I recommend joining an in world builders group for beginning builders. Happy Hippo or Builders Brewery comes to mind. I think both groups have classes, tutorials & free building materials for group members. Torley Linden also has some very good videos for the basics on YouTube. I'll add some links for a beginning building videos below.

I also suggest taking apart free items to see how they're made.  Touch an item & go into the Edit menu. Then you can see how many prims it's made out of, what textures are on each surface, & what sort of scripts are inside it, among other things.

When doing an internet search on Second Life building, it's a good idea to limit your search to the past year, because older videos may apply to older viewers with a different User Interface (UI) than what you're using.

There are hundreds of classes in creating all sorts of things from dozens of groups and in several formats.  You can also try asking people.  The big thing is, don't try to run before you can walk.  Learn how SL works and how to build ANYTHING and you are half-way to building EVERYTHING.

Go to Kuula sim, NCI's main site.  They are a helper organisation who offer classes throughout the week.

Clothes are usually a mixture of two things.

System layers - your shirt, pants, underpants layer etc.. These clothes are created by drawing them in programs like Photoshop or GIMP.

Prim and sculpty (and now mesh) attachments.

These are the parts of your clothing that are little yellow boxes in the outfit folder. These are made of either a collection of prims, sculpties, mesh objects, or a combination of them. They are harder to make I think, but you can buy ready made templates for nearly everything and just put them together if you want to start somewhere simple and play.

Google for Eloh Eliot skins. They are wonderful, free and a great way to start playing with textures.

GIMP is a free download for manipulating graphics and there are loads of tutorials on youtube. Just search secondlife clothing and go from there

It seems daunting to begin with but making clothes, even if only for yourself, is really good fun.

I should know, I'm crap at it but I carry on anyway :D

There are many, many classes and tutorials.

OR

Search at Google for this:  Second life tutorial clothing

You will come up with hundreds of pages.

For creating the clothing, I use the free graphics editing program, the GIMP from www.gimp.org

To make a really really simple (as simple as it gets) prim skirt/cape:

Rez a cylinder. hollow it out to 95%.  Taper it to get the shape you want.

If you want a cape, path-cut it until it looks like one.

Go to "Features" and turn on "Flexible".   Play with all the flexi parameters to see what they do.*

Drop a texture on it and/or color it.

voila!

*You can also use the primcontrol HUD to do this.  It is free and open-source.  It has the advantage that it does not freeze the selected prim(s) as edit mode does, so you can actually see what each param does as you change it.

Has been many good posts here with lots of good advice.  NCI and Builders Brewery has many classes, all are free to attend. However, Don't Forget to TIP your instructor--most spend countless hours creating classes, compiling FREE materials for their students, and teaching. I an sure none of them get rich off teaching these classes, but do it out of wanting to share with others what they know. Show your appreciation, tip well.

Mermaid Diaries is one of my personal favorites since she delves into many many different types of creations in SL. It may be old but will provide you with lots of information http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2006/11/build.html I am saddened it is no longer kept up to date.

Goggling "SL Clothing Tutorials" comes up with tons of urls to research...just have to spend some time following the links to find what you are looking for.  Not to mention there are countless tutorials on building, mesh/sculpty making, gimp/photoshop on Youtube.com

Above all else, prepare yourself for a vast and complex learning experience....learning one thing often sending you off searching in another direction. I have been in SL a long time and learn something new everyday.

Good Luck, but most of all, enjoy your SL.
