  1. I like the idea of the cars but you would think they could have put some imagination into them. Some are even the old poorly textured freebie slum buses, extremely unimpressive. Perhaps the creator just can't build so he/she has to use old freebie junk and they are too new to Sl to know it makes their scripting work look cheap.

As for adding a bit of life to a lifeless world I think it is a great idea that real builders should be implimenting, SL needs L.

I have a couple subways that go into different sims but they are on islands not main land. The tough part is everytime there is a sim restart one or both will go off world and into my lost and found and I have to replace them with new ones. I don't know why or how the mainland ones could be piling up and getting stuck on borders, they should go off world. If they are stuck in a sim and they are physical we can push them and set them free with our own car sometimes but not always. But yeah when sending these things out the creator or owner must monitor them.

  2. If you can get free space get it and get started.

Do NOT plan on getting a store and making it all in one day, it will take time. It may take seeing your first attempt at your store to know what direction to go to make it better, find a theme and expand. Like most things on the internet they never get to a point of being finished, they always change and grow with the times but you have to have a starting point to grow from.

    :D

  3. Scripts are limitless. The question is how many scripts in the usual 100 meter area an avatar views SL in would cause lags, (unless one has their draw distance on a different setting). It depends on the scripts and what they are doing but I remember rezzing all the 20 or so free video game machines around me and getting lag just from their sounds and blinking animations.

  4. I would have to say the time we had 8 racers, (the limit) in the 360 Global Racing track. Not because I made it but because we had so many people zipping around it didn't matter how good of a driver you were, we were all crashing into each other all the time. Some times driving right over or under each other to make each other fall off the wall or ceiling... it was hilarious. Occasionally I try to call people for races to do it again but most are too busy working to have fun.

It's is here with free cars if you would like to try it out secondlife://Sialimonus/130/128/381

The secret is to follow the lines on the walls all the way up to hit the red marker at the top and hit others on the way so they fall if you can without falling yourself too. The more the funner! ( even though funner is not a word it is still true :)

  5. I don't know what this glide move is but you could use an animation, (pose) and walk to get the same effect. It sounds like you saw someone going from one sim to another and they were gliding but that's not really them it's a ghost until they are loaded and they appear in the next sim near the border.

The arrows and keys w,a,s,d do the same thing but w,a,s,d is easier for the left hand while the right hand is on the mouse.

I use the keys w,a,s,d to walk forwards, backward, turn left & right plus f to start or stop flying. When flying you can use e to fly up and c to fly down, (good to use when building since your other hand is on the mouse editing something) OR use page up for up and page down for down in flight. Press m to go into mouselook. When flying in mouselook hold w down and use your mouse to direct where you want to go left, right, up or down... but to fly up over the clouds you have to use e to fly up, for some reason looking up with mouselook will not work over the clouds.

  6. Ok here is one opinion, I am sure many more will follow.

I have been on for about four years now and I keep going back to V1.23, for me it's just easier to use. V1.23 has many one or two click actions as opposed to all the multi-clicking in V2 for each and every action. However V2 has had 8 or so fixes to it to bring it back a least part way to being more user friendly. The big deal with V2 is it has two things in it that 1.23 does not support, inworld internet, (a click-able web page on a prim) and soon it will have mesh objects, (sculpties with greater detail and farther viewing distances). I as well as many others would use those but since so few people can see them there's little point; this is a shame since I feel a lot of great work by SL has gone unseen since it is hiding in the heavy V2 mess.

However the Phoenix viewer named Firestorm looks very good, one must still do a lot of customization on it to make it easy to use but it can be done.

Best bet, trial and error. See what works for you.

  7. The shape and AO should be in the same folder as the parts for the avatar you are wearing since they have to work together. Not all animal AOs even if it is the same type of animal will be aligned with others since they have different creators.

I see this a lot these days with the pre-made SL avs new people use, someone will change from one to another but the shape and AO will not change. Usually they are floating half people since their arms and legs are in the chest somewhere... only their toes stick out of their belly buttons lol.

Oh but some animals are made to stand and walk as people do, maybe you are using one of those ones?

  8. Unlink the and delete the door, (only the door prim) make the hinge the door by making it a square and cut it so the middle is on one side, if it rotates the wrong way cut the door so it is opening the right way, re-texture hinge with a door texture.

  9. float startAlpha = 0.1; . . . the numbers start from 0.01 and go up to 1, to make it lower use 0.01 or 0.3 or 0.75 or anything like that.

I forgot to add you may want to end alpha = 0, (with zero) in cases where you are making smoke. This way it fades away at the end and disappears nicely instead of just stopping suddenly.

  10. It is not dead by any means. My thoughts are that the marketplace has removed a massive amount of traffic from inworld shopping. I remember when I used to like going shopping because you would almost always meet someone new since so many people where out and about in the stores and malls. This doesn't seem like it's going to change anytime soon unless it comes from the users. Marketplace web site shopping brings SL a lot of commission: 2% plus 5% plus 240L$ a day for enhanced plus $0.30 per transaction on the buyer's side so to them it is a monetary plus. However for serious minded users doing business in SL things are a lot calmer inworld and it is easier to work with fewer interruptions. One just has to look for the public places in SL which can be tough since so many are private homes but there are still a lot of public places to hang out with nice and fun people.

  11. You all make really good points here and I would like to go to V2 so as a builder I can see what new users see but...

One person mentioned that more people seem to be using Phoenix than V2.

The latest version of V2 has a lot of complaints about being not able to download or login.

There also seems to be troubles with V2 if one uses a mac and I do.

So all in all I am at a complete loss as to what to do... try V2 no no... try Phoenix or um stay with 1.23 for now? Yeah.

How could things get so messed up like this? It's just a program, I mean I understand adding complication to say a Photoshop program so they can charge more for it in it's next release but the viewers are free so why not just make it user friendly so no one would even think about using any thing other than the SL viewer?

  12. If you understood what Peggy said then yay there you go.

But for next time if you want to change the texture on one prim you don't have to unlink it to do so. You can edit the entire thing and then select 'edit linked parts' and click on the one prim you want to change the texture on and change it but if you only want to change the texture on one side of one prim then select 'select texture' or 'select face' and click on the one side of the one prim and change it's texture, close editor, done.

  13. Perhaps they changed V2 since but the three times I also tried it, (three different fixed versions at the time) we had to...

Hover over a symbol of two lines beside the speaker and wait for a menu to open > click More > click the music button > click ON.... OK now it's not four clicks but it's still four moves. It's actually easier to click than hover and wait for a menu to open but yeah I'll count it as one.

You can only use one click in V2 if you first go into preferences and select music on and media off, if you do not and you one click the speaker both media and music come on.

In 1.23 you either one click the music button or one click the media button to turn either on or off individually.

But please remember they have fixed V2 about 8 times now so yes it might be easier now that it was in the versions last summer, fall and winter.

But that is only ONE of the many many controls that has a longer path, when adding them all up it has nothing to do with comfort it's all about what is practical, logical and efficient.

For myself when I am not building I am building meaning I always have the editor open and I am usually using the IM window very often so right there I am at my limit of being able to see what I am building. Opening the side bar means I have to stop building completely because I simply have no view in the viewer.
