If I were you, I would take baby steps first.  Learn your basic building skills and practice them by making a few simple things.  The Ivory Tower of Prims still has the best set of tutorial guides on building, so it's worth an afternoon or more to go there and do those tutorials.  It's easy to find the place if you use Search ( https://search.secondlife.com ).  Then, consider taking a few free classes at a place like Builder's Brewery or NCI.  Again, use your Search and type in "building classes" to see what's being offered across SL.

You'll be able to practice building in a sandbox, but you'll need your own land to put your house on, so you might as well buy or rent a parcel that meets your needs and build there.  See >> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043

Finally, the most important part of building a house is texturing. Without good textures on all parts of your house, it will look like a stak of plywood blocks (which it is  :smileytongue: ).  You will be able to find freebie textures in many places, and some of them are quite good.  You will probably want to visit merchants in world or in Marketplace to find textures that are exactly right for YOUR house, though.  Again, Search is your friend.  You'll be able to find loads of good texture merchants, and classes in how to apply textures effectively.

It all sounds rather daunting, but many other people have done it before you, so you can too.  Just ... baby steps.....

Hello Mystiqa and welcome to SL Forums. This is a ....big history hehe. At first you need to learn the basics about how you build. Please check out the following link: http://www.uncp.edu/home/acurtis/NewMedia/SecondLife/HowToBuildInSecondLife.html

About a mentor / teacher it would be better to post under Wanted   Category in SL Forums.

Where to build it:

You can build things in public sandboxes...areas intended for anyone to come and build things.  It can not be LEFT there...if you don't save your work and take it back into your inventory, the land's auto-return will dump it into your Lost and Found folder within a few hours.

If you want a permanent place for your house, you have to buy or rent land.  This is a complex topic.  I teach a class on it at Caledon Oxbridge University on Fridays, at 5 pm SL time.

Besides the links provided there are free building classes listed in Events/education and you can find YouTube videos as well.  When looking at classes it does not make any difference what the class teaches...you build a house with the same skills as you would build a table or a magic wand.  You will want classes and info on texturing, prim, sculpt and maybe even the new mesh.

If you want doors that open, security systems, lighting you will need to learn scripting or buy scripts.

Once you are ready to build you will need land to put your house on.  If you are a premium member you can get a 512 plot tier free (you still need to buy the land). Or you can rent land from a private estate owner. You can look in Search Land Sales to get an idea of pricing

One thing to keep in mind as learning to build is prim count...the more prims your build uses the larger the land size you will need.  Land pricing is based on foot print size and prim allowance.
