I'm new to SL and I'm finding editing my avatar and changing outfits/clothes a bit tricky. Does anyone have any tips and tricks for when it comes down to customising your avatar? Recommendations for free clothes and other items would be greatly appreciated too!

Also - I found some free clothes in one of the new-user friendly 'spaces' (is that what you call them?) and I was trying on a crop top and wanted to wear some pants with it however it would only let me wear either the crop or the pants? Am I doing something wrong or is there a certain thing I need to do to wear both at the same time? I obviously don't want to walk around naked so I''ve been sticking to dresses haha!

Welcome to Second Life, Berri!

When it comes to wearing clothing (particularly mesh) "Add" is your friend. When you "Wear" something, it displaces anything already attached to the point where the new item is going to go. Although the SL avatar has quite a few attachment points, mesh clothing, which is "rigged" to conform to the avatar's shape, more or less ignores where it's attached. This has resulted in creators sometimes using the same attachment point for disparate clothing items, like pants and shirts. If you select "Add", the selected item will NOT display anything already on the attachment point.

There are times you DO want to displace something you're wearing, so "Wear" is still useful. In your particular instance, try "Wear"ing the pants and "Add"ing the crop top.

Getting dressed has never been as complicated as it is now. It's also never been as visually pleasing. I'm sure others will chime in with recommendations for free wardrobe items.

When you finally put together a look you like, show us your work in one of the vanity threads!

Making an avatar takes patience and work.  It is not a very easy thing.

Just shaping alone takes work.

One trick that I might suggest if you are using FIRESTORM viewer is look for the little icon on the bottom row of your screen that looks like a shirt.  Click on that shirt icon and that is how you can SAVE your outfits.

To save an outfit, put all items you want to wear on your avatar including the huds for all the clothing/hair/jewelry/etc.  Next, click on the shirt icon on the bottom row until the OUTFIT GALLERY OPENS.  NEXT, click on SAVE AS and a little window will pop up where you write the title of the outfit you want to save such as Pink Dress, Blue Hair...or whatever name you'd like in the title box area and then click OK and your outfit will be saved.  More below>>>

This is your OUTFIT GALLERY.  To access your outfit gallery, click on the shirt icon again and look for the outfit you would like to WEAR and then click on that outfit name (the square) to highlight it and then the word WEAR will now light up and you click on the word WEAR.  When you choose WEAR the system will automatically redress your avatar in split seconds into any saved outfit in your OUTFIT GALLERY without you having to dig in your inventory at all and your are fully dressed in a matter of seconds.  You can do this as many times as you want with as many outfits as you want with your avatar being dressed in matters of seconds.

You can then change colors of the outfit if it came with huds because the huds will attach also when you hit WEAR.

See my photo below.  I am a Dinkie in SL...a cat with human characteristics - we wears clothes in SL.  Then see the OUTFIT GALLERY to the right of my avatar.

THE FREE DOVE has some free mesh items to play around with but you MAY NOT be naked there or she will throw you out...hahaha.  Be sure to take the items you pick out to a place you can change.  You may want to rent a cheap place to start so you can try on you clothes, open boxes and try on demos.

Welcome to SECOND LIFE!   p.s.  Sorry I was in the middle of making pillows and have not furnished my new house due to the coronavirus situation and my finances.  So my house is a mess!
