First, if it makes any difference, I am using Maya 2010.

I created a clothing mesh, got it skinned and weighted, and got it uploaded into Second Life.  However, when I go to "wear" my clothing, it attaches to my right hand as any default object would.  From what I understand the clothing should be exactly where I had placed it on te body in maya if it was rigged correctly.

Is there any easy way to tell me what I've done wrong?  Or did I just completely screw it up?
I thought this was going to be a lot easier to do, but I've now been screwing with this for days, stuck on not even being able to get the mesh to upload after clicking the weighting option in SL, but now it uploads and isn't being worn correctly.  I'm just about ready to give up!  Please help!!!!

Thank you!

Rigged mesh clothes can be worn at any place. Hand, chest, pelvis, stomach, ear.. where ever. The nice thing is that regardless where it is attached on avatar in SL, it will snap exactly where you put it in your 3D program. Because rigged mesh clothes are rigged to the avatar bones it "knows" where it should be. So it overrides the SL attachment point. You can wear rigged boot on your nose, and yet the shoe stays in the foot. The default location is right hand where rigged mesh will attach in SL. (Note: this applies only to rigged items. Non rigged items behave like prims and sculpties do.)

Of course in SL it is reasonable to attach it to some other point, else the hand is soon full of things... :matte-motes-agape: And there is a limitation how many things can be worn on one attach point. In SL just use "Attach to..." and select suitable location when wearing the rigged item. As said, where ever you attach rigged mesh it does not move anywhere, the rigging takes care that it stays in correct place. From then on it will always attach there. Some designers forget to do this and then the customers reach the limit how many items can be worn in one place (in this case the hand) and are mystified what is going on.

Thanks for both of your answers.  I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I did smooth bind and weighting again and reuploaded and this time it worked.  However, when I wear the item, it's positioned too far back on my avatar.  I am not sure why...I thought I had it over a good place on the skeleton, but I guess I'll have to do some tweaking yet.

Seems that is one thing there is a lot of when you first start out, tweaking.  As soon as I get this positioned right, I'm saving the avatar mesh with the skeleton in the correct placement so I don't have to keep wasting money on upload fees.

Ah, brings me back to the days of learning to sculpt LOL.

When I export rigged mesh to collada file, I select only the rigged item (a skirt for example), and not the skeleton. I use Blender, I select the skirt, and then I click "Export only selected". It works great every time. There is no need to upload the skeleton if you have used the default avatar skeleton for rigging.

Sae, are you aware that your skeleton's bones (in Maya) need to be correctly named ?

Did you check to include skinning in the Maya-exporter ? (I'm using 3dsMax, but since Maya is also from Autodesk, maybe it's similar that you have to manually enable Animation/Skin in the exporter.)

When Uploading in SL, did you activate the "Skin Weights" (Not only in the preview-window, also in the modifiers) ?

I finally broke down and got a mesh avatar (Maitreya Lara) and i LOVE it!

One problem is that I am an idiot. I wear the clothes and then take them off and find myself the invisible woman.

I used a folder system for stripping with all my outfits but I cannot seem to make it work with mesh and applicators.

Can someone tell me how I shoudl set up these things so they it works seamlessly with escorts?

Kind of embarrassing to go invisible in the middle of an activity.

Thanks!
