As a premium member of SL, you are entitled to a tier that lets you occupy up to 512 sq m of land without paying any land fees.  If you decide to use that tier to have a Linden Home, then your 512 sq m parcel is in a specified area that has a Linden Home on it, of a style that you have chosen. If you decide not to have a Linden Home, you still have the tier, but you may apply it to any other land you own, up to 512 sq m, without paying land fees. You do have to buy the land, which is a one-time cost, but you get to choose where it is and what sort of home you put on it, if any.  The biggest difference is that any objects that you place on that parcel count against its 117 prim allowance.  A Linden Home does not count against the prim allowance on its parcel.

If you want to exercise that second option, then stand in your Linden Home, open About Land, and click the button that says Abandon Land.  (Be sure that you pick up all of your belongings, one at a time, first.)  You don't need to buy new land right away, because you will always have the tier when you need it.  If you think the price is right, you may buy any plot of land that you like.  See >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043 for how to do it. Again, your tier does not apply to the price you pay for the land itself.  It applies to the fees that you pay LL for maintaining it -- like paying taxes or a monthly association fee.

There is mainland available just about everywhere! :)   And yes, your premium account allows for a 512spm free land tier, so you can own a 512 land parcel without having to pay a monthly tier (just your premium account fees).  A couple things to remember.  First, you have to find and buy the land.  Second, it has to be Linden mainland in order for the free tier to apply.  So don't buy from a private estate if you want to use your free tier. And third, unlike a Linden Home, any house or structure you put on the parcel goes against your prim allotment which is 117 prim for 512sqm.  Linden Homes are unique in the fact that the house is built in such a way that its prims do not count against your available prims.

Hello Rage and welcome to SL Forums. Yes it is possible. As a Premium Member you have the right to own a 512sq m2 parcel on Mailand without additional cost. The Land Forum here in SL Forums is a good place to start your search. Another way is to use SL Search Choose Land & Rentals, use the suitable word keys (for example "Mainland 512" and you will get a lot of results. You can teleport also somewhere on Mainland and use the World Map selecting the "Land for sale" checkbox. Nearby land for sale is highlighted on the map. Check out also this link: Purchasing Abandoned Land. Good luck.

The other answers are exactly right but i'm going to let you know a little trick to having a tiny bit more land than 512 at the same cost to you. The Lindens provide a 10% bonus in allowed land holdings for group owned land. What that means is, if you donate your 512m of allowed tier to a group, that group can actually own up to 563m2 of land before the members of the group need to give more tier. So, if you and a friend got together and made a group, say "foxtrot & friends", and you donated  your 512 to that group, then you purchased land on behalf of that group, you could have 560m instead of 512. I believe there is a 560 in Whately that is for sale too (no it's not mine, it's abandoned).

To add to the other excellent replies...

What we have been talking about here is Mainland.  Owning Mainland requires a Premium membership, and you pay tier direct to LL, in $USD, every month (except in the case of a Linden Home, or the first 512 m2 you purchase elsewhere on the Mainland).

There are two other land options.

One is "owning" (renting, really) a parcel of land on a Private Estate.  This is actually more common...private estates make up about 80% of the land in Second Life.  You don't need a Premium membership.  You pay the estate owner, usually in $L.  Be sure to read the Covenant before buying/renting any private estate land.  Make sure the owner will permit you to do what it is you want to do with the land.  IM the estate owner or manager if you have any doubts or questions.

The other option is renting Mainland.  Many residents will rent out a portion of their land to others.  Again, you don't need a Premium membership to rent in this fashion.

To find land for sale or rent, use your Map, with the Land Sale box checked.  Yellow parcels are for sale.  Teleport to ones that look promising and check them out.  You can also use the Land and Rentals tab of the Search window.  You can filter the Search for parcel size, price, rentals/sales, and mainland/estate land.
