I always suggest exploring what you like first, then find places that meet those options. When you get there, you'll find people who should be like minded. 

I really use destinations in SL.com to explore and look at new places.  Granted, I'm often looking for photo opportunities, but there are people there too.  

I think the best and closet friends are people who have the same interests that I do.
