  1. Privacy through obscurity doesn't count and you know it If I cared enough (I don't) then I could quite easily make a list of my friends, and check against that daily to see who has dropped. But that's a lot of work for something that boils down to simple curiosity for me - I was just wondering if anyone had automated that process?
  2. Weird request of the day: Does anyone know of any tools/HUDs/whatever that can keep track of any changes to your friends list? More specifically, anything that can tell me who has just unfriended me if my friends count drops? I've tried looking on the MP and all I've managed to find is a bunch of online-status stalker HUDs, which is not exactly what I'm after at all. And life is too short to track this manually
  3. From my experience, the 'easy choice' is to rant and complain about how unfair these restrictions are, and how they'll just take their custom elsewhere if they aren't wanted, and how they'll tell all their friends not to shop here, and how they'll report you to "Linden Labs" for discrimination. Yes, such people are idiots. Chances are, they have no idea what the cause of their high resource usage is. They'll strip off naked, not realising that their Belleza body is the main source of their high ARCTan complexity and their XCite lady parts are the main source of their high script memory usage; and so they'll rant and rave about how the checks are either broken or unfair, and go elsewhere. People are inherently irrational, sadly.
  4. Quick Q: I have a system skin called "Only Body" in with the box of my head skin from YS&YS, only appliers in the body skin box. Is that what you've got, or do you have a full body skin? (I'll poke the creator if the latter)
  5. Just to pre-empt the inevitable question; the use of the word "gender" prior to ~1955-1960 was referring to the grammatical property, eg the masculine form of a word.
  6. I should have put more emphasis on the "have" there. Because you're right; a creator can just tick a box and re-release their product as BoM friendly... but that would fail to deliver the performance benefits of BoM. Doing the job properly is much more involved.
  7. The idea is that the body creators will release a new body version, as the changes they'd have to make don't have to be that difficult. These new body versions can be done without applier layers, which contribute to lag (as you're effectively wearing four copies of your body at all times). So the updated bodies would be less laggy, in theory... but at the cost of making all of your appliers useless, and all of your clothing's autoalpha will no longer work, and your body won't have an alpha hud anymore. Is the benefit worth the downsides? ....no comment
  8. She's referring to the word, not the concept. The word "gender" as we know it today is about 60 years old, doing the usual scientific thing of stealing a Latin and/or Greek word. Prior to that the word "sex" was used for what we now consider to be the separate concepts of "sex" and "gender". In part because of that, "sex" has become a "dirty word" to many, as there's now an "alternative for polite society". That's largely why "sex" and "gender" are used interchangeably, colloquially, by the majority of the English-speaking population.
  9. It turns out if you wait for the first folder delivery notification and then remove the HUD, you miss out on the other two folders scripted to arrive a couple of seconds later. Whoops, my mistake, sorry team.
  10. It didn't, and neither did my Hourglass Bundle redelivery. The Physique body-only installer just gave me that folder, the bundle gave me a near-identical main folder and a separate one for the asymmetry harness. (Side note: that asymmetry harness is a fantastic idea, definite plus points for that!)
  11. Minus the part that makes BoM work, yes. Edit: Scratch that, they don't include the older body at all. You either keep hold of your old copy, or your stuck with the new.
  12. Here's the kicker: there's an omega applier that grants any omega-compatible mesh body most of the features of BoM. Why would you use 'upgrade' that makes most of your appliers obsolete, when you can have the best of both worlds with the older body model and an omega applier? The only thing you're lacking is alpha layer functionality; but the HUD-driven alpha cut system you'd have to use is compatible with everything you own, rather than making a chunk of your clothing obsolete. The smart thing to do would be for creators to release an "applier-friendly" and a "low-lag" version of their bodies, one with onion layers and one without. Yes, that means you will get a large chunk of the population that will walk around with three unused applier layers, but that's going to happen anyway. And they're probably wearing mesh clothing with 1024x1024 textures for buttons, sitting on a chair with 1024x1024 textures for the nails in the chair leg, so it's not like it will actually make a noticeable difference to performance.
  13. We've updated our body, it's now less resource-heavy! We've updated our body, it's now less resource-heavy; but you'll have to throw away 80% of your appliers! It's easy to be altruistic in Situation A; Situation B less so. Also I swapped from Physique to Maitreya about a year ago for similar reasons, so let me know if there's anything I can do to help with that transition, if/when you want to make the swap.
  14. That's a false comparison. The introduction of mesh bodies was a direct replacement for system skins, tattoos, etc; the two could not co-exist. That's clearly not the case with BoM, as a baked skin layer and applier layers have worked together perfectly fine for months now on the project viewer. If parts of my inventory are fundamentally incompatible with the new tech, then that's fine, that's just the cost of staying updated. But that's demonstrably not the case here, we're expected to dump large portions of our inventory for the ideological purity of a handful of forum posters. No thanks. In terms of reduced functionality; clothing applier layers are intentionally not skin-tight. They don't get sucked into the buttcrack, they don't highlight the female genitalia, they cover the nipples. This is essential for applier-based clothing to function at all, and none of that is possible if you strip out all applier layers from a mesh body.
  15. Those layers are not useless. Even if there was some idiot-proof way to convert every applier out there into system layers (let's not even start on the legal issues with that), there are still a good number of effects that cannot be replicated with a single skin-layer. "Have fun rebuying your inventory because I've decided to reduce functionality on a whim" is a terrible approach, and not something praiseworthy at all.
  16. That's what I'm hoping for. There's no justifiable reason why I shouldn't be able to wear a baked layer on my skin, and then an applied layer above that if needed. You can already do this with the omega layer; but at the cost of the 'new' alpha layers not working. I know there's already been some pushback against Slink for arbitrarily stripping applier functionality from their BoM update. I suspect the others are using that as a test, gauging the reaction before they release their own update.
  17. I highly doubt it's going to make a difference. Even with BoM, users are still going to want to keep their existing applier functionality. Partly because some clothing layer effects cannot be replicated with system layers, but mostly because people have built up large collections of appliers. There's no real reason why the body creator has to remove those applier layers when they make their body BoM friendly... so they won't. No creator that wants to stay in business is going to voluntarily reduce the functionality of their product because some mad people on the forums say it might save a few fps, it's just not going to happen.
  18. A number of makeup/tattoo/skin effects creators have been packaging system tattoo layers alongside appliers for a good few months now, in preparation for BoM. It's nowhere near ubiquitous, of course; but at least there's something of a market in place already. Even if visibility has been kept low so far.
  19. The baked layer will replace any skin applier that has been applied to your body, painted onto the body itself; so unfortunately a system skin is non-negotiable if you wish to use BoM functionality (there's no reason why you can't keep using traditional appliers). You also can't mix appliers and system layers in the 'wrong' order, eg wearing a system t-shirt and an applied tattoo will cause the tattoo to appear over the top of your t-shirt.
  20. "Second Life is not about the visual, but about the connections we form with those we meet." - man with basic low-effort system avatar, whose library of compliments runs out after "nice ass".
  21. I used to hit the "Show Friends Only" button when shopping, with all the problems that come with that. These days I have a graphics preset for shopping/busy venues that only shows 5 non-imposter avatars, along with turning off advanced lighting and a few other performance tweaks. It does a better job than simply derendering people, and avoids any issues related to that. When taking a photo I'll temporarily derender all sorts; walls, decor, people, lights, anything. But that's for one specific purpose, to curate my surroundings for a single photo, and the derendering is undone automatically when I relog. Aside from that... I don't really derender anything. Nor do I block people, if possible. Hiding something from my view does not make it disappear; and creating false empty spaces around me is not something I consider a benefit long term. It would take a lot for me to give up the ability to see and hear what goes on around me.
  22. I'd see that as a blessing. A bunch of men with skin made of tissue paper have removed you from their lives... sounds like a good thing to me!
  23. Just to rattle off a few from memory; Blueberry, Addams, Neve, Tetra, Tres Blah. Those are my standard go-to creators for 'normal' clothing. Some of their stuff is more risque than others, and much of their everyday clothing could do with an inch more material in some places, but it's still perfectly fine. I'm not even going to attempt to colour match (as I mostly buy single colours), but here's a few examples of stuff that comes close (ish) to your photos: Tres Blah - Casual Tee + Blueberry Jimena Shorts. A 'normal' t-shirt is surprisingly hard to find, most seem to expose some midriff; but Blueberry alone have ~15 styles of shorts, so you'll be able to find something you like. Blueberry - Cece Trench Coat + Tetra - Skinny Capris. The coat does come with a toggleable top and dress, but they both show off some cleavage. To get a more realistic cold-weather look I used a sweater applier from Sweet Tea ("Turtleneck Basics"). Blueberry - Frank Jeans + Blueberry - Aria Button Up Top. Blueberry jeans are the best I've found so far, and they have a boatload of styles to choose from; and they also come with two butt types depending on how tightly you want them to hug your curves. I don't really have a shirt that matches the photo, but I included this one to demonstrate the downside to these particular designers. Some of their stuff you'd be happy to wear out in the street in real life, others... less so. One of these designers has a pair of shorts that exposes more ass cheek than it covers; but the next display over is a gorgeous, flowing maxi skirt. But I hope you can still find what you're looking for at these places
  24. Those guys tend not to care about success rate, nor are they particularly picky; so they'll rattle off a quick line/tp to anyone that appears to have the right number of arms, legs and breasts, expecting the vast majority to be shot down or ignored, but are happy because they'll get their one success. Which sucks for the 99% of us that have to endure this nonsense.
