What's the deal with Land purchase for educators?

Hello

Last year I purchased a developed Horizons Community Center from Linden Labs and have been using it for classes I teach at our college. I had originally explored some college sites to include Evergreen Island 3 http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/NOVA Community College/128/128/14 and Northern Virginia Community College http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/NOVA Community College/128/128/14. Evergreen Island 3 seemed abandoned and is now gone. I understand that you could buy land from the Second Life Auction (https://places.secondlife.com/auctions/#0) with Linden Dollars? Abandoned land can be purchased from Linden via a ticket I think. How do you find abandoned land? Can you search for abandoned college sites?

as far i know the educational program for land is only valid for full regions, by official RL educational institutes. Not on a parcel level.

You can find abandoned land by traveling on mainland, if you check "show landowners" the color of lands change, and if you click the about land it will tell who the owner is.
You can request LL for a part of total abandoned parcel by ticket. Or simply buy on auction or from resident sales.

I'm not sure if what you had last year was a "turn-key" or pre-developed region, or if the two other college regions you mentioned were "turn-key" or pre-developed regions. 

Generally, when a region is no longer being rented (or tier being paid for it) if it was a private region, it is removed from the grid (and most likely whatever build was on it is removed).  Private regions don't generally show up as "abandoned land.  Abandoned land generally is a mainland area or region which if left unpaid, can't be simply removed from the grid like a private estate, so it instead goes in the 'Abandoned land" state (and also generally has what ever build was on it removed at that time).  So I'm not sure if you will find abadoned college sites, as such. 

I think your best bet is to look at the announcement linked to above by Madori Linden, and either submit a support ticket to the Land team as she suggested (or try the contact info in the article).   Tell them what you're looking for and they should be able to provide the best information about what is available and the best way for you to acquire what you're looking for.

Thanks I will give that a try. Can an island be abandoned?

 LL will take private (educational) regions offline if those aren't sold under the same requirements as educational purpose , regions work different as parcels.
You need to contact LL to start the process of getting one.( with all your rl credentials about your educational status)

No. If the owner of a private region stops paying for it, LL removes it from the grid. If you've visited some college sites that LOOK abandoned or unused, you can contact the listed owner and ask if they're interested in selling it to you. If they are, there is a process to transfer ownership. See:
