that. The road ahead becomes too foggy around that bend.
  2. Why are there even different classes between males and females in the first place...? One could argue that chess would only need one single class, open to all genders. Problem solved.
  3. It might be "political". You mentioned this guy was a libertarian something. If your views are somewhere on the other side of the spectrum, that might trigger him somehow. I'm just guessing - don't want to speculate too much. Differing political views is obviously not an excuse for bad behaviour. --------------------------------------------------- If this was me I'd probably put up a "ground level skybox" and simply block off his parcel with some nice background image so I couldn't see his place at all. Depends on how big your parcel is. I had a 4096sqm place once where I had a ground level skybox. I think 4096 is probably the minimum for a good result. Looking "from the outside in", my skybox was transparent (neighbours could see the place fine, but my avatars were never visible to avatars on neighbouring parcels). Being "inside the skybox", I had a beautiful mountain panorama which blended in with the hedges & trees around the edges of the parcel. I never saw the neighbours and I don't think they ever saw me.
  4. I seriously don't understand why some people just cannot leave others alone. It is beyond my comprehension. I feel for you, I really do.
  5. This. As for friendships, if I did accept them I also felt the need to "be there". To do the "responsible thing", somehow. The IM's within 30 seconds from logging on ... yes, can relate. The post describes the main reason why I finally did clear out the friends list. And stopped visiting most hangouts... And frequently logged off again... In a way it's a pity because I enjoyed open chat. But, I can't give away what I do not have.
  6. I wasn't aware of the Banana Fish reference. But I have now looked it up. I like learning about new things I did not know before.
  7. As long as you clearly define under your "1st life fin" whether you carry roe or milt in the real ocean. I do apologize ...
  8. Very good question. I would also like to know.
  9. It sounds like you didn't ask to get IM'ed in the first place. But then somehow you were made to feel like a "deceiver" - in a metaverse which is heavily marketed as "roleplay". SL sure can be a paradox at times. (Apologies if I have misunderstood anything btw.) I don't interact much either nowadays... Another song popped into my head: "Is this the real life... is this just fantasy...? Caught in a landslide... no escape from reality..."
  10. "Am I a boy or a lady, I don't know which..." ("Bobby Brown" by Frank Zappa) I have one male and one female avatar on SL. My female avi (this one) looks quite nice. And I try to be polite in chat. Sometimes it feels uneasy - especially if one of these "predator" guys show up and starts sending IM's and friend requests after two minutes. But that's just SL ... it is what it is. My male avi could probably have played a part in "Alias Smith and Jones" if anyone remembers that series (Pete Duel... why oh why...?). Am I female or male for real? Take a guess if you like. I don't really care what SL people "are" in real life. It's none of my business. I take them at face value. But sometimes it's pretty obvious - huge boobs is a giveaway lol. I just feel old and grey in real life. SL makes a nice change. Nobody wants to see my saggy ole' RL body, that's for sure... sigh... I've also become more of a recluse in SL as well. Maybe SL and RL really are the same...
  11. It never rains but it pours.
  12. I've tried that. But with very limited success. I was only asking for directions... That's me on the left.
  13. I'm watching my jumping dolphins from a virtual beach. Made a little bossa nova tune and put it on the Soundcloud page: My SL looks (and sounds) like this:
  14. Thank you. No problems. I wasn't quite sure. All good.
  15. I realise that my earlier post (on page 8) was poorly phrased. My exact words were "Threads do seem to get locked." ---------------------- Correction: On page 8 in this thread, I should have written "Some threads do seem to get locked." ---------------------- It was not my intention to mean "every thread". But I could have phrased the post better. I have seen some threads get locked, including one thread where I had also posted. I was interested in seeing how that particular thread was going to develop. But since that other thread was locked, there was no further development.
  16. Well I for one only have one (1) account on these forums and have never posted here under any other name. I have one alt on SL itself but that alt is not on this forum.
  17. Threads do seem to get locked. I was about to post something in the "deserted Gor" thread ... but found it had been locked ... can't really see why, but hey, censors know better than I do. I've made a few posts the last few days but I also find myself thinking "what am I doing here?" In the real world there are now many areas where (poor) people are obviously not allowed to speak their mind. So they keep silent, because what else can they do? And they retreat to their own backyards (if they have one). In SL, we are probably retreating into personal bubbles too. Ban lines go up - in more ways than one. It is inevitable. I'll take the servant's exit when I leave...
  18. Maybe property inflation is creeping into SL as well... I've heard that in ancient times, like "pre-2008", people used to live in houses (instead of tents, caravans, cars, campsites or on the street).
  19. Yes - the "copyright" obsession has gone too far. Copyright uncertainty has ruined lots of options for cover bands in the music industry too (I know from experience). It's too much hassle for next to no reward (for the little person). Back in the day of cassettes, the big music labels used to print "Home Taping Is Killing Music" on covers. If you read up on what the Larrikin Music label did to Greg Ham (from the Australian band Men at Work) for example - you will find an absolutely horrendous example of mis-using "copyright" laws. Rest in peace Greg, it's a great song and some of us will never forget what they did to you.
  20. Create fashion model avatars and take stylish photos of them. Or, make cartoons.
  21. Thank you so much. My main one is a Roland BK9 and in addition I have a JV2080 module (second hand) to get one extra layer of sound (usually brass, strings or choirs from the JV).
  22. I'm a bit nervous about posting this, but ... if I may rather shamelessly promote my own Soundcloud page... I play keyboards and sing (croak) some old songs. All songs here are older than 70 years. It's very old school. Just like myself despite the nice looking SL avatar... A couple of instrumentals are my own - Summer Memory & Elga. The older jazz songs & lullabies have special meaning to me. I have played piano for 60 years now, and bought a lovely Roland keyboard a few years ago plus one extra "JV2080 module" and that's what you hear. I don't use any pre-recorded backing tracks. These songs were taped (I still say "taped") more or less in one single take from start to finish. You have to program the bass & drums in advance to get the right rhythm - and then play on top of that, in real time. "Smoke Rings" has a sax solo in the middle which is overdubbed - admittedly - but that's pretty much the only one. My voice is weak-ish I know. Yes, it is me singing... all flaws included. Tagline: "I try hard!"
  23. Somewhere in the 1800's, poetry was written on a mechanical typewriter in the bleak flickering light from a smoky coal fire and some candles... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- A typewriter from Liverpool Was openly camp and uncool It wrote ancient words 'bout some bees and some birds Then got cancelled and sent back to school -------------------------------------------------------------------------
