Yes you do.

You may lease land from an Estate Owner or from Linden Lab directly if you are a premium member.

EDITED:

While Stef is technically correct, finding Shared Skybox leasing space also means you are sharing prims and worse yet, security and land settings with many others. You will also not be able to have your own land Media and/or Radio settings as well.

The classic Skybox parcel is a 1024 sqm parcel with a 234 prim allowance. Leasing one of these gives you the space defined by the parcel perimeter all the way up to 4096 meters into the air. On Mainland and Private Estates these lease for very little. Be sure to make sure that your landlord is available before jumping into a lease.

No disrespect to KarenMichelle Lane answer but you do not need to rent land just the section of the sky. The only reason I say this is to remove the possibility that some may think one has to rent the ground in order to use a sky box when in fact you can rent a section 1000 m up and someone else can rent the ground.

Hello, MaxineSophia

In theory, you can set up your skybox anywhere that has "build" switched on, be it on the ground or in the sky.

However, if you do not own the land, unless you are paying to rent the space in the sky from the landowner, if you did set up your skybox without permission of the landowner, it would make you a squatter, and the landowner would not be very pleased.

You can, though, play house by setting up your skybox in a sandbox. Just know that there is usually auto-return set in these sandboxes, and your skybox will return to you, along with anything else you rezz.

I have to disagree with steph Arnott.

You can NOT "rent the sky".  When you rent or purchase a parcel of LAND, you own it, and all the sky above it.

There is one possible situation in which Mr Arnott is partially correct...if someone other than you has purchased land, and is willing to rent space above it to you...and possibly to other tenants as well.  In this case, the landlord might rent space, and prims, to other residents either above or below you.  Note that in a case like this, any tenants who share a parcel of LAND ( the land underneath where the skyboxes are placed) will also share the same media and music streams.  This a potential disadvantage with this type of "resident stacking".

Also bear in mind that in this situation, as in any rental, you are dependent on a third party, your landlord.  If they are unresponsive to your needs, if you have a dispute with them, or if they go out of business, you may find yourself suddenly looking for a new location.
