First, you might try another Viewer Built.

Seems that in this Devbuilt the Startup crash issue has been fixed. :)

And second, Win8 is a Developer Preview, not even a Beta, so problems should be the norm rather than an exception :)

The 3.1 version of the viewer has OpenGL issues. The Shinning version recommended is the project viewer for fixing OpenGL issues. You can try it or the Snowstorm developement viewer. Both have OpenGL fixes. See Alternate Viewers and scroll down to get the development viewer.

There are likely to be differences between the Shinning Project and the Developement viewer. Shinning is probably not going to have all the fixes in the Dev Viewer, but the Dev Viewer is unlikely to have all the OpenGL fixes in Shinning. Both are less tested than the SL Beta viewer and likely to have surprising problems. BUT, from your perspective they will at least work.

I read someplace in the forums, I don't recall where, someone had a similar issue with their Windows 8 beta machine and SL and the problem was the video card manufacturer's drivers didn't work properly with Windows 8. The solution was that Microsoft made available their own generic video card drivers that once installed allowed SL to run on a Windows 8 machine. Good luck and keep an eye on performance and temps.
