  1. Thank you for your help. I did do the clear cache many times to no avail however as of now the texture flashing has stopped, they are all correct textures now and all correct transparencies too, this morning no but now yes, yaaay!

The only odd thing now is the ground textures are still wrong. It seemed to occur after the last set of sim restarts, (I think). My sim is all rocks but it should be grass fading to sand down on the beach and my neighbor the Linden ocean sim is all green green grass on the beach and under the water too in Theornaby, the whole sim but the other new Linden ocean Sims past it are sand as they were before, (maybe the other new ocean Sims didn't get restarted at Kingpost, Funnel and Scar since they are new?). Oh I almost forgot, the map is still all white too.

But also I really want to use the SL viewer because I want to see things as new people see them so I know what I built is consistent with them and I think they always have to get the newest SL viewer when they start up.

  3. Oh no, highlight transparent is not on, (I can turn it on and off though) that ball is just picking up another texture from the sim. If I zoom my camera closer the red disappears and is replaced with another texture, rotate camera and another texture goes on it and all other prims with some transparent or shine.

  4. For the face shadows I have heard many people use a face light, an invisible prim with the light ON in the features tab, then you wear it on your nose so the face is less shadowy.

The most common thing I have seen is people using photography in stores. People take pictures and set them up in a little store as a gallery and sell them. Some try to advertise that they do custom profile pictures but I have no idea how well that works. But if you start with a little store and the photography does not go well you can change the items in the store and sell something else any time you want to.

  5. Hello, is there some way of fixing these graphic distortions or do I have to wait for the next viewer release and hope that does it? I am on a mac, I have cleared cache, changing graphics and environmental settings etc. The problems are: 1.) No sky. 2.) All land textures in all sims are different. 3.) Transparent objects can be seen and any object with shine, glow or transparencies change textures rapidly to any other texture in the sim or on someone's av, (flickering). 4.) Some textures are brighter than they should be for no reason.

  6. The sim may have restarted and you were not really there even though you were there editing. I built a whole bar, logged out, logged in and the bar was in the 1/2 way stage of the building I did to it so I had to do it again. That was along time ago though, it has never happened since. It does happen very often in opensim though, like every third or fourth login.

  7. When SL was first created it hit it's limit of the initial dream early on, then it tried to improve things a bit here and there. It's initial dream was to create a great product and it did just that. The idea of it being an actual "world" has never been the focus. The term "world" is used in the same context as Carpet World, it is a presentation not an actual place although it could be. It is a place or places to it's many of it's users but not to SL, SL has no offices for any of it's departments in SL. Their guidelines are presented in business terms such as the "terms of service".

With greater understanding of what SL could be the company really should take the lead and rely less on their user base to present SL to the real world. In the areas of business and education SL could do a lot to make the virtual world a viable alternative to the real world ways of doing things. While many have tried they usually do not fair very well since they have to do it all on their own. Many that have been in SL for years are still having troubles climbing to steep learning curve hill SL poses while trying to operate a business or classes at the same time.

Social networking is for fun and advertising, it is usually done within a few brief logins lasting several seconds per login. It is easy to see how this periodic spatter of text can become boring rather quickly. With that, web sites will come and go as they have been doing for well over a decade now. SL offers so much more than a way to text OGMs back and forth. As you stated it can actually be a first life to some people and businesses and this could be true in the future for real non prim based businesses and educational institutions if it were much more intuitive. The undoing of many long path links to do a single action are a major step in the right direction but they still have plenty more to address.

At this point it will either continue to grow or someone else will come along with a vision and surpass all that they have done. Either way virtual reality will flourish as it can provide so much more with a massive savings of time and costs.

  8. Hi, we are only logged out if we are inactive for a certain amount of time. Simply go to your preferences and change the time you can remain logged in to SL yet inactive, you can set it from 5 to 10 minutes or even to Never if you want. If you set it to Never you may have troubles with people that start talking to your avatar and get upset that you are not responding, if they are new they may think you are rude not realizing it is just because you are away from your comp at the time. When coming back to your computer remember to check the chat history to see if someone did stop by and spoke to you while you were away, if so you can send them a message telling them you are back. Of course if there is a restart you will still be logged out but that's not a daily occurrence.

  9. If by best traffic you mean the most people then yes those sims do get perks. First they get ranked higher in the inworld search since it is based on traffic, highest to lowest. Second they now get listed on the opening screen of the SL viewer as "what's hot" with the numbers of how many people are at each of the various sims. However these are only perks if people want to go to busy places, many people avoid busy places because they know the lag will be unbearable. Other than that no there are no rewards of L$ nor discounts in monthly or yearly fees nor prim type gifts.

  10. A vegetarian may comment on any other for food source as they are all living things being kill for consumption or eaten alive.

I do not believe all doctors and scientists that do not have cancer should immediately stop working on a way to cure it. Nor should engineers that have never or will never go into outer space should stop designing machines to take others into space.

People create based on observation not use, once design and implementation is made feedback can be a useful tool but it is not the only source of advancement nor should it be held over all others.

  11. No and they should not do so either, once they do all educational institution would expect the same and rightly so. Since there are hundreds of them out there the cost would be exponential. They have not made deals with them before they provided reduced rates in the past, I believe this is not the case any longer.

  12. If you got to Settings > Privacy, you can set some of the options you have mentioned you would like added.

I understand the knee jerk reaction for people to say the feed is facebook based but now that it is out, it seems better since it does not have all of the nonsense that facebook does, (remember facebook only has facebook so they have no choice but to continuously cram tons of junk in it to try to keep it interesting). The feed is simple and easy to use. If you want to add friends to a list create a group and add them there, your groups are already in a list in the Groups tab. You can set your feed so only your friends can see it so if you do not want someone to see it remove them from your friends list. To reply via email, if you get an email notification click the link in it to open your feed and reply. I am guessing on most of this because I do not use the feed however it seems to me the feed is meant to work with the rest of the SL system.

I am sure if I used it more I could find improvements that could be made but the more complicated anything becomes the more complaints, fixes and time is spent on it by all. I would rather LL spent time improving the inworld experience over other things.

  13. If the land is on one of the continents you can not change the textures at all, no one can. If your land is at one of the cut off heights of a texture you could lower it to show sand and raise it to show grass, (or grass to rock) but it doesn't sound like it is.

If it is an island then only the owner can do it for the entire sim as Relog said.

I think only the owner can pay for the land meaning the founder of the group aka the original owner not others added to the group as owners, (I'm not sure though).

  14. I had one two weeks ago but if I had more than one or more start happening it is ok by me. They are doing it to improve things, they would not do work they think they don't have to. Don't worry it will be better. Better? Stronger, faster.

  15. If you IM someone that is on your mute list you will get a warning telling you if you send the message they will be off your mute list or click cancel to keep them on your mute list and you will not be able to IM them.

In the old profiles of V1 the Mute button greys out as after you mute them so you know they are muted, I do not remember noticing if this happens in the new profiles though.

  16. If a thread is in the wrong place I think SL should move it to the right place however if it gets out of hand requiring more staff to move things around then they do have the option of deleting whatever they like to save time and cost. It is their web site.

I think Answers and discussions each serve a different purpose, they are both better at what they do. Answers re-tell the told to those that don't know, discussion can be used to change the future, why shut either one down? If a discussion springs up in the answers any of the contributors can easily move it themselves by creating a new post in else where.
