  1. Yaaay no more side bar woo hooooo! One down two to go, now just they just need to get rid of the big dark shadow hanging over us referred to as a browser and remove all those little message buttons with images to reduce unnecessary server requests and we're getting some place.

  2. Hey Jo, you have just described a welcome island with, -click this sign -walk to this spot, we have those already.

    Yes a new person only needs the basics and they have to use them to walk but that doesn't mean all the other stuff can not still be there, it just has to be organized, easy to see and use. New people do ask people to help them out at times but when no one is around they usually learn much more by clicking things to see what was happens. They can not do that if the other stuff is not in their viewer. Most people are in SL for over a month before they find the environmental settings and the building tools but those being there unknown to them does not impede them in any way however the basic viewer does impede new people in too many ways.

  3. Hi Ralph, the users interface problem is only a temporary if people stick with it to learn how to use it but they are not. One has to learn so many things while trying to explore SL at the same time to see what can be done in SL before they even hear of monthly land fees. Many new users are taking advantage of the free Linden homes which indirectly delays the time it would take them to even consider getting their own land and learning about tier fees.

    The two questions I see the most in the form and inworld from new people are about 'what do I do' or 'how do I play' and how 'do I get a house' or 'how do I set up my new house, lock the doors' etc.

    If they stay long enough to get passed that point then I totally agree when they learn about tier prices they are shocked and go and try to make their freebie house work for them again.

    They only hear about TPVs if again they stay in SL long enough to learn that there are options and they only learn this by questioning why is their SL experience not functional or recently not login-able and then ask what can they do to improve it. Again this takes time that many wont bother spending.

    You are definitely correct though, if land fees where lower many more would stay much much longer since they could afford it but only after they can justify ANY price by having an environment they understood and wanted to stay in.

  4. I though it was open source code for the viewer but I don't think it is for their servers, you would have to get your own servers.

    Try this out https://bitbucket.org/lindenlab/viewer-release

    I have resisted going to Opensim for over a year now but I have been doing a lot of work there recently and it's is not that far behind and I don't think they are trying to catch up either. They seem be working on different things, they now have very little lag and a high draw distance does not add any lag at all. Needless to say I have it set as high as it will go and I can see everything from sims away. I barely ever see a sim being rezzed there, it's just there. The sim border crossings are almost totally unnoticeable as well.

  5. The user interface is a major problem, it now creates it's own lag where it didn't before and it is much more difficult to teach new users how to do almost anything. When teaching new users I can now see their attention spam diminishing right before my... where did you go? I was still typing the long pathway to show you how to do something I wasn't ignoring you. It will be very interesting to see the new viewer when it comes out, I hope they get it right because it really does make all the difference in(the)world. Inworld is demanding enough with the textures and scripts so the viewer has to be as light as possible not only because it is logical but also because it can be done.

    I am not sure that SL demands all that much of a computer since so many people can play a great variety of other video games, (not just flash games like face "sell your information" book) but actual games where you are in a 3D world playing online with others on a grid. The lag in other online grid games is now almost non existent other than the very rare freeze or crash over the course of hundreds of hours of game play.

  6. I don't see the value of this, if you have many thing in your inventory there's no way you are going to remember every icon which you would have to do as icons on folders are so small they are more of a symbol rather then an actual photo. The render cost would be small but it would also be new constant. However if you would like a picture to remember what's what which is a great idea why not just put on the outfit and take a photo and put it in that folder so you can really see what it is.

  7. Shared Media is improperly named, it was name to describe inworld internet or a web browser on a prim. What you are talking about is Media as in video hence the confusion and reason shared media is improperly named. As far as I know I always hear people say we need Quicktime so if you were to create your owner viewer yes you could set it up differently but it would only work for you with that viewer. You could however use shared media, (inworld internet on a prim) and put the web page with the video in it on a prim and then adjust the repeats so only the video appears on the prim, I've done that with flash games before. Bear in mind I might not have the slightest clue what I am talking about since i have no idea about the source code or why it would matter hahhaha, that's SL job.

  8. Yes there is such a thing, you should be able to find it in your Inventory > Library > Scripts > amin SMOOTH

    But if for some reason it is not there here you go...

    // anim SMOOTH Script
    // By Doug Linden (I think)
    //

    // If you are interested in scripting, check out
    // the Script Help under the help menu.

    // The double slash means these lines are comments
    // and ignored by the computer.

    // All scripts have a default state, this will be
    // the first code executed.
    default
    {
        // state_entry() is an event handler, it executes
        // whenever a state is entered.
        state_entry()
        {
            // llSetTextureAnim() is a function that animates a texture on a face.
            llSetTextureAnim(ANIM_ON | SMOOTH | LOOP, ALL_SIDES,1,1,1.0, 1,0.25);
                                // animate the script to scroll across all the faces.
        }

    }

    The image has to be made a certain way depending on how you want it to scroll so test it with any texture or photo on a prim first so you can see how it works. Also to change the direction just use the image rotation in the texture tab of the editor :D

  9. People usually add a menu so when something is clicked many other options come up in the menu to do many other functions. Also there are all kinds of cars and such that use a great variety of keys, walking keys to move and steer, page up/down for gears, arrows for turbo but one has to sit on it to use all of those controls. I really don't remember ever using shift or alt to use on an object though other than in the building tools of course.

  10. I have been using viewer 2 for a few weeks now only because of the larger prims we can use in building and it is great for that but the lag WOW. No matter what I click I can say, "come on" and then it does whatever the click action was, this even includes typing in any text field for each letter. H "come on" e "come on" l "come on" l "come on" o "come on" enter "come on" = Hello

    However to use SL for anything else other than building such as hosting events or making small things like cars I use viewer 1.23 and it is so amazing how there is no lag at all in any way. SL knows this as well since they are now recommending to people having troubles to use older viewers. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions

    I feel so sorry for new users as they can not know how smoother and faster SL can be since they are using viewer 2.

    As for "their mistakes" it is true SL is adding as many new things as they can so it will be much more difficult for their competition to catch up and surpass them however this addition of new content comes with a great flaw. The flaw is not properly fixing errors but using work arounds before releasing new versions of viewers. This adds up to a lot of older bugs that still need to be fixed piling on top of new bugs.

    There is good news though, (maybe) in one of the latest posts from a CEO he mentioned a new interface was coming soon. This could be the cure-all if they do it properly and start from the beginning and make everything work and then add each feature one by one so it works before adding the next feature. It could be quite scary though since SL does not currently have a reputation for working in that way, sorry but they just don't. As long as they remember the SL viewer is a program which it only has to respond to easily accessible commands then they could wind up with an actual world as opposed to only a product.

  11. Go to you sim, stand where you want people to enter and open the map and click "Copy SLurl" this will give you a SL URL you can then paste on your website. When it is clicked it will open a map of SL with your sim in the middle and a "Teleport Now" button on it so people can click that and visit your sim. If some one does not have SL it will take them to the SL web site, (I think). If they do have SL on their comp it will open SL and they will go to your sim.

    You can put the SLurl link in an image if your like as I did with the two buttons at the top of my site here http://www.trp360.com

  12. With the SL beginner avatars you can not remove the undies as they are a part of the skin. You would have to get a new skin altogether, some freebie ones are fairly good these days, use the inworld search under places key word freebies.

  13. That is a script for a gift giver but you do have to click the prim for it to give you the gift.

    Hmmm I think you mean the prim does not rez but it is always there it just becomes invisible when some one comes close to it. I know this can be done but I am not sure how exactly. Maybe something like this http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlSetLinkAlpha but you would have to change touch command to detect avatar in the script. Maybe try asking in the scripting part of the forum for a scripter to help.

  14. Rolig, that's why I mentioned the free homes I have seen being so numerous in a sim, (with many of these sims side by side by side). Plus those sims do not have very much traffic so it would be extremely rare to see someone looking for a needle in a hay stack just to drop a few prims when they still have a whole world to explore.

    However I am also going by the idea that they do have full control of the About Land tools as others have suggested. If they do have those tools they can look through them to set the land for anyone to rez and they will find they can also return prims others leave very easily, they can set the auto return, they can not allow the public, they can set up the access list. In this way they can learn more about the About Land tools by us leading them to them. Plus I was also trying to save them the 100L$ fee for a group that they most likely do not have since they are new and have no payment on file which would be another step they would have to set up first.

    I'm just stating the options since SL is so great at giving us so many options to so many things in different ways.

  15. Can't you just go to About Land by clicking the (i) near the name of it at top of screen, then go into the Option tab and set it to allow everyone to rez?

    The free homes sims I have seen have many many homes so someone finding one that allows rez and leaving prims all over the place would be rare I would think.

    So there would be no need to go through creating a group for 100L$ and setting land to group and adding people to group and allowing their active title to rez which could be tough for a new person to do.

  16. It might be easier to make a sign that says "Click for a Free Gift from (sim name goes here)". Plain text and in a good location so they can not help but to see it. One small script, less lags, like this...

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    default

    {
        touch_start(integer param)
        {
            llGiveInventory(llDetectedKey(0), "thing name goes here");
        }

    }

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    And put the object in the contents of the sign prim with that script too ok.

    If you make it to rez items people might play around with it and rez a whole bunch.

    If it follows people they might get irritated.

    If it sends out messages people might see it as spammy.
