You may buy a lot of any size that you can afford, anywhere in SL.  It may be on the mainland or in a private estate.  The only sense in which it might make a difference that you are a Premium member is that Premium members may use their Premium land fee waiver to cover the monthly fees for the first 512 sq m of land that they own --- IF it is on the mainland.  Your land fee waiver is worthless in private estates.

So, look for land advertized in the Land forums, or in Classified ads, or simply wander around SL looking at the plots marked for sale on your map view.  When you find something you like, contact the owner and buy it.  Often, there will be a box of some kind on the parcel where you can pay directly, but there is always Instant Message too.  Once you pay the purchase price, Linden Lab will know automatically to start billing you for the monthly land fees.

There are more details to the process.  You can read them here >>> https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043

Rolig and Alwin's answers are quite correct, but compressed...so I'm hoping they haven't confused you.

As a Premium member, you can buy any Mainland that's for sale.  Find Mainland for sale by using...

  • The main Map, with the Land Sale box in the map legend checked
  • Search, using the Land and Rentals category, and set the search filter for Mainland/For Sale
  • The SL Marketplace in the Real Estate category
  • The SL website forums
  • The land auctions at this link: http://usd.auctions.secondlife.com/

You don't pay tier on the first 512 sq m. of Mainland you own.  If you own more than that, you'll pay a monthly tier fee according to the table here: https://secondlife.com/my/account/landfees.php?lang=en-US  So, if you owned, for example, 1024 sq m, you would pay a monthly fee on 1024-512 = 512, or $5 USD/month.  To buy Mainland for sale, just right click the land, select About Land, then click the Buy Land button in the window.

Whether you are Premium or not, you can RENT land on the Mainland from another resident, or you can "buy" (it's really renting, which is why I have it in quotation marks) a parcel on a Private Estate.  This does not affect the tier you pay to LL.  Instead, you pay the landlord or the estate owner a weekly or monthly fee.

When looking at a parcel of land for sale, check:

  • The borders.  Make sure you know the size and shape of the parcel.  Use World/Show More/Property Lines to see them.  You can use the Advanced menu (put it on your top menu bar with CTRL+ALT+D) and Rendering Types to turn off the rendering of water or objects to clearly see all the parcel borders.
  • The Maturity level of the region the land is in.  Don't buy General, if what you need is Moderate or Adult land.  You cannot change the maturity rating.
  • The prims available.  See the Objects tab of About Land and check "parcel land capacity."
  • The neighbors.  Do the builds look nice?  Are there a lot of lag-causing things in the region, like high resolution textures or a breedables farm?  Look at performance with CTRL+SHIFT+1.   Fly up and check the sky too, a lot of skyboxes can't be seen from the ground.
  • If it's an Estate, read the Covenant.  Make sure you understand and agree with any restrictions.

I teach a class on the basics of virtual land at Caledon Oxbridge University, on Fridays at 5 pm SL time.  It's free to attend, so maybe I'll see you there!
