Weird grief or just a bug?

Question

So we had a guy griefing our sim multiple times per day for near a week, and as soon as he stops people start randomly having their inventories fail where they can't add or remove anything, and they're invisible when they log in. Animations don't work in the sim and you can't change outfits. Getting 'your account is temporarily unavailable until...' when I try to log in while this goes on.  Is it just coincidental timing, or is this some sort of griefing?

It may not be coincidental, but it's not griefing.  Your region is acting up, and possibly all the chaos caused by your griefer contributed to this.  If you are on the Mainland, file a support case and ask to have the region re-started.  (If you are Premium, you can use Live Chat for a quicker response.)  If you are on a private estate region, contact your estate owner or a manager and ask for a re-start.

The message "Your account is temporarily unavailable until..." is generally not an issue.  It takes time after you log off or crash for Second Life to log you out, and if you try to log in again too quickly, you'll get this message.  One other reason for this message is a short suspension issued by Linden Lab; if your griefer filed an Abuse Report against you, and LL thinks you've broken one of the Terms of Service, this may be the case...but probably not.  They would have sent you an email informing you of the suspension.

Just confirmed the griefer paid us a visit. Apparently it's been the same guy dedicating all his free time to ravaging all the furry sims in the same way. All day, every day. He's gone through nearly 6 alt accounts. What do, LL? What do?

Hi there Teller96!

If you're experiencing issues with someone griefing or harassing you or others on a region, please file an Abuse Report.

When completing the report, please provide as much detail as you can and include a screen shot if possible. If an account name is not available, please file the report as using the account name of "Governor Linden" and include an explanation in the details.

For more information on Abuse Reports, please read our Guide to Filing an Abuse Report in the Second Life Knowledge Base.
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Filing-an-abuse-report/ta-p/700065

If you have already filed an in-world Abuse Report, we thank you. For privacy reasons, we're not able to update you as to the result of the report once it's been actioned, but you will receive an email confirmation that the report has been received by our Governance team.

Ye, I already have filed a report, with extra details about what happens to the sim with the grief, in hopes that it's an exploit that can be patched out.

If the region is yours, you may want to consider setting an age limit or Payment Info restriction. Or suggest it to the region owner.

Besides Nalates's suggestions, you might also want to consider the following, at least while you're still having the griefing problem.  You probably don't want to leave these restrictions in place permanently:

  • Restrict access to group members only
  • Restrict object creation to group members only (this one, you should leave in place permanently)
  • Restrict object entry to group only
  • Turn off scripts
  • Limit teleports to a designated landing point only
  • Turn off flying

The last two are only there to hinder the griefer's movements.  If he can't fly about and can't flit about by teleporting, he's easier to find and catch.

And, of course, explicitly ban the actual griefer, and any alts he may create to try to get around bans.

Incidentally, for whoever might see this thread, this is why new users often get booted from certain places, and the age requirement on many sims is a direct result of griefers using new accounts to circumvent bans. It's not discrimination, it's for the sake of the people who inhabit/frequent the sim.

My home was messed with ONE time. Proper land security settings make all the difference; when they got tired of not being able to come in and act up, they got bored and gave up. That was over a year ago, and nothing since.

And as for people hating on furries and trashing their sims, I have never understood it at all. If you don't like furries, don't visit furry sims. Just like if you hate kids, don't go hang out on playgrounds (and stay the hell off my island). It's like someone who doesn't like bathing spending all their time in the bathroom, screaming at the shower stall and wondering why it can't just go away. You got a whole house, try a different room.

My best advice has already been given in another thread, and by someone else; whenever griefers attack, get everyone possible to file reports. If there's multiple reports and they're clear and to the point, they will not be ignored.

I had to report someone for admitting they were 9 years old once. The person who told me what was happening also reported the user, and we made sure we both had the user say it to us in IMs. We were still in the middle of containing the situation and keeping the user occupied when they poofed. And not a word of it ever hit local chat.

Just because LL doesn't follow up reports with a note saying they handled the situation doesn't mean they never do anything about reports. They're just trying to be discreet about it.
