You can get the older official Linden Lab viewer 1.23 here:

https://secure-web40.secondlife.com/my/support/downloads/

At the bottom of the page you'll find the download for viewer 1.23.

Third party viewers are on this list, there are others available but the Linden Lab Third Party Viewer list is generally accepted as a "safe" list.  Thats not to say that all viewers not on the list aren't safe to use.  Many of these viewers are based on 1.23 with additional features, some are based on viewer 2.

http://viewerdirectory.secondlife.com/

As far as saving your inventory to your hard drive if you made it you can legally save it with some third party viewers, saving items you did not create can in many cases be a violation of the Linden Lab Terms of Service.   To organize your inventory easier I suggest you open a second inventory window (Crtl+Shift+I) and drag folders or items from one window to the other.  This method works in any viewer you may choose to use.

Several viewers allow you to reposition the inventory window...even in 2.1, you can open a second instance of it.  That makes it a lot easier to drag things from one place to another in your inventory.

Thank you Jennifur & Lindal !!!

I will try opening a second window for the inventory so I can drag and drop ... that sounds like it will help a LOT!!!!

I'm also curious about the various viewers, so I will try those as well...  when I get home from work.

You guys are the best!!!  Thanks for helping me!!!

Really? You can download with Stored Inventory

It's on the list.

I get that everything in my inventory is stored on some server .. maybe @ Linden Labs.  I certainly do not want to violate the terms of service, or steal anyone’s creations.  I respect how much time and effort it takes to make the items in SL,  and hope to make some of my own someday.

That being said… here’s the thing.  Stuff is disappearing from my inventory.  I will admit in some cases it may well be my fault,  because I’m new at this – maybe I accidentally deleted something.  But .. I’ve been very careful not to delete things I paid actual money for.  And if I pay real money to buy these clothes, then why can’t I put them in my own closet (in this case some form of back up).  If they are safe on the server,  what makes them stolen if I was able to back them up somehow – just in case they poof on me.   That’s what I was trying to fix --- not to mention, it would be a heck of a lot easier to organize.

I still can’t seem to get two windows to open, but I’ll keep trying!

I found V2 much easier to use once I installed the Starlight skin: http://www.4shared.com/file/S14A_IBR/starlight_for_Viewer_2-1.html

There are a number of Debug settings you can use, as well. Debug settings are found on the Advanced Menu, Ctrl-Alt-D to enable. Here's the thread for the settings: http://blogs.secondlife.com/message/346707

In the end, which viewer you use is your choice, but if you decide to try theThird Party Viewers, go through the TPV directory: http://viewerdirectory.secondlife.com/

Btw, Second Inventory charges 30 Euros (US$60?) to obtain it. It is not free like the others are. (I wonder if that violates the open source licensing) And you cannot adequately interact with your environment (its non-graphical).

Message was edited by: Ravin Draconia to add that you can only backup/export to your harddrive only those items that you created, textures and scripts included.

Wow, I was not aware of that feature. Thanks Susy. I will check it out too.
